Student loan and eviction protections, as well as unemployment benefits, are among the host of pandemic related government programs set to end by the end of the year unless Congress acts. The issue is that members of Congress are not scheduled to be in Washington for several weeks between now and the end of the year. Breaks are scheduled over the Thanksgiving holiday as well as over Christmas and New Year's. The leaves just 15 business days to accomplish anything, otherwise these bills will likely go up come January WHAT'S EXPIRING Since March, 40 million Americans have enjoyed suspended student loan payments. That is scheduled to end come January 1st. While President-elect Joe Biden is considering an executive order to continue the program, he doesn't take office until January 20 and bills could be due before then. Additionally, unemployment benefits for independent contractors and the self-employeed, like Uber drivers or gig workers, are set to expire as well. Congress for months has also allowed those recently laid off to enjoy 13 bonus weeks of unemployment, but that program expires December 31 as well. Many states have eviction moratoriums but the CDC order banning evictions ends December 31st. Congress could pass legislation to extend it. Tens of millions could face evictions because of rent issues. WHERE THINGS STANDDemocrats and Republicans remain far apart on passing any legislation between now and January 1. COVID related legislation isn't the only concern either. Funding for the government runs out on December 11 and a bill must be passed to keep the government open before then. Tesla has picked the Austin, Texas, area as the site for its largest auto assembly plant employing at least 5,000 workers.Governor Greg Abbott made the announcement on Wednesday. "Tesla is one of the most exciting and innovative companies in the world, and we are proud to welcome its team to the State of Texas," said Governor Abbott. "Texas has the best workforce in the nation and we’ve built an economic environment that allows companies like Tesla to innovate and succeed. Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas will keep the Texas economy the strongest in the nation and will create thousands of jobs for hard-working Texans. I look forward to the tremendous benefits that Tesla's investment will bring to Central Texas and to the entire state."The move will generate over billion in capital investment.The company will build on a 2,100-acre tract in Travis County and will get more than million in tax breaks from the county and a local school district. The new factory will build Tesla's upcoming Cybertruck pickup. It also will be a second U.S. factory for the Model Y small SUV. The region that's home to the University of Texas at Austin and tech companies such as Dell Inc., was a candidate all along. But Tulsa, Oklahoma, showed up on the shortlist in mid-May. Steve Wynn is now free to sell his stake in the massive casino business he founded.Wynn Resorts said in a filing on Thursday that Wynn, its former chief executive, and his ex-wife Elaine Wynn, have dissolved an agreement that prevented them from selling their shares.Wynn stepped down as CEO last month after allegations of sexual misconduct piled pressure on the billionaire casino mogul and sent the company's stock tumbling.The company, which operates casinos in Las Vegas and Macau, said in its filing that Steve Wynn may now "seek to sell all or a portion" of the roughly 12 million shares that he owns. Elaine Wynn owns another 10 million shares, giving them a combined 21% stake.Wynn, 76, has denied the accusations of misconduct, which gained widespread attention in late January after an investigative report by The Wall Street Journal detailed numerous allegations against him, citing dozens of sources.Shares in the company were trading above 0 in January, but dropped sharply after the allegations were made public. They have since recovered some lost ground to trade at 6.Wynn Resorts said in a separate filing in February that Wynn would not be allowed to sell more than a third of his stake in any one quarter. The Big Red Machine has been elected to political office.Glenn Jacobs -- better known as WWE wrestler Kane -- won his bid for Knox County, Tennessee mayor after roundly defeating his opponent, Linda Haney. He had the Democratic nominee on the ropes in Thursday's election, tallying twice as many votes -- 51,804 to Haney's 26,224.It was a much easier victory than his primary win over fellow Republican Brad Anders, who took the wrestling superstar to the mat -- Jacobs only won that race by a 23 vote margin.In his wrestling persona Jacobs, most often a "heel" or villain, is a fan favorite. He has previously wrestled in a red mask, giving rise to his nickname.He was already winding down his wrestling career before he ran for office, according to Bleacher Report.His new responsibility, Knox County, is home to the city of Knoxville and is the third-most populous county in Tennessee. 896
