FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WCPO) -- A firefighter in Franklin Township, Ohio who posted a racial slur on his Facebook page saying he'd save a dog over a black person has resigned, according to The Journal-News.Tyler Roysdon submitted his resignation late Monday night, township officials told the newspaper, after his racially charged comment got him suspended on Sept. 12.Roysdon’s since-deleted Facebook post has made national news. He purportedly stated that, given the choice, he would save a dog before a black person -- posting “one dog is worth a million” and then using the N-word.Before his resignation, Middletown NAACP chapter president Dora Bronston called for Roysdon to be fired, saying a firefighter's job is "to be there for every person that calls on your help.""This person is 20 years old - apparently not mature enough to be a firefighter," Bronston said. "We trust those people with our lives to protect us, to keep us safe our families safe, and we don't want them to put us in harm's way."Without authority to fire Roysdon, Township Fire Chief Steve Bishop had placed Roysdon on indefinite suspension pending a disciplinary hearing. Township trustees had scheduled a disciplinary hearing for Roysdon for Sept. 27. 1297

Five days after the tragic bus crash in Saskatchewan, Canada involving a junior hockey team's bus, the team's trainer, Dayna Brons, died on Wednesday as result of her injuries. Brons, 25, became the 16th confirmed fatality from Friday's bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos. "Dayna will be forever remembered for her joyful smile, and her passion and love of sport," her family said in a statement.The team was traveling from Humboldt to its playoff game in Nipawin, Saskatchewan when a semi-trailer plowed into the bus, which carried 29 people. TSN reported that as of Wednesday, 10 people remain hospitalized from last week's crash.The Broncos play in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, which is made up of players aged 16 to 21, who compete at junior hockey's second-highest level. Also on Wednesday, the league opted to continue with its playoffs. Nipawin, which held a 3-1 series lead over Humboldt, will advance to the league finals to take on Estevan. The plan to move forward with the playoffs was approved by representatives from the league's 12 teams, including Humboldt.  1143

First lady Melania Trump's plane was forced to return to Joint Base Andrews Wednesday after a "mechanical issue" that led to smoke in the cabin.According to the press pool traveling with Trump, about 10 minutes after the plane took off, reporters could see a thin haze of smoke and the smell of something burning. Former Gov. Deval Patrick has decided not to run for president and plans to announce his decision soon, a source close to the Massachusetts Democrat tells CNN.Patrick, a two-term governor and close ally to former President Barack Obama, had been considering a 2020 run after entering the private sector and taking a job at Bain Capital in 2015. He had upped his political involvement ahead of the 2018 midterms -- endorsing candidates in South Carolina, Texas, New Jersey and a handful of other states -- leading many to believe he was going to jump into the race.Patrick, despite the speculation that he was going to run, had repeatedly acknowledged the enormity of the decision."It's on my radar screen," Patrick told a public radio station in Kansas City during the midterms, adding that "it's a huge decision.""I am trying to think through 2020," Patrick said. "And that's a decision I'm trying to think through from a personal and family point of view."Patrick also expressed concerns about standing out in what is expected to be a wide-open Democratic field."It's hard to see how you even get noticed in such a big, broad field without being shrill, sensational or a celebrity," Patrick told David Axelrod, a former top Obama adviser, in September.
