When she was a baby, she was adopted.“You feel kind of alone,” Silvas said.She only knows a few things about her biological mother; she was 15 years old when she had Katherin, and she is from Kentucky."I even went to the extent of giving my biological mother a name. You know when you say compelling, I mean heartbreaking," said Rafi Mendelsohn with MyHeritage. "We've seen and almost been surprised actually how for adoptees it's incredibly powerful and the technology is. It can be incredibly powerful for those searching for their biological family, so we're going to be sending out 15,000 kits."DNA can connect people to anyone else who has already taken the test."Everyone receives matches. Whether you receive matches to your parents or siblings, it depends who's taking the test. Even if you don't as an adoptee get a match with the parent or the sibling you're looking for, we've seen so many cases where people have had a match with an uncle or even a second or third fourth cousin and it's through that match that they're able to close the loop," Mendelsohn said.One of the biggest concerns is privacy, people who've given up a baby for adoption who did so with an understanding that it would be completely private, not knowing that DNA technology years later could ignore that."For someone who may have over a long period of time built up expectations for whatever reunion would look like they would be very disappointed if it didn't go the way that they had hoped," said Ryan Hanlon with the National Council for Adoption. He thinks it can be problematic; some people don't want to be found and when people go looking it can end in heartache."For those instances where an individual doesn't want to be found or doesn't want to be connected to it can be disconcerting for them," Hanlon said.But others point to the examples of good outcomes times when people are able to reunite.That's why Silvas is looking forward to the possibility of finding her biological family even if there's a risk she will be disappointed."It's a need to feel connected with anyone else on this globe besides my daughter," she said. 3034

DEL MAR (KGTV) - Beachgoers are asked to stay away from a section of shoreline near 8th Street in Del Mar because of a sewage spill Sunday.Del Mar city officials said a leak was reported around 11:30 this morning. Sewage was flowing out of a manhole near 8th Street, they said. A blockage in the sewer line caused about 4,200 gallons of sewage to seep out of the manhole and flow onto the beach. The blockage was fixed around 1 p.m., city officials said. People are asked to stay out of the water between 7th Street and 9th Street for the next 72 hours because of impacts to water quality. City officials will continue to test the water. 670

DENVER – One person was hospitalized after being shot Tuesday afternoon near Cole Arts and Sciences Academy and DSST: Cole Middle School in Denver.Officers responded to the scene after a “possible shooting” was reported, Denver police said shortly after 2 p.m. Police said the shooting did not happen inside a school.Video shows more than a dozen police officers at the scene. DENVER – The Facebook data of 136,000 Coloradans obtained by British data firm Cambridge Analytica is still floating around despite claims it was destroyed, according to a Wednesday report from U.K.-based Channel 4 News. But the man who was in charge of the Colorado group that used the firm during the 2014 election says neither he nor the group possesses the data.Channel 4 News says its reporters had reviewed the data, which its report said came from a Cambridge Analytica source. The report says the data confirms details on the thousands of Colorado residents affected, as well as “each person’s personality and psychological profile.”The reporter who presented the story spoke with several Colorado residents whose data was contained within the list, which was in possession of Channel 4’s source, according to a Channel 4 employee who agreed to speak with Scripps station KMGH in Denver about the story on the condition they not be named.“The data is also known to have been passed around using generic, non-corporate email systems, outside of the servers of Cambridge Analytica, and linked company SCL,” the report states.The Channel 4 employee says the data appears to have been widely shared in the past.Channel 4 verified that the 2014 data it reviewed is authentic and came, in part, from a Cambridge University researcher, Dr. Aleksandr Kogan. Kogan built an app in which he used the data in accordance with Facebook’s rules at the time, but he originally said he was using the data only for academic purposes before teaming up with Cambridge Analytica. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - On the 80th Anniversary of Del Mar horse racing the industry is facing extra scrutiny over protecting the animals. This comes after 30 horses died at the Santa Anita Racetrack this past year.One of the newest safety protocols is bringing on two monitoring veterinarians who are stationed at elevated observation points to oversee morning workouts. If the veterinarian is concerned about a horse, they can radio outriders policing the track to remove horses and have them undergo a follow-up examination for soundness. "There's been a lot of concern over racehorse welfare and safety the past few months, it's something that Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has always been concerned about," said Dr. Alina Vale, one of the monitoring veterinarians.But Vale says they're now even more cautious and vigilant, working to rebuild the California racehorse community."The more subtle signs that I'm looking for are horses that might have mild injuries that haven't been detected before, so we're trying to catch those mild injuries before they become major injuries," said Dr. Vale. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club also adopted new medication standards and can randomly select any horse for drug testing at any time. Workout activity will also be monitored closely. The number of horse deaths has dropped in recent years at Del Mar, with four in all of 2018.Dr. Vale encourages people to come to the track during morning training to see the care that goes into horses outside of racing. 1507
