SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An 18-year-old man was shot twice in the stomach during an armed robbery early Thursday morning in a Mission Beach parking lot, police said.Two 18-year-old men were in a car leaving a party at the Bahia Resort Hotel, 998 West Mission Bay Drive, when they were approached by two men on foot in a public parking lot on Gleason Road at around 12:30 a.m.One of the men on foot pulled out a gun and pointed it at the pair in the car while demanding items from them, San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims said. The victims got out of the car and the man with the gun stole a chain necklace from one of the victims.The other victim tackled the gunman and was shot twice in the stomach, the officer said.The suspects fled in an unknown vehicle and the victim who had his necklace stolen drove the gunshot victim to a hospital for treatment of his wounds, Heims said. The gunshot victim underwent surgery, but an update on his status was not immediately available.A detailed description of the suspects was not immediately available. 1061

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was suspected of stealing a car from a Rolando Park used auto dealership early this morning, then crashing the car when he tried to flee from police.An unknown number of accomplices stole three other cars from the same dealership, and all the accomplices remained unaccounted for Sunday afternoon, San Diego Police Officer Sarah Foster said.Two of the cars were eventually recovered, while one was still outstanding.Police were alerted to a break-in around 2 a.m. at Cash For Cars on University Avenue, Foster said. Officers spotted one of the four stolen cars leaving the parking lot and tried to pull it over.The driver fled, and police pursued him until he crashed into an embankment on College Avenue near Streamview Drive, Foster said.The suspect was arrested with the help of a police dog after he tried to hide from officers in a home near the spot where he crashed, Foster said.The man was treated for a bite wound before being booked into jail.Detectives were continuing to search for the remaining suspects. 1049

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Confirmed flu cases in San Diego County are well behind the rate of confirmed cases during last year's flu season, according to county health officials.The county has confirmed 189 flu cases so far this flu season compared to 441 cases at this time last year. According to county public health officer Wilma Wooten, flu cases usually increase during the holidays due to increased traveling and large family gatherings."Holiday gatherings and celebrations bring people together in large groups raising the possibility of people getting sick and making others ill," Wooten said. "Get a flu shot before the flu starts to spread and so that you are protected during the holidays."The county's weekly influenza report found 33 lab-confirmed flu cases for the week of Nov. 4-10. Only one county resident has died due to flu complications this season, compared to three at this time last flu season. Flu complications killed 342 people in San Diego County last season, the highest total since the county began tracking flu deaths roughly 20 years ago.The county and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that everyone 6 months or older get vaccinated against the flu each year. It is especially important for those at risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions, to get the vaccine. Residents should also wash their hands regularly, stay away from sick people and clean surfaces that are touched often.The flu vaccine is available at doctors' offices, local retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health center. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man who sexually assaulted three women, some of whom were unconscious during the acts, was sentenced Friday to six years in state prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.Juan Carlos Cordero, 37, pleaded guilty in September to three felony sexual assault counts stemming from allegations that he assaulted women he met on dating sites or in person between 2015 and 2019.Cordero pleaded guilty to penetration of an unconscious victim by a foreign object, forcible sodomy and sodomy of an unconscious victim, with each count corresponding to women identified only as Jane Does 1 through 3.RELATED: San Diego women face their accused rapist at preliminary hearingSome of the victims alleged they may have been drugged by the defendant and testified during a preliminary hearing last year that while with Cordero, they blacked out and woke up in his bed, with little to no recollection of the previous night.Many testified that they discovered they'd suffered injuries that led them to believe they had been sexually assaulted.Some women testified they felt drugged the following morning but had no memory of how that may have occurred, while others testified that Cordero forced alcohol or drugs on them.RELATED: Sex assault suspect may have more victims, San Diego Police sayIn addition to the three victims Cordero pleaded guilty to assaulting, testimony also came from several other women alleging he committed similar acts on them, as state law allows testimony from alleged victims of defendants charged with sexual offenses in order to establish a pattern of behavior.Cordero was arrested in March 2019.Following his arrest and the District Attorney's Office filing of felony charges, San Diego police put a call out for any potential victims, stating that Cordero had been known to identify himself as "J.C." to young women in the area. 1895

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A report released Thursday by the International Boundary and Water Commission found a significant presence of wastewater in border channels in the Tijuana River Basin impacting San Diego.In the report, "Binational Water Quality Study of the Tijuana River and Adjacent Canyons and Drains," scientists from the United States and Mexico collected samples from of seven transboundary channels.The sampling and laboratory analysis for the study were performed from December 2018 to November 2019. The findings indicate the presence of treated and untreated domestic and industrial wastewater.The scientists analyzed 267 different parameters in water and 204 parameters in sediment for pathogens, metals, industrial organics, pesticides, as well as conventional parameters typically found in wastewater. Of the parameters tested, 131 were not detected and 136 had detectable levels.Parameters that exceeded standards in both countries at all monitoring sites are those associated with the presence of wastewater, including ammonia, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, oils and greases, phosphorus, nitrates, methylene blue active substances and coliform bacteria.Data analysis indicates that the parameters which exceeded standards had originated as uncontrolled sewage spills from Tijuana. Disposal of solid waste or trash contributes to the presence of certain parameters exceeding the standards, such as the organic compound DEHP. Commonly used in the manufacture of plastics, DEHP exceeded applicable standards at all monitoring sites and could have leached from plastic accumulated in the canyons and Tijuana River.The results showed that certain parameters of concern -- Hexavalent Chromium and the pesticides DDT and Aldrin -- were either not detected or found in very low amounts below the limits established in both countries' applicable regulations. Likewise, metals such as copper, nickel and zinc, which are commonly used in the metal plating industry, were detected at levels within applicable standards in both countries.The report also includes recommendations related to control of industrial wastewater discharges in Tijuana, increased resources and assistance for wastewater collection and treatment systems in Tijuana, and continued joint water-quality monitoring and field inspections to detect and respond timely to wastewater flows. 2389
