BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Some 53.2 million people hit the roads in China on Wednesday, the third day of the "golden week", said a Ministry of Transport (MOT) spokesman.     Although that figure was an increase of 5.1 percent year-on-year, it was 4.2 percent lower than Tuesday's 55.5 million, because most travelers began their journey in the first two days of the holiday, he said.     The "golden week" National Day holiday this year runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 5.     The spokesman said 740,000 medium-sized and large vehicles were used to move travelers around the country on Wednesday, compared with Tuesday's 760,000 vehicles. BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- The country's top 500 giants are narrowing gap with foreign counterparts, but they still lag behind, the China Enterprise Confederation announced in its release of the 2008 Top 500 Chinese enterprises list on Saturday.     According to the report, the total revenue of the top 500 Chinese enterprises reached 2.99 trillion U.S. dollars (1 dollar=7.3046 yuan, calculated under the exchange rate in 2007), profits 188.4 billion U.S. dollars and assets 8.17 trillion U.S. dollars.Revenues were equivalent to 12.67 percent of the global top 500, profits equaled 11.85 percent and assets 7.79 percent, compared with 10.7 percent, 6.5 percent and 7.8 percent respectively last year.     Analysts said the growing proportion of revenue and profits indicated that Chinese companies had become more competitive and profitable.     Confederation deputy president Li Jianming said the country's growing economy had benefited these enterprises in spite of price hikes for oil and other materials.     He also said private enterprises had grown more robust and capable of taking in advanced technology and management from world giants. They accounted for about a fifth of the country's top 500 enterprises.     In addition, their rising investment in research and development and their emphasis on exploring the domestic market increased competition. The growth rate of net profits of the country's top 500 was 19 times faster than that of the world's top500.     However, another confederation deputy president Wang Jiming said Chinese enterprises still fell behind in innovation, investment in research and development, and the ability to operate internationally. It would take a long time to catch up.     Only 39 enterprises reported overseas sales income of more than 30 percent of the total revenue. Research and development spending accounted for only 1.32 percent of their total revenue, compared with the international average of 3 percent to 5 percent.     Poor supply chain management also lagged behind. Logistics coststill accounted for much of the total output, twice that of the world average. Haier and Huawei were among the few enterprises that paid adequate attention to supply chain management.     Sinopec Corp, Asia's top oil refiner, retained top spot for the fourth straight year on the Top 500 Chinese Enterprises list with its business revenue exceeding 1.2 trillion yuan, (175.2 billion U.S. dollars), the China Enterprise Confederation (CEC) said on Saturday.     The oil giant was followed by the State Grid and PetroChina Company.     The top 500 companies paid taxes of 1.74 trillion yuan, accounting for 35.2 percent of the national tax revenue.     Baosteel Group Co. and China FAW Corporation and Hongfujin Precision Industry (Shenzhen) Co. held the top three positions in manufacturing sector.     The State Grid Corp. of China, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and China Mobile ranked the top three in the service sector.

Chinese President Hu Jintao Saturday night speaks at a meeting on rescue and relief work of the earthquake, expressing gratitudes to foreign countries and people who have offered aid since a major earthquake struck the country.Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a meeting on rescue and relief work after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake ravaged southwestern Sichuan Province Monday afternoon.     Hu also conveyed his greetings to the government officials and people in the disaster-hit areas, the People's Liberation Army (PLA), armed police, militia, reservists, public security staff, medical personnel, journalists and all people making "selfless devotions" to the quake-devastated areas.     More than 200 rescuers from Japan, Russia, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Singapore are in Sichuan to help with the rescue and disaster relief work.     A 61-year-old woman was saved alive Saturday evening by Russian rescuers after being buried for up to 127 hours in the rubble, the first survivor found by foreign rescuers.     The earthquake, the worst in decades, had caused 28,881 deaths nationwide as of 2 p.m. Saturday. Many countries have offered help including making donations and sending rescue teams.     QUAKE RELIEF ATOP GOVERNMENT WORK AGENDA     In the meeting, Hu urged local governments at all levels and relevant central government departments to take quake relief as the most important and pressing issue in their work.     He called for unremitting efforts to search for and rescue the trapped people though more than five days had passed after the disaster.     "We should put people first and saving people's lives is still the top priority of the relief work," he said.     Troops, armed police, and public security personnel should reach villages and search every collapsed buildings to save the people, he said.     Hu also called for all-out efforts to save and cure injured survivors, urging to transfer them to hospitals with better conditions.     Hygiene measures in the quake-hit areas should be beefed up to prevent the spread of diseases, and more medical experts should be sent to these areas to help prevent and control possible epidemics, Hu said.     During the meeting, Hu expressed his concern for the people in the quake-devastated areas, calling for arrangements of supplies of daily necessities to meet people's demands.     Food, clothes, drinking water and temporary shelters must be ensured, he emphasized.     Hu also underscored social stability in quake hit areas, ordering officials to give considerate comfort and condolence to people to ensure a peaceful social environment.     "We must keep highly alert" against aftershocks and avoid further losses, he warned.     Hu also called for tightened monitoring and prevention measures on geological disasters such as landslides and mud-rock flows.     He said early planning is important for reconstruction as the country now faces a challenging task in this regard.     He also ordered early preparations and arrangements to deal with the issues of orphans, seniors and disabled.     The meeting was presided over by Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who urged implementation of the overall quake-relief strategies of the central government.

In the future, we will help them in return," the premier added.     "Trials and tribulations serve only to revitalize the nation," he wrote on the blackboard to encourage them.
