SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new pilot program in San Diego hopes to break the barrier between older adults and ridesharing apps. Together, Jewish Family Service (JFS) and the Ed Brown Center are testing an outreach and education program connecting older adults with free ridesharing services so they can participate in health and wellness programs.The pilot program is part of a partnership with Lyft and the National Council on Aging (NCOA). The Ed Brown Center was one of three senior centers selected from across the country.The goal is to understand whether ridesharing can improve an older adult’s well-being by enabling them to travel to their local senior center to take part in activities such as health classes, nutrition programs, lifelong learning, and social opportunities.JFS partnered with Lyft two years ago to provide rides to seniors and individuals receiving breast cancer treatment. Called “On the Go: Navigator,” the program allows older adults to easily book rides to the grocery store, doctor’s appointments and more, without a smartphone. With this service, seniors must pay for the trip, as well as a service fee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new program is helping San Diegans get back into the classroom without the fear of crippling student loans. Offered through the San Diego Workforce Partnership and UC San Diego Extension, the program costs nothing upfront.It's called an Income Share Agreement (ISA); tuition is covered, and students agree to pay a small proportion of their income for a set period of time after graduating.The programs include front-end web development, Java programming, business intelligence, or digital marketing; each costs ,500.Adam Taylor is part of the first cohort of students. The Marine Corps veteran is still working to pay back student loans from several years ago but wanted to further his education to increase his salary."It seemed like a little more security in taking a chance and investing in yourself, as opposed to the school loans where they really don't care if you get a job or not," said Taylor, who's studying digital marketing. The program is possible thanks to million in grant funding, with Strada Education Network providing an initial .2 million. Strada granted the money to the Workforce to increase access and diversity in tech through ISAs.The program succeeds if students succeed. Those who get a job and pay back into the program will support future students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A legendary sports radio station is returning to Southern California airwaves with an updated name.The Mighty 1090 abruptly went off the air on April 10, 2019, due to an issue between the station’s parent company and the owners of the Mexico-based radio tower that distributes the station’s signal.But on Monday, Aug. 17, the station once known as the Mighty 1090 will be back on the 1090 AM radio dial as "The Mightier 1090.”Bill Hagen of Mightier 1090 said in a news release, “It’s taken a tireless amount of work from a number of great people to get us to this point. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was taken into custody after he was seen damaging the lobby at the San Diego Police Department’s downtown headquarters.At around 5:30 a.m. Friday, an SDPD officer heard noise coming from inside of the building on 1401 Broadway and saw a man trashing the lobby.Other officers responded, and as they surrounded the lobby from the outside and inside, the man used a large stick or bat to smash glass doors.After some glass broke, officers converged and ordered him to drop the object.Officers deployed less-lethal rounds towards the man and struck him. Once he was on the ground, officers arrested him.Police are reviewing surveillance footage to determine where the man came from and how he ended up inside the building. 751
