SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A trip to Petco Park means a taste of several of San Diego's best craft beers.But sometimes, it can get costly making the rounds at the ballpark for your favorite brews. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After getting approved by voters, San Diego State is moving forward with its SDSU Mission Valley Plan. As they are still working out the finishing touches, community members are offering their suggestions to organizers. SDSU Mission Valley still calls for a stadium, housing for students and the public, retail space, offices and a river park. Local land use and design professionals met in Balboa Park this morning to offer their ideas on how to enhance and improve the existing plans."They want to make sure that this very large development... isn't like an island in the middle of Mission Valley," says Cary Lowe, with C3 San Diego. Community members want to ensure the project "connects fluidly with the surrounding community."There are other concerns, as well. Once construction begins, crews may have to remediate a gas plume that once sat under the site."A number of people have raised the issue of the subsurface contamination of the site," says Lowe. This has "been a long time issue because of a leak from fuel tanks in Murphy Canyon."Lowe says there is an elaborate plan for the possible contamination removal. But as negotiations continue, it is unclear if the city or university will be paying for it. Land use and design professionals estimate the project to begin towards the beginning of next year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Air Force pilot killed during the Vietnam war will finally be laid to rest Saturday. Major Roy Knight Jr. died in action in 1967 when his plane was shot down over Laos. In the following decades there were multiple efforts to find his remains. It wasn’t until earlier this year that investigators discovered Knight and used dental records to identify him. “It is remarkable; I can’t believe it happened,” said his son Roy Knight III of Valley Center. Knight’s family had almost given up hope of seeing him buried. “There's a bunch of emotions that happen. First is just enormous gratitude for the people that went in and got him and that we as a nation continued to try to find him.” Thursday, Knight’s remains were taken from Laos to Dallas Love Field on a Southwest flight. In the cockpit was Knight’s oldest son, a Southwest pilot who saw his father leave for Vietnam at the same airport years ago. “We came up with the idea of what if would it be possible, and it required both tremendous effort on the part of the Air Force and Southwest Airlines to make it happen,” Knight said. Knight said his father was and always will be his hero. “The tremendous respect and honor shown my father, and and there's no doubt he earned that as does every one of our armed forces, especially our fallen.” Major Roy Knight Jr. will be buried in Weatherford, Texas. 1382

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After seven years of demanding that their death and disability benefits be restored, San Diego City Firefighters finally had their voices heard after the City Council voted unanimously to bring the benefits back.The council made the decision less than five minutes after the firefighters arrived at City Hall and was met with a standing ovation.The benefits were eliminated after the passing of Proposition B, so all firefighters hired after 2012, about 350, never received them."All other firefighters across the state and most across the country have a defined death-and-disability if killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty, they have a pension, and they have pay parity," said Jesse Connor, president of the firefighters union.The benefits provide city employees injured in the line of duty and unable to continue work 50 percent of their base salary until death. For those killed in the line of duty, the money would go to their spouse.After lengthy back and forth talks between the city's firefighters union and the city's labor negotiators, an agreement was made.But, in that time, the union says it had trouble with recruitment and retention, leading to countless hours of overtime as firefighters continued to serve the community every day and hour of the week.Now, they say they are feeling thankful that all firefighters will have equal benefits."It's amazing," said 17-year veteran of the city's fire department, Tony Tosca. "The word 'unity' comes to mind. We're all equally happy for the same benefits, and moving forward it's a great thing to know that everyone coming on we're all gonna have that same equal benefit." 1671

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid rising health care costs, some San Diegans are turning to telehealth appointments. On a Monday afternoon, young Josephine sits in an exam room. She's come down with cold-like symptoms after recovering from enlarged tonsils. So her mom, Josie Ruiz, brought her to their neighborhood clinic, La Maestra Community Health Center in City Heights. For this appointment, one doctor is waiting in the exam room, and another is on a computer screen.Dr. Anthony Magit is an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist and pediatrician at Rady Children's Hospital. As he watches from his office, the clinic's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Javier Rodriguez, conducts an exam. Cameras and camera-equipped scopes feed real-time data to the specialist, who then asks questions. The exam is part of La Maestra's telehealth program, which offers virtual appointments to underserved patients."Before telehealth, my previous appointments ... some of them I had to cancel or reschedule," said Ruiz.Ruiz is a single mom who works full time."This is great because in my case I don't have to request a day off to take her to the hospital, which I can't afford to do," said Ruiz.Most of the patients at this clinic don't own cars. For them, getting to Rady Children's Hospital means hours on buses, which can lead to major issues related to work and child care.Six years ago, doctors at the clinic discovered many referrals to Rady Children's Hospital weren't showing up. That has changed. No-show rates went from about 50% to 13% within two years. Across the county, other hospitals are tuning in to telemedicine, from home appointments for rural patients to consultations with specialists across the country.
