Subscription clubs for clothing, meals and razors have changed the way people shop. Now Nike is wading into the subscription market for the first time.Nike announced Monday that it is debuting Nike Adventure Club, a sneaker subscription for kids ages two through 10. Nike will offer parents three options for their kids: four pairs of sneakers a year for a month, six pairs for a month or 12 pairs for a month. Parents and kids will be able to choose from a selection of around 100 sneakers."This is probably one of the best examples of a major brand taking the attributes of a [direct-to-consumer] digital brand" and linking it to its broader strategy, said Bryan Gildenberg, chief knowledge officer at Kantar Consulting.Nike is targeting time-strapped parents in the suburbs and rural areas who don't live near a shoe store with the program. The company says that dragging young kids to a store every few months to try on sneakers that they will quickly outgrow can frustrate parents. Shopping for kids' shoes online also brings sizing issues and return hassles, the company says."We've discovered a huge pain point for parents around shopping for kids' shoes," Dave Cobban, general manager of Nike Adventure Club, told CNN Business. "This was a great opportunity to experiment with different solutions."Nike started piloting a sneaker club for kids two years ago. It grew to 10,000 members, and Cobban said Nike believes it's ready to unveil the service more broadly.Nike Adventure Club is a key initiative for the company. Forty staffers are working on the concept. The service gives Nike a way to draw parents who are outside of its traditional big-city customer base and build a connection with young kids. Other online styling services and subscription companies such as Stitch Fix, Kidbox and Rockets of Awesome are also fighting to win parents and children in the billion US children's clothing and footwear market.Perhaps more importantly for Nike, its kids' sneaker club allows the company to test out the subscription market and potentially apply it to its adult shoppers.Cobban noted that avid runners need to replace their shoes frequently and he mentioned the possibility of a marathon membership program."We're starting to think about what other athletes have problems that could be very easily solved by a subscription," he said. "This is the beginning of something pretty exciting for Nike." 2437

Since the spread of COVID-19 came to the United States, the Red Cross has seen over 6,000 canceled blood drives -- amounting to around 200,000 fewer blood donations from schools, offices, churches, and other establishments. Those cancellations could cause a blood shortage at hospitals nationwide.“It helps everybody in the population. I’ve personally had people that needed a blood transfusion,” Amanda Smith said, sitting outside her local blood donation center in the waiting room.Smith heeded the call to donate blood, despite the COVID-19 pandemic affecting countries across the world.“It’s incumbent on us to ensure that we can supply hospitals before that individual patient need come up,” Liz Lambert with Vitalant, a blood donation collection nonprofit, said. Vitalant supplies hospitals across the U.S., and because of the virus, they’ve seen a drop in donors.“We’ve seen a lot of schools and businesses that are starting to work remotely or cancel classes, therefore we’ve had a lot of blood drives that have canceled in the coming days and weeks as well,” she added. The need for blood donations continue amid the spread of COVID-19.“Even in a time of crisis, someone will still need a blood transfusion whether it’s somebody who’s been in a car accident, an accidental injury, a broken bone, anything,” Smith said.To ease fears among donors about contracting the coronavirus, blood donation agencies are using social distancing practices at their sites.“Social distancing is happening here at blood drives in what we call time and space. We are asking that people who are coming out to our blood drives to schedule an appointment. This helps us break up the timing of our donors,” Jessica Merrill, the Director for Biomed Communications with American Red Cross, said.“That represents about 80 percent of our blood donations,” Merrill said. “So that has a severe impact on our ability to collect blood and make it available for patients in need.”The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on March 19 that the organization still encourages donating blood -- with recommendations that donor chairs be placed six feet apart and cleaned often, and appointments be made to manage flow.“Blood donation facilities are staying open similar to your grocery store and your pharmacy and other places that we are depending on to keep life going right now,” Merrill said.“We are encouraging people to come and donate if they are healthy and if they meet all the eligibility requirements,” Lambert said.As people hunker down to prevent the spread of COVID-19, donation centers are looking to keep the donations coming in, to properly supply hospitals to meet their needs.“Normally we encourage walk-ins but in this situation we’re really stressing appointments to make sure that we can make sure there’s a spot for someone and they’re not having to wait,” Lambert said.“We need them to keep that urgency for weeks to come and continue to come out throughout this pandemic,” Merrill said.According to the Red Cross, to give blood, donors must be in good health and feeling well, be at least age 16, and weigh at least 110 pounds, depending on height. Those who donate will be asked to produce an ID, and be asked several medical questions. The whole process takes 10-15 minutes, the Red Cross said.“It doesn’t really hurt at all and it doesn’t take that much time,” Pam Lacey said as she made her way out after donating.Vitalant donation locations/schedule an appointment: 3497

Summer is in full swing, and with the warmer months comes the mosquitoes. Not only are the small insects pesky, they are considered the deadliest animal in the world, believe it or not. More than 700 million people around the globe get sick from mosquito bites, and more than 700,000 people die from those bites each year."We always see West Nile Virus peaks right after the Fourth of July weekend, because people have been outside and not protecting themselves," says Kylee Grenis, an expert on mosquitoes. Grenis helped us conduct an experiment to find out which bug repellent works the best.We purchased three mosquito traps. We sprayed one trap with DEET. The other with a top rated non-DEET spray called Skin So Soft by Avon. The third trap was a controlled trap with no spray. The traps were hung next to dry ice in a mosquito-infested park."We are going to hang some dry ice near those traps to simulate a human standing and breathing and hopefully that will help attract more mosquitoes to our traps," explains Grenis on the use of dry ice. After an hour, the trap sprayed with DEET had one mosquito. In the Avon-sprayed trap, there were no mosquitos. In the control trap, there were six mosquitos. The sprays kept the mosquitos away.As far as sprays go, Grenis says she still prefers DEET. "It is great at making you invisible to mosquitoes,” she says. “That blocks the receptors so that they can't detect your carbon dioxide signature." But, many consumers fear products with DEET are not safe. "I think a lot of the time people get it confused with DDT,” she explains of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), a chemical compound banned in many countries due to the danger it poses to wildlife and the environment.DEET is safe to use and just like the Avon spray, and both sprays are effective in keeping mosquitos away during the summer time months. 1872
