BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday expressed his optimism over the possible road link with China, saying the construction of the road would boost bilateral trade.Zardari is on his five-day working visit to China, the fifth China tour since he took office as the Pakistani president in 2008. Zardari who once called himself "the first businessman president of Pakistan", said that he had his own "concept" for improving Pakistan-China trade relations.A road connection with China is one of his ideas to make this happen."If you want to come to Pakistan or southeast Asia from China by sea, it will take months, but if you look at the road transportation to my port, it's only 1,100 miles from your border," said Zardari in an interview with Xinhua.Zardari's remarks came amid some reports that China and Pakistan are considering building a rail link to reach the Arabian Sea."The concept has been accepted," said Zardari without elaborating.China and Pakistan have maintained their "all-weathered" and time-tested friendship for decades. Now there are more than 120 companies and about 10,000 Chinese nationals in Pakistan, involved in sectors such as mining, energy exploration and infrastructure building. But Zardari said Pakistan needs more investment.China-Pakistan trade in the first five months of this year reached 3.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 31 percent. While addressing the China-Pakistan Economic Cooperation Forum earlier Friday, Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming said that bilateral trade could hit 15 billion U.S. dollars in 2015.On the just-concluded China-Pakistan anti-terror drill in northwest China, Zardari said the two countries should keep united in the fight against terrorism.

BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The quake zone of Yushu in northwest China has received donations valued at over 8.5 billion yuan (about 1.25 billion U.S. dollars) as of Monday, with about 90 percent being in cash and the remaining in relief materials, said the civil affairs ministry. The ministry said in a statement that it received 2.407 billion yuan while the Qinghai provincial government of the quake zone received nearly 2 billion yuan in donations, with the Red Cross Society of China and the China Charity Federation each raising about 2 billion yuan.About ten percent of the total donations had been allocated to quake relief work along with reconstruction and restoration, the statement said.Yushu was hit by a 7.1-magnitude quake on April 14, with more than 2,200 people being killed and thousands of homes flattened.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said on June 20 that the government would soon implement a reconstruction plan for the area, which sets a goal to accomplish major reconstruction tasks within three years.

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday denied claims in a U.S. government report, saying it exaggerated China's military strength."We firmly oppose this report," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a press release when asked to comment on the annual report by the U.S. Defense Department. She said the report exaggerated China's military strength, and unfairly blamed China for some problems that exist in the bilateral military relationship."China unswervingly sticks to a path of peaceful development and pursues a national defense policy which is defensive in nature," Jiang said, noting that China is devoted to safeguarding peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large."We urge the U.S side to respect this fact," she said.Jiang also urged the United States to stop issuing such reports on China's military, and work towards improving relations between the two militaries and the two nations, instead of working against China.

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Public Security Sunday launched an emergency response to organize rescue work for landslide-hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwestern Gansu Province. The ministry has organized about 1,000 fire fighters and special police in nearby areas to head for the affected region, according to a statement on the ministry's website. As the roads had been hit by the landslides, the police rescuers were heading towards the affected areas on motorbikes, according to the statement. Photo taken by mobile phone shows rescuers searching for missing personnel in Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Gansu Province, Aug. 8, 2010. At least 96 people have been confirmed dead in landslides triggered by torrential rains in Zhouqu County.Police rescuers from Mianyang in Sichuan Province were 130 km away from Zhouqu and those from Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Aba in Sichuan were 70 km away at Sunday noon, according to the statement.Strong rainfalls triggered landslides and mud-rock flows in Zhouqu early Sunday morning, blocking a river which then formed a barrier lake and cutting off power, roads and communication. The disaster has left at least 96 people dead and some 2,000 others missing, according to statistics from local government.

BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) voiced its support on Saturday for journalists' rights of supervision after a reporter was beaten when attempting to interview a stand-up comedian."It is imperative to safeguard journalists' legitimate rights to interview and stop any misconduct that interferes with journalists' legitimate interviews," read a brief announcement posted on the ACJA's website."To have supervision in accordance with the law is the legitimate rights of news organizations," it added. The move came after Zhou Wenfu, a Beijing Television (BTV) reporter, was repeatedly punched Sunday when attempting to interview Guo Degang, China's most famous stand-up comedian at his villa, according to clips of the beating that have been widely circulated on the Internet and broadcast on BTV.Zhou was trying to verify reports that Guo had illegally extended his property onto the public green space.
