As a child, it's part of the wonder and magic of Santa.Even as we grow up, many people keep the tradition alive, simply because a Christmas stocking touches the child in all of us.And it's from that attachment, that an act of kindness was born.As a teenager, Jane Wesley Brooks began filling Christmas stockings for the homeless, and delivering them to those on the streets each Christmas Eve.Over 40 years, she has passed out thousands of stockings filled with caps, mittens, socks, shampoos, magazines, and even playing cards. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New data from WalletHub shows how California ranks on a list of best and worst states for military retirees.Overall, California ranked high when it comes to quality of life and health care, but much lower when it comes to the economy and homelessness.WalletHub ranked states on a number of other factors, with one being best and 25 being average.In the quality of life category, California comes in at 10th on the list of 51 states and the District of Columbia.From there, the data starts looking less attractive. When it comes to the economic environment, California ranked low coming in at 48th.California also ranked 48th for veterans per capita, yet ranked 49th for the percentage of homeless veterans.The area where California ranked best was number of VA health facilities per number of veterans where the state took the 3rd spot.The data also found that red states are more friendly towards military retirees than blue states. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Monday, community leaders demanded reforms following the release of body camera video showing San Diego police officers shooting a robbery suspect over the weekend.Monday, SDPD said he was in the ICU with life-threatening injuries.“I'm asking for SDPD to put an aggressive plan together to ensure that [with] any officer-involved shooting that within 48 hours to 72 hours a video from the body worn camera footage is released,” said Rev. Shane Harris with the People’s Alliance for Justice.Body camera video released on Sunday by SDPD shows the moment leading up to Saturday's shooting. Police said they were patrolling Downtown when they saw Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra in a red jumpsuit and recognized he was wanted for a robbery.From a street camera, Ibarra is seen reaching in his waistband and raising his arms toward officers. Under Ibarra, body camera footage shows what police said was a gun wrapped in a bandana.“They went in guns blazing and this is not the training that they have,” said community activist Tasha Williamson on Monday. She added that the police should have called for back-up before the confrontation.“People are saying he pointed the gun at the officer and we're simply saying how is that because the officer on video show him running sideways behind the suspect to a cover which was the vehicle,” she said.“They used verbal commands. They followed what their training is and they did an exceptional job,” said former SWAT commander and lethal force instructor Ray Shay when he spoke to ABC10 News on Sunday.“It's unfortunate the gentleman was shot but you'll see that the police officer- after shooting the suspect and getting him handcuffed- immediately calls for an ambulance and here are these two young officers doing CPR to try to save the life of the man who just tried to kill them,” he added.Activists are now urging SDPD to release videos of future shootings as quickly as they did they this time and to release videos before still images.“We want a whole perspective of a situation. Not a half-perspective,” added Harris.Harris also wants the DA’s Office to form a special unit to investigative police misconduct and officer shootings. He’s also calling for more officer training on racial and implicit bias.ABC10 News asked SDPD about the calls for reforms and we are waiting for a reply.SDPD is still investigating Saturday’s shooting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Neighbors in Scripps Ranch are on edge after a series of break-ins over the course of a week at the beginning of March.Residents in the area reported five break-ins or attempted break-ins to the Scripps Ranch Civic Association's Neighborhood Watch from March 9 to March 16.During one of the burglaries on the 11800 block of Charmaine Way, suspects shattered a sliding glass door and were able to take jewelry and electronics.RELATED: Burglar squeezes past security system, raids homeDuring another break-in, it appears the suspect was unable to get into the home, according to the neighborhood watch. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police on the campus of San Diego State University are hoping surveillance photos will lead to an arrest in a recent burglary. The pictures are clear. They show two men walking in the hallway of a campus building. Another photo shows them at a different angle. Police aren't releasing details about the burglary, but they say right now, there is no threat to campus. This is the latest in a series of crimes on or near campus. Last Wednesday night around 8:30, two men armed with guns robbed two people as they sat in their car. It happened in the north alley off of 55th and Montezuma. Taylor Langpap and her roommate, Jessica Ancar, walk the alley all the time to get to their apartment. "I was a little uneasy that it was just really close to my apartment, but I wasn't really surprised cause stuff like that happens all the time here," said Jessica. In the fall, there was a string or robberies where students had their cellphones stolen. In another case, a man was charged with ripping off students who were trying to sell things on the App Offer Up. Campus police aren't saying if the men in the surveillance photos are wanted in any other crimes, but students say they are always taking precautions, especially when walking after dark. "I make sure to call one of my family members or a friend, and then if I am not on the phone with someone, I try to keep very aware of my surroundings. They have blue lights around campus, you just have to make sure where those are so you can get where you are going safely," said Alexandra Howder. 1570
