SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some San Diego fitness studios and hotels are getting creative by working together.F45 Training San Diego East Village and the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego are partnering to offer outdoor fitness classes this weekend.George Chmiel, the F45 studio owner, said that when they heard about the new public health orders to shut down more indoor spaces, they immediately looked for outdoor space.Meanwhile, the nearby Hard Rock Hotel San Diego has an 8,700 square foot rooftop terrace that's sitting empty. It's typically used for events and parties, but none are happening due to the pandemic. The hotel has allowed F45 to use the space without charge."Two industries that have been hurt by this current situation we're going through, are the hospitality and fitness industries," said Rana Kay, the director of communications at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego. "We feel the pain at the gyms when they were recently shut down once again.""I think it's a great collaboration of businesses that have just gotten kicked in the face to find a unique way to weather the storm and potentially grow through this," Chmiel said.Chmiel says the plan is to hold one class on Saturdays and Sundays, and two classes on the weekdays.Kay says it could also benefit their guests. They hope people staying at the hotel will eventually take part in the classes as an option because fitness areas in the hotel are currently closed.Hapa Yoga & Fitness in Mission Valley says they have also turned to hotels since their indoor studio space closed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University has instituted new protocols to keep the coronavirus from spreading on campus.Dr. Luke Wood, Vice President of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, said they hired security to patrol the campus from Thursday through Sunday after hours, document policy violations, and send reports to staff who handle disciplinary action."There are real consequences now of our COVID-19 policies, and that can range from a warning, to suspension to even in extreme cases, expulsion," Wood said.He said they also have a wellness ambassador program they hope to expand to 50 personnel, "so that when students come on campus physically they are being greeted and welcomed to the campus. They're reminded of our policies around wearing face-masks, around social distancing."Wood said he wants to make sure SDSU doesn't join the growing list of colleges with outbreaks."We're doing everything that's within our power to make sure that we don't follow in others' footsteps," he said. "It's demonstrating we take this very seriously."Only a third of students (about 2,600) are living on campus this year, according to Wood. In-person classes have been cut from thousands to 202. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Southcrest neighbors banned together to file a lawsuit against the City of San Diego, claiming a city park was not designed to properly drain and therefore floods the neighborhood each time it rains.Last December was the breaking point for neighbors near Southcrest Trails Park, at S. 37th Street and a dirt road behind houses situated on Beta Street. They say feet of water flooded into their homes."This actually becomes a sinkhole, this area," said Greg Montoya, who is leading the charge with his hefty binder full of decades of documentation of the problem. Montoya has pictures of his white pickup truck sunken rims-deep into his yard due to saturation.The lawsuit describes it as "a 66-acre, 1.2-mile corridor in the Southcrest neighborhood of San Diego to construct Highway 252, which would connect Interstate 805 and lnterstates 5 and 15."The project never materialized, Montoya says, because St. Jude, thinking of the school, put up a fight."So then the City of San Diego put dirt berms in to keep people from driving back here, to keep people from throwing trash back here, because it became a dump," Montoya said. The park took shape in 2003, according to the lawsuit.Montoya and other neighbors say there was not enough drainage put in, sending water running down the five-foot berm every time it rains.A storm in December 2018 left many stranded, including Ricky Vasquez, who was trying to pick up his one-year-old son."Other cars were stuck in the middle of the street because the water was so high," said Vasquez.Neighbor Pastor Nicolas Martinez said his home flooded, ultimately costing ,000.Montoya was fed up."San Diego's America's Finest City for some but not for all because I've got documentation for over 30 years for asking for help for this situation that they've created and I'm just ignored," said Montoya.He went to attorney Evan Walker, who said his team found one of the two storm drains at the park "is not connected to any sort of system despite the city's own plans to connect them to the system."Montoya hopes the lawsuit causes the city to step up.10News reached out to the City of San Diego who said they could not comment on ongoing litigation. 2211

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some places of worship around San Diego County appear to be planning to continue holding services on their property despite the state’s order regarding indoor operations.On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced pandemic-related restrictions for certain businesses and activities, and places of worship were included on California’s list.Via a Wednesday evening livestream, Kearny Mesa-based Awaken Church broadcasted their service in which there were people in attendance. On their website, Awaken Church promoted in-person women’s prayer meetings held at each of their campuses.ABC 10News asked church leaders to clarify the meeting, and an Awaken pastor said they were holding a prayer protest.At the church’s Balboa Avenue campus, a disclaimer is posted on doors that reads, in part: “By entering this building where COVID-19 virus may possibly exist, despite efforts and attempts at utilizing and employing CDC Public Health Guidelines, you take full responsibility for the decision to attend our services and activities.”A viewer brought a Facebook post by Lighthouse Baptist Church to ABC 10News’ attention. In the post, the Lemon Grove church says, in part: “We are aware of the current mandates of our Governor and County. But, by God’s grace will continue with their current schedule of live worship services on the property.”It’s unclear whether those services will be inside or outside.ABC 10News reached out to both churches for further comment, but neither have returned calls as of late Thursday morning.A woman who asked not to be identified told ABC 10News that her church also invited her back. She said she believes the places of worship that stay open are doing more harm than good.“They want things to be back to normal, everyone does. But they aren’t being realistic about it. I think they need to wait this out and be patient and slow the spread and it will be safer for parishioners, and the community and U.S. at large,” the woman said.As far as the enforcement of the state’s order, if the place of worship falls under San Diego County jurisdiction, it will be up to the sheriff’s department.If it’s within the city, it will be up to the police agency in that city to enforce. 2227
