PASADENA (CNS) - Joe Coulombe, the San Diego native who founded the Trader Joe's grocery chain and grew it from a single outlet in Pasadena to more than 500 stores in 40 states, has died following years of declining health. He was 89.Coulombe's son, Joe Jr., told reporters his father died late Friday at his home in Pasadena where he had been under hospice care."We're going to miss him a lot," his son told the Pasadena Star- News. "I think people are going to remember the wonderful Trader Joe's concept he put in place, and especially his treatment of his employees. He really cared about them."Those memories were already trending on social media early Saturday, with special note being made of Trader Joe's wages and unique, healthy foods."Trader Joe's is a model that every business should emulate," Twitter user NYGiantsfan74 posted. "The products are great, the prices are great and every ... employee is happy. I love Trader Joe's. Please don't ever change and become greedy."Another user simply expressed thanks "for Pirate's Booty and your free sample station."Coulombe, a San Diego native who was raised in Del Mar and earned a master's in business administration from Stanford University, began his retail career in 1958. His bosses at Rexall Drugs hired him to open a chain of 7-Eleven style convenience stores, which he later bought when the company abandoned the idea.But as 7-Eleven began encroaching on his territory, Coulombe shifted to what would become the Trader Joe's model: healthy foods that shoppers could not find in other markets, sold at reasonable prices in stores with South Seas nautical decor and employees dressed in Hawaiian-style shirts.The first Trader Joe's opened in 1967 on Arroyo Boulevard in Pasadena where it still stands Saturday, having spawned scores of similar outlets nationwide.Along the way, Trader Joe's gained a loyal following for everything from its "Two Buck Chuck" Charles Shaw wine and skincare products to its periodic "Fearless Flyer" newsletter, featuring the latest products and occasional behind-the-scenes podcast."Scientific American had a story that of all people qualified to go to college, 60 percent were going," Coulombe told the Los Angeles Times for a 2014 profile. "I felt this newly educated -- not smarter but better educated -- class of people would want something different, and that was the genesis of Trader Joe's."In later years, Coulombe became a noted philanthropist providing support for such organizations at the Los Angeles Opera and the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, sat on several corporate boards and thrived as an amateur painter and occasional food and wine commentator.Coulombe, who retired in 1988, is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alice, three children, and six grandchildren."He was a brilliant thinker with a mesmerizing personality that simply galvanized all with whom he worked," Trader Joe's CEO Dan Bane said Saturday. "He was not only our founder, he was our first spokesperson. He starred in captivating radio ads for years, always signing off with his unique, 'thanks for listening.' PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla — CVS has pulled all powdered Enfamil baby formula off its shelves as its pharmacy department does an internal review. The move comes after a Florida mother shared her story about what she found inside a tub of formula with Scripps station WFTS in Tampa.Alison Denning says her package of Enfamil baby formula was tampered with before she opened the package."When I opened it up, this seal that wraps around was opened,” she said. RELATED: Mom says baby formula bought at nearby CVS was replaced with flourDenning says the package looked fine on the outside and even had the protective seal intact on the lid, which is why she didn’t think twice about buying it. But when she got it home, she knew what she found inside was not baby formula. She sent the product back to the manufacturer for lab testing. She says Enfamil has been extremely friendly and helpful.Enfamil said Denning's is an “isolated incident” and haven’t had any other reports of flour for this particular batch of formula. But this isn't the first time baby formula has tampered with — last year, a woman was arrested in Tucson, Arizona after she was found guilty of swapping baby formula with flour at two Walmart stores in the area. One baby was sickened after ingesting the tampered product but is doing OK now, according to the Associated Press.“There is no recall related to this or other Enfamil branded products,” Lynn Kenney said. She's the Head of Corporate Communications, North America for the makers of Enfamil, Reckitt Benckiser. Even still, CVS decided to pull the product."Enfamil powder is temporarily unavailable in our stores due to an internal review being conducted by CVS Pharmacy," CVS said in a statement. "Our store employees can assist customers with finding an alternative product in the meantime. We apologize for any inconvenience.”"I’m very relieved that they’re taking this seriously,” said Denning.Denning got a sample size of Enfamil powdered baby formula from her pediatrician Wednesday."It’s an aluminum pop top,” she said. "Once you break the seal, you’ll know right away if someones been in it.”Denning thinks it's much more tamper-proof than the tubs with bags inside. "Anyone who’s not 100% familiar with formula may have made a really bad mistake,” she said. Enfamil says there is no recall on any of its products but encourages anyone that purchases its products to check the appearance of the package — even differences that may be minor could be meaningful. PIKELOT ISLAND – Like out of a movie, three missing mariners were rescued from a deserted island in the Pacific after writing “SOS” in the sand.Authorities in the U.S. and Australia say the three men departed Puluwat Atoll on a 23-foot skiff last Thursday, intending to travel 21 nautical miles to Pulap, Chuuk.However, they never made it to their destination and were reported missing, according to the Anderson Air Force Base, Guam. A rescue mission was then launched.“Joint Rescue Sub-Center Guam received notification of an overdue skiff last seen in the vicinity of Chuuk and requested our assistance,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Shaun McRoberts, 506th Air Expeditionary Aerial Refueling Squadron assistant director of operations. “Once notified, we began immediately working a plan to launch crews to locate the missing vessel.”After almost three hours into their mission and flying at about 1,500 feet, rescue crews located the mariners on the tiny, uninhabited island of Pikelot, Yap.“We were toward the end of our search pattern,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jason Palmeira-Yen. “We turned to avoid some rain showers and that’s when we looked down and saw an island, so we decide to check it out and that’s when we saw SOS and a boat right next to it on the beach. From there we called in the Australian Navy because they had two helicopters nearby that could assist and land on the island.”Early in the morning on Monday, authorities say a small boat crew was launched and rescued the mariners.The sailors told officials that they ran off course while traveling and eventually ran out of gas, according to the Australian Navy. 1643

  

Pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly plans on distributing a treatment for coronavirus patients this week. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just gave it the green light.The antibody treatment is for patients over the age of 65 who have mild to moderate symptoms. Patients who are 12 years and up are also eligible if they have an underlying health condition.The FDA approval comes at a time when cases are going up again and hospitals are struggling to treat so many patients.Infectious disease experts say one of the biggest challenges for hospitals right now is to figure out where they want to administer the treatment.It is given through an IV and usually, IV treatments are given in an outpatient setting to cancer patients.“If you're talking about hospitals that have infusion centers for cancer and chemotherapy, that's not generally a place where they're going to feel comfortable taking COVID-19 patients in the contagious phase of their disease, because they also have highly immuno-compromised patients there,” said Dr. Shira Doron, a hospital epidemiologist at Tufts Medical Center.Some hospitals in the U.S. already have the resources and space to administer the treatment to COVID-19 patients, but many still don't.Another option would be to administer it in an emergency room, while still following the same criteria for who receives it.While there are guidelines for who receives it, cases are rising. That could add another limitation to how many patients get the new antibody treatment.“And then how will patients be referred to that facility? Will doctors know about that? And defining exactly which patients will benefit from this is somewhat still up in the air,” said Doron.Health and Human Services will be responsible for distributing the treatment. PALA MESA, CA (KGTV) -- 10News is now digging deeper in the history of violations issued to the company that operated the bus that was involved in this rainy Saturday's deadly crash on I-15 just south of Pala Mesa. “One life lost is too many,” says Chris Turner with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. We spoke to him over FaceTime on Monday. The bus was operated by Executive Lines Inc., based in El Monte. According to the federal administration that oversees bus inspections, the company's fleet has had no crashes over the past two years, until now. However, they have had 26 maintenance violations, reportedly. After a November 2019 inspection, the same bus that was involved in this weekend's crash was reportedly issued two violations related to windshield wipers and spare fuses. Turner says violations like those should’ve been fixed right away. “Those need to be remedied before the vehicle is dispatched again,” he adds.10News spoke to attorney Nathan Morris about a separate major bus crash that happened last September in Utah, injuring 22 tourists. He's representing seven of the victims. “[I’m representing] three of those who were killed in the crash and their families as well as four others who were injured to various degrees,” he adds.Morris says bus passengers can look online for a snapshot of a company's safety. “They have a right as passengers of that bus to make sure that the driver and the companies and anybody else are held accountable for keeping the rules,” he says.“You enter the company's USDOT number and it will tell you whether or not they’re a safe company,” says Turner of researching bus companies online. A USDOT number is issued by the Department of Transportation. If you can’t find it on a company’s website, Turner says you can make a phone call. He adds, “One of the things they should readily give you when asked is the USDOT number and if not, that's immediately a red flag. Why won't you provide the number that just lets me check to make sure you're safe?”10News contacted Executive Lines Inc. on Monday to ask if there was anyone who could speak about the crash.
