SORRENTO VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - Another San Diego-based company is moving forward on developing a vaccine for the coronavirus. Sorrento Therapeutics is working on several projects that they believe could lead to viable vaccines or treatments. One of them was announced on Monday. Sorrento Therapeutics said it was partnering with Boston-based Smartpharm to create a gene-encoded antibody vaccine. “In the effort to more quickly resolve the global COVID-19 crisis, our company has initiated a rapidly accelerated program for the identification of potent neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus antigens that may be used for either treatment or prophylaxis,” said Henry Ji, CEO of Sorrento Therapeutics. Sorrento Therapeutics is also working on another vaccine called the I-Cell project. That vaccine uses a decoy virus to activate a person’s immune system to train it to attack the real virus. It’s also developing a protein called COVIDTRAP that can bind to the receptors on the coronavirus, thus blocking it from being able to bind to the receptors on healthy human cells. If proven succesful, it could be used as a treatment or preventative measure.How long will it take for them to be ready?“That all depends on what leeway the FDA gives us,” said Mark Brunswick, Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at Sorrento Therapeutics. Starbucks is exchanging its iconic green straws for recyclable strawless lids.The newer tops were modeled after the lids the coffee company has used on their hot drinks.They will have a drinking spout and contain about 9% "less plastic than the flat lid and straw historically used for iced beverages."“We developed and trialed several prototypes to arrive at this milestone,” said Andy Corlett, director of global packaging solutions and innovations, in a press release. “A recyclable, strawless lid becoming the standard for iced drinks is one small way we can give more than we take from the planet. This is a significant moment for Starbucks as we work to reduce waste and safeguard the environment.”Corlett and his team helped design the lid, the company said.Drinks with whipped cream and blended drinks, like frappuccinos, will still come with a domed lid and straw.The company plans to reduce 50% of waste by 2030.Lids will be rolled out to stores in the US and Canada in the coming year, the company said.Straws will still be available upon request, the company said. 1084

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team said Friday that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort lied on five major issues after agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors, including his "contact with administration officials."In a heavily-redacted document released Friday, Mueller's team also said Manafort lied about his interactions with Konstantin Kilimnik, his Russian associate who Mueller has said has ties to the Russian military intelligence unit accused of hacking the Democrats, and how they may have worked together to tampered with witnesses following Manafort's arrest last year.The investigators say they have evidence about electronic communications related to Kilimnik and travel records. Much of the details the prosecutors released to the court Friday were redacted in the public version of the document.The special counsel believes Manafort also lied about a wire transfer made to a firm he had hired and "information pertinent to another Department of Justice investigation."The special counsel's office last week accused Manafort of lying during his interviews, saying that his actions during his cooperation were criminal and breached his plea agreement.The filing is the first time prosecutors have summarized why and how they believe Manafort breached his plea agreement. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell cut a deal with Democratic leaders in the upper chamber to clear a slate of President Donald Trump's nominees, one of the top August priorities for the Kentucky Republican.The deal, which permitted 11 nominees to be cleared immediately and another eight to be voted on next week, also will allow senators who missed most of their August recess to go home for a couple of days before many come back at the end of the week to say farewell to their colleague Sen.
