SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hate crime charges were filed against two men accused of assaulting a Black journalist who was covering a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Imperial Beach in June.The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced felony assault and battery charges, and hate crime allegations, were filed against 38-year-old Jeffrey Brooks and 32-year-old Henry Brooks Jr. in connection with the June 7 incident at a beach near Veterans Park.Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the two men.RELATED: Man says he was sucker punched at Imperial Beach protestThe DA’s Office alleged Brooks and Brooks Jr. were at the peaceful march in Imperial Beach when they began “verbally and physically antagonizing the protesters.”At one point, Brooks Jr. allegedly threw eggs at a group of protesters.“While recording the scene, the victim was sucker punched in the head by Jeffrey Brooks, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground,” the DA’s Office said in a news release.If convicted of all charges, Brooks faces three years in custody; Brooks Jr. faces six years.District Attorney Summer Stephan said, “Protecting our community from hate crimes is a priority for my office because hate erodes our right to equality and fairness, and it leaves an impact on the victim and everyone who shares the victim’s race. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Early data suggests the coronavirus vaccine candidates from both Pfizer and Moderna are safe and effective, but some patients may experience side effects that can feel intense but resolve quickly.More than 37,000 people have taken either the Pfizer or the Moderna vaccine in a Phase 3 trial. Both vaccines require two doses, and side effects were more common after the second dose.Pfizer reported 3.8% of the recipients felt fatigue and 2% experienced headache, based on preliminary data from its Phase 3 trial. These symptoms are classified as Grade 3 or “severe” adverse events because they can interfere with daily activity.Moderna reported more Grade 3 side effects. There was fatigue in 9.7% of recipients, muscle pain in 8.9%, joint pain in 5.2%, headache in 4.5%, pain in 4.1%, and redness at the injection site in 2%.Neither company reported side effects that affected less than 2% of participants in their press releases but more detailed data will be released.Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco, said the symptoms typically appear in the first few hours after vaccination and resolve within 24 to 36 hours.“The most troublesome of them for people has been low grade temperatures, but they go away in many cases without even using anti-inflammatories” like ibuprofen, he said.Experts say the vaccines appear to have a higher rate of Grade 3 side effects than the typical flu vaccine, even high-dose flu vaccines, but they say there’s no reason to worry about so-called reactogenic symptoms like muscle and joint pain.“Usually if it hurts that's a positive sign. But the increased rates are still extremely rare: an extra 1 to 2 cases for every million doses, according to the CDC.Dr. Ramers said the long-term consequences of contracting COVID-19 are much more concerning.“This is not a virus that you want to get,” he said. “There are unpredictable effects. There are healthy young people developing clots and strokes.”A study on COVID-19 patients in Michigan found that two months after hospitalization, 32.5% had a lingering cough or difficulty breathing and 11% reported new or worsening trouble caring for themselves.Both the FDA and the CDC are taking extra steps to monitor people who get the vaccine early for any side effects. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of protesters gathered in Balboa Park Monday evening, the third day of protests in the San Diego region. A large group began coalescing near the San Diego Police Department headquarters near Broadway and 13th St in the afternoon. As night fell, the group marched up Park Boulevard past San Diego City College and into Balboa Park. Law enforcement officers followed closely. Freeway on-ramps and off-ramp were blocked by CHP officers in tactical gear along the route, preventing protesters from accessing the freeways. After marching through the park, the group stopped near El Prado and Sixth Ave. Many in the group laid down on their stomachs with their arms behind their backs, chanting “I can’t breathe,” in honor of George Floyd, the unarmed black man killed in police custody in Minnesota on May 25, 2020. Afterwards, they held a moment of silence for those killed at the hands of police. Many demonstrators dispersed after, though a group began forming again outside SDPD headquarters. At 10:25, SDPD tweeted that “bottles, fireworks and other objects” were being thrown at officers near their headquarters. Several minutes later, police declared the protest an unlawful assembly and began clearing the area, tweeting, “those who remain or return against this lawful order may be cited/arrested and risk exposure to chemical agents & less-lethal force applications.” As of 11 p.m. SDPD had announced they made one arrest for vandalism. 1481

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fire crews worked to put out large flames at a home on the 4400 block of Park Boulevard Friday night. A 10News viewer shared video showing flames engulfing the yard of the home in University Heights,  dangerously close to the pet grooming business next door.He told 10News people in the area broke the windows of the business to get to dogs inside, worried that the fire might spread to the business. Shortly before 10 p.m. crews were able to put out the flames. San Diego Gas and Electric crews were also on scene to turn off a small gas leak.   624
