SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A great-grandmother is pleading for the return of her late husband's ashes, after the theft of a truck belonging to the moving company she hired.A frustrated Dee Randolph spoke to 10News from her new home in Tennessee. On a day in May, Mission Transportation - the company she hired for the move - loaded up her belongings at her home in La Mesa. That same night, or early the next morning, the truck was stolen from near a parking lot in the 6400 block of Federal Boulevard in Lemon Grove. "I was just in shock. How do you react? I was stunned," said Randolph.Weeks later, the truck was found abandoned outside a vacant building near Escondido.Three-quarters of her possessions were gone, including furniture, clothing and dozens of pieces of jewelry. Also missing was an urn holding the ashes of her husband David, who passed away from a stroke in 2014."I used to carry him with me for about a year. When I was in the kayak, I brought him with me ... made me feel like he was still with me ... Now I don't feel like he's here. I feel like he's gone," said Randolph.Also stolen was a wooden sculpture and several other art pieces crafted by her husband, a millennial print of a Rembrandt etching valued at several thousand dollars, and a detailing of her lineage inside a bible that's been in her family for several centuries."I was passing it onto my grandsons to continue that history," said Randolph.That history is lost for now, along with a piece of Randolph's heart. "You don't think when you hire a moving company that you will lose everything," said Randolph.The monetary loss will be covered by the moving company and her own homeowner's insurance. Randolph hired a private investigator, who obtained surveillance video showing a white van pulling up to the moving truck. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 10News investigation has revealed that the California department responsible for the state’s child welfare program does not maintain data regarding all deaths of children in foster care.  The revelation is prompting calls for immediate action to child welfare services from at least one San Diego-based politician.State law requires counties to report any child death that is determined to be suspected to be the result of abuse or neglect to the California Department of Social Services.  According to the CDSS, each county in California is required to keep track of every foster child that dies while in its custody.Counties are also responsible for reporting all high profile incidents that occur in foster homes to the State Department of Social Services. High profile incidents would include incidents involving death or serious injury. But the CDSS has no master data list available regarding foster deaths and says that information is maintained at the county level.Using open records laws Team 10 collected the total number fatalities of children residing in a foster placement from all 58 counties in the state since 2010.The numbers show more than 250 kids died during that time across the state. 1290

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego State University football team announced Friday it has added a game against the Brigham Young University Cougars in December to complete its shortened schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.The team initially received its schedule from the Mountain West Conference Thursday with a "TBA" game on Dec. 12. That game will now be played against BYU in Provo, Utah.It will be the second straight season that SDSU ends its regular season with the Cougars. Last year on Nov. 30, San Diego State defeated BYU, 13- 3, in what ended up being the Aztecs' final football game at SDCCU Stadium to snap a six-game losing streak in the series and improve to 8-21-1 all-time against Brigham Young.The BYU game will be the sole non-conference game for the Aztecs, excepting any possible post-season play.San Diego State opens its season at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, against UNLV on Oct. 24. The Aztecs will not be playing in SDCCU Stadium this season as it is being demolished to make way for the new Aztec Stadium at SDSU West Campus.The Aztecs are coming off a 10-3 season in 2019, capped by a 48-11 win over Central Michigan in the New Mexico Bowl.San Diego State hits the road for the first time on Oct. 31, when it travels to Utah State for a Halloween clash. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A global recruitment company tells 10News there is a concern that the healthcare system is going to be over-run by patients.It brings up questions whether San Diego County has enough nurses to staff hospitals and medical centers if the coronavirus pandemic goes on for an extended period."The problem that we're seeing now, post-pandemic and coronavirus, is that those nurses can't flock to any one area to support people because the problem is, they have to support locally where they are," said Jon Griffith with the recruitment company GQR. Griffith explained there were supply and demand issues with nurses before COVID-19. Now travel nurses, who would typically fill the void are needed in every state, and not necessarily available to travel."We're seeing people called out of retirement," he said. "Nurses and physicians alike being requested to come out and support. Essentially what we're trying to do at GQR is to tap into those resources or new grad nurses, retired nurses, wherever we can to give that local support to these hospitals to try and mitigate that risk."Griffith told 10News the hospitals they've spoken with are aware of potential challenges and are gearing up to make sure people have their healthcare needs met."They are heroes alright," Griffith said. "We see this all on social media. They are on the frontlines still giving great patient care and focusing on that continuity of care and that right there is what this is all about. But nurses have that fear of being understaffed and hospitals are really trying to rise to that challenge right now."10News asked healthcare providers across San Diego County how they will maintain staffing levels as nurses get sick or burned out, and if they have enough staff to backfill any vacancies.Here are the responses we got back.Sharp Healthcare:Yes, definitely a consideration given the unknowns around how long the COVID-19 outbreak will last. Kaiser PermanenteWe are working with our public health partners to manage all aspects of the health care delivery continuum, and so far, our plans are working even as conditions, needs and priorities change. As we do every flu season, we have contingency plans in place to manage both higher numbers of patients in our facilities and illness among staff. Out of extreme caution as we respond to the challenge of coronavirus, employees who may have been exposed to the virus will remain at home for a 14-day observation period. We are able to manage this in part with fully licensed or certified seasonal contract staff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 12-year-old girl riding a skateboard down a City Heights hill was seriously injured Wednesday when she crashed into the back of a minivan, San Diego police said.According to police, the crash happened just before 5:30 pm. at the intersection of Estrella and Polk avenues.Police said a Toyota Sienna was traveling northbound in the 4000 block of Estrella Avenue when it entered the intersection. The skateboarder going downhill on eastbound Polk Avenue “failed to stop” at the intersection and collided with the minivan’s left rear bumper cover.The girl sustained major injuries, including a fractured skull and brain bleed, according to police. She was rushed to Rady Children’s Hospital for treatment; her condition is unknown. 758
