SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new grant is helping a San Diego nonprofit expand its services during the coronavirus pandemic.Kitchens for Good recently got a ,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation and San Diego Gas & Electric.With the new money, Kitchens for Good is now cooking 7,000 meals each week, which local food banks give away to people in need.The meals are "heat and eat," said co-founder Aviva Paley. That helps people who can't cook or don't have a full kitchen get healthy meals."If you are a home-bound senior or someone who doesn't have a full kitchen or the capacity to cook for yourself, it can be really difficult to turn that bag of mixed match groceries into a healthy nutritious meal," said Paley.Before the pandemic, Kitchens for Good made 2,000 meals per week. The program provided job and skills training to people with troubled past, many of whom had been in prison or experienced homelessness.RELATED: San Diego program transforming lives in the kitchenThe grant is helping Kitchens for Good rehire some of their graduates who had lost jobs during the pandemic."Many of our apprentices have been on that other end of the food line; hungry, hopeless and homeless," said Paley. "This gives them an opportunity to really support someone. And they know how much food can mean to someone who's really struggling."The grant will allow Kitchens for Good to make an additional 100,000 by the end of 2020. Duncan Hunter’s attorney to the United States Deputy Attorney General discussed possible evidence of extramarital infidelity and excessive drinking.On August 6, Hunter attorney Gregory A. Vega wrote to Rod Rosenstein at the Department of Justice requesting the postponement of this week's campaign fund misuse indictment, and addressed “an overly aggressive prosecution intent on criminalizing content that is civil in nature”.“While there may be evidence of infidelity, irresponsibility, or alcohol dependence, once properly understood, the underlying facts do not equate to criminal activity; these allegations are, however, intended to embarrass and humiliate the Congressman shortly before a crucial election, and also to alienate him from his wife, the only other person under investigation and his intended co-defendant,” wrote Vega.Prosecutors allege the Hunters used more than 0,000 in campaign funds to support a lavish lifestyle and reported the purchases as campaign expenses.The affidavit detailed money spent on hotel rooms for different individuals and various social outings, including one involving 30 shots of tequila. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A La Jolla hardware store is being forced to remove their popcorn machine they say was used to give the buttery treat to customers for free over the last 25 years.According to a food inspection report, the Meanley and Son Hardware on the 7700 block of Girard was investigated for serving popcorn without a permit."Everybody has had fun with this until now, but we have to obey the law," said co-owner Bob Meanley.One of the store's owners says the inspection happened after someone complained.A customer reportedly saw another person reach into the popcorn machine barehanded."I’m sorry we can’t continue with the popcorn, but we’ll do it with everything else," added Meanley.In the report, the inspector said the small Gold Medal brand popcorn maker was seen in use and with “popped popcorn prepared.”The report forces the hardware store to stop making popcorn and to remove the popcorn machine from the building.If the shop wants to give away popcorn, according to the health department, they’ll have to go through the permitting process. A process which will also legally require that the store install three compartment sinks. The store says staff regularly cleaned the machine and refilled it with popcorn throughout the day for customers to enjoy.The hardware shop has an extensive history in La Jolla. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report is looking into why there is a shortage of homes for sale around the country. According to the report by NerdWallet, in October of 2017, the US had a 3.9-month supply of existing homes for resale, meaning at that pace, it would have taken 3.9 months to sell all the homes on the market. According to NerdWallet, a supply under six months places home buyers at a disadvantage. The report identifies six reasons why the housing supply is so low. 1. Boomers aren’t movingOver three-fourths of baby boomers own their own homes, according to the report, meaning millennials don’t have enough homes available to buy. The report also found that rising home prices force baby boomers to stay put because they don’t have the cash to downsize. RELATED: California gas tax set to increase July 12. Landlords won’t sellNerdWallet says millions of single-family homes were converted to rentals after the foreclosure crisis. In 2017, renters made up 36 percent of households. A greater demand for homes coupled with less supply means values rise while rents are rising faster than home prices. 3. Low mortgage rates The report points out that interest rates on outstanding mortgages averaged about 3.8 percent over the last three years. As mortgage rates rise, fewer people are interested in selling and getting into new mortgages. 4. Entry-level homes ignored by buildersIn the first nine months of 2017, nearly 500,000 newly-built homes were sold of which 55 percent sold for 0,000 or more. Regulations add costThe report points out the homebuilders say environmental protection, infrastructure fees and rules that specify lot sizes all add tens of thousands of dollars to the cost of building every single home. Owners want a restricted supplyFinally, the report found that local zoning and land-use regulations are enacted by officials elected by the people. The report says those officials are only responding to constituents who want a limit on the number of homes that can be built in a neighborhood. Elected officials can also set a minimum square footage for homes, further limiting supply. “There are regulations that are more about the neighbors’ sensibilities than they are about the safety of the people living in the houses,” says Miriam Axel-Lute, associate director of the National Housing Institute. “It’s neighbors who want their property values to go up, in most cases, who are insistent upon some excess safety design standards or minimum lot sizes or other things,” Lute says. “They either want their property values to go up or they don’t want, quote, ‘the wrong sort of people’ in their neighborhoods. This is the pressure behind a lot of the most damaging regulations out there.” 3097
