The National Domestic Violence Hotline is being flooded with a record number of people asking for help. The hotline, which operates 24 hours a day, took in more than 570,000 calls, texts and online chats last year, a jump of more than 30 percent from the year prior. The increase has put a strain on the organization.“When we see spikes like we did last year, we're just not prepared to respond to that kind of growth,” says National Domestic Violence Hotline CEO Katie Ray-Jones. Ray-Jones believes there are a couple reasons for the spike, including the #MeToo Movement, as well as high-profile domestic violence cases like the one involving R&B singer R. Kelly and former White House aide Rob Porter. “We know that people see threads of themselves in that story and it prompts them to either one, recognize ‘I don't want my current situation to turn out like that, so let me reach out for help’ or they're recognizing ‘Gosh, this is really serious and I need to connect to someone right now for help.’” Ray-Jones says the hotline is on track to set another record. So far this year, more people are reaching out for help than last year at this time. The hotline is federally funded, which is why Ray-Jones came to Washington, D.C. to talk with members of Congress.“We did a congressional briefing to highlight the increase in volume that we've received, as well as we received our 5 millionth contact several weeks ago,” she says. “And we wanted to illustrate and commemorate that bittersweet moment for the organization and recognize there's 5 million. A 14-year-old girl was arrested and charged with murder after police say she tied down and killed a 59-year-old Philadelphia man known for his animal rescue efforts.Philadelphia police said they responded early November 5 to a report of a man in distress. Police entered the home and found a man, later identified as Albert Chernoff, partially tied to the bed with a massive head wound and several slashes to his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.A female was seen leaving the property before police arrived, and police released surveillance video from inside the home in an attempt to identify her. The girl, who is 14, arrived with her mother and two defense attorneys to turn herself in, police said.She was arrested November 8 and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 27, court documents show. Given her arrest, the surveillance video has since been removed, police said.Police have not named the girl.Jane Roh, a spokeswoman for the Philadelphia district attorney, said officials have not decided whether to proceed in juvenile or adult court.One of the teenager's attorneys, Howard Taylor, told CNN the girl is currently in juvenile detention."It's a very sad situation. A Halloween display featuring President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama put up outside of a Fowlerville, Michigan, auto shop has drawn concern and even death threats to the owner. The original display was put up three weeks ago outside of Quality Coatings on Carr Street. It was a scarecrow with Trump’s facemask holding a rope and Obama’s facemask at the bottom of the rope. Under the Trump scarecrow foot was a Hillary Clinton mask. Just a few days ago, the auto shop owner took down the rope and Obama’s head and placed a sash on the Trump scarecrow that says, “PC Police.” A post on social media displaying the original decorations went viral, with many claiming the rope looked like a noose. The shop owner, who refused to go on camera, says it was not meant to be racist, rather the rope was meant to look like a spine and a move from the game Mortal Kombat. "I feel like it was supposed to be a noose and he says there’s no winners, yet who’s holding Obama's head?," said Ashley Tyler who lives near the display. (WPLG/CNN) - A Broward County, Florida, man's Ring surveillance camera captured someone relieving himself on his driveway during the day."I know when it comes for you to go, you have to go," said victim Wilton Thomas.Thomas is trying to understand the situation but is frustrated after seeing the surveillance video of some dude dropping a deuce on his driveway."He could have drove himself right toward the left in the fence, toward the coconut tree and do what he wants to do there. That would be no problem, but in my driveway?"
