(KGTV) - Family and friends are preparing to say goodbye to a Poway teen, killed while driving home from college for Christmas break."She always brings a positive vibe wherever she goes. Her smile can really brighten up the room," said friend Brandon Kim.For the friends of Kim Huynh, smiles for them are hard to muster."To me it was just shock," said Kim.Last Thursday night, the 18-year-old Huynh was driving back home to Poway with her older sister after finishing her first quarter at UC Riverside, when the car spun out on a Murietta highway, slamming into a tree and killing her. Her sister suffered minor injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation."She was one of my closest friends," said Kim. Kim met Huynh in grade school."Super smart. Ten times smarter than me," said Kim.Kim said his friend also had a joyful side and loved having fun. Huynh danced for one of Rancho Bernardo High's dance teams. After graduating, she enrolled at UC Riverside on scholarship. The pre-med student also hoped to help her immigrant parents."She said she wanted to become a doctor to give back to them for taking such good care of her," said Kim.After her death, friends gathered this weekend to remember a promising life cut short."Everybody broke down ... I want to grow up with everyone. The fact I have to leave someone behind breaks my heart," said Kim.The funeral is planned for Thursday. (KGTV) -- A local business and organization are coming together to take steps toward better protecting Alzheimer patients by providing free gun locks.Alzheimer’s San Diego and Poway Weapons and Gear have started the first of its kind program regarding what to do when it’s time to lock up your guns.Eugenia Welch is the President of Alzheimer’s San Diego and spoke to 10News. "As we were working further through this program, there was an incident locally, a gentleman shot his daughter because he didn’t recognize her as a daughter he thought she was an intruder. Luckily she’s fine but that could have been a really bad situation," she said. When families are helping their loved ones who have been diagnosed, they often forget about the guns in the home and how dangerous they could be. "If someone is retired military or retired police officer, they’ve probably had guns in their home their whole life and didn’t even think about it” Welch says.This program gives free gun locks to families. It started over the summer and so far they have given out 100 locks.Poway Weapons and Gear has donated 500 locks and tells 10News they will continue to donate as need grows.The program hits close to home for the business because the owner’s grandmother was also diagnosed with the disease.With the locks on guns they become completely unusable, preventing the cylinder from going back in with the rounds to allow the gun to be fired.While the ideal situation is for the guns to be completely removed, the organization says this is the next best option. 1610

President Donald Trump provided an update to the White House’s response to the coronavirus pandemic at a news conference on Wednesday.While coronavirus deaths are on the rise, cases appear to be leveling off. On Tuesday, there were 1,399 coronavirus-related deaths reported, according to Johns Hopkins University figures.While the positivity rate has dropped off slightly in recent days (from 8.6% to 8.3%), some public health experts are baffled by a drop in testing. Data indicates that fewer Americans are being tested for the virus. Part of the reason could be due to delays in getting results.Johns Hopkins University data indicates that 28 states saw a decline in testing. Among the states seeing declines in testing are Florida, Mississippi, Georgia and Arkansas, which are seeing higher positivity rates compared to the rest of the US. Only eight states have ramped up testing, according to the data.Despite the drop in testing, the White House has said that the US has “created the best COVID-19 testing system in the world.”“The United States also has far and away the most robust testing capacity in the world,” Trump said on Tuesday. “Testing has been incredible, what we’ve been able to do. Nobody is even close. Since March 12th, we’ve increased daily testing by 32,000 percent. How’s that?”While public health experts suggest that more tests would lead to a lower positivity rate, America’s positivity rate remains much higher than a number of developed nations, including Canada, Spain, Germany and Italy. The US positivity rate remains lower than a handful of countries, including, Mexico, India and Iran. Data from another hard-hit nation, Brazil, is not widely available.Ashish K. (KGTV) — A Poway High School student has been arrested for allegedly making threats to shoot classmates.Friday, the parent of a Poway High student reported several threats were made by another student, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.The student, who was not named, was in an argument with a group of students and threatened to bring a gun to school and shoot the students, SDSO said.Deputies responded to the student's home but did not find a firearm at the home.The student was taken to Juvenile Hall and charged with making criminal threats.SDSO reminds parents and students that deputies investigate all schools threats and encourages them to report any perceived threats to authorities. 754

POTRERO, Calif. (CNS) - A 71-year-old man was killed when he was run over by his own Smart Car after he unhitched it from a motorhome at a campground in the far southern reaches of San Diego County, authorities said Friday. The accident happened around 5 p.m. Thursday at Potrero County Park, northeast of Tecate, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Christy said. The Federal Way, Washington, resident had just returned from a trip to Mexico and parked his motorhome, which was towing a late model Smart Car, at the campground, Christy said. When the man, whose name was withheld pending family notification, uncoupled the hitch between the Smart Car and the rear of the motorhome, the car began to roll backward, the officer said. ``The male had failed to ensure the emergency brake was set on the Smart Car,'' Christy said. ``The male ran to the rear of the vehicle and attempted to stop its movement, but was overcome by its momentum.'' The car ran over the victim, pinning him underneath it. Witnesses contacted emergency personnel while good Samaritans attempted to lift the car off of him, but they were unsuccessful, Christy said. Firefighters arrived and lifted the car off the victim using hydraulic jacks, then paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. 1329
