SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Holiday shopping season has officially kicked off with Black Friday and Small-Business Saturday. But with Toys R Us no longer in the picture, retailers are finding unique ways to cash in on the billion-dollar industry. Kids will always be drawn to play and make-believe. But for parents, it’s about helping Santa get the deals.“He loves to jump. He loves to run," Chedna Patin said. "So I think this will be a great play station for my baby,” she said while pointing at a piano toy.Patin said this year, she and her husband are buying their son’s holiday toys at a big box store.“Sam’s Club is majorly for groceries, buying bulk. But now as they are increasing their toy collection, I think for parents, it’s a good thing," Patin said. In fact, her one-year-old son Viann’s entire nursery came out of a Toys R Us catalog. But since the toy giant filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, she had to look elsewhere.Since 1948, Toys R Us has dominated the toy market-- last year claiming almost 5% of the .4 billion industry.  Now that they are gone, retailers like Sam's Club saw an opportunity.“We have added about 70 new toys this holiday season," Sam's Club member experience manager, Victor Aguilar said. “We have way more toys than before, that way [parents are] not running around everywhere trying to get their toys. So they can do a one-stop-shop here, buy their food, clothes, toys. They get everything.”Like their “try then buy” food model, Sam's Club is offering toy demonstrations for the first time, ever."We want kids to interact with them, and ask Santa for that gift," Aguilar said. "Or so parents can make sure if the product meets their children's needs."Demonstrations are a strategy to beat out online stores, which now amount to 13% of the holiday retail market.Small, independent toy stores, on the other hand, have another strategy. Chika Sasaki owns Gunnzo, a Japanese toy store in Old Town. Instead of offering the same toys as everyone else, she seeks specialty items.“We always try to have some niche stuff that Toys R Us doesn’t have or a bigger toy store, so it didn’t really affect us," Sasaki said. Whatever the strategy, one thing is for sure. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Two years ago the Norton Sound was docked in San Diego Bay and burned for several days. Now, San Diego is hiring an outside consultant to look into the cargo fire. San Diego Fire gave 10News a statement Friday. They didn’t offer specifics about what the consultant might recommend, but say the focus is to determine if any additional equipment or training is needed when dealing with emergencies on the bay. Back in 2017, Harbor Police told 10News, “It was to my understanding that the furthest a firefighter made it was 6 feet before they started getting pushed about the fire.” Looking back, even businesses remember how horrible the smoke was over the days the fire burned, “People stopped sitting outside and employees complained about it affecting their health.” says Edgewater Grill assistant manager, Sergio Velasco. While the smoke bellowed out of the ship for nearly a week, no one was injured and the fire stayed contained and didn’t spread to any other structures. San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - The PGA Tour rolled into La Jolla Monday to prepare for this week's Farmers Insurance Open. Players will have to quickly adjust to the first major renovation at the famed South Course in more than a decade."I can't wait to see them play it and see what their scores are and try to hear some of their comments," Scott Bentley, who helps oversee the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Golf Division, said while giving 10News a tour of the changes Monday ahead of the tournment.Respected course designer Rees Jones, who helmed the last major renovation to Torrey Pines in 2001, examined advanced analytical data from the 2019 tournament, studying where the pros are hitting their shots. Jones used that information to recommend changes, moving several bunkers to locations that will force players to make a difficult strategic decision on how to approach the hole. San Diego Democratic delegate Jess Durfee has attended the last four of his party's conventions to select the presidential nominee.Some days, he spends more than 15 hours attending meetings, luncheons and waiting for major speeches on the floor."There is nothing like attending a convention," he says.There is also nothing like the Democratic National Convention for 2020, which begins Monday. It's going all virtual in the midst of the Coronavirus outbreak. It starts with a keynote speech from Sen. Bernie Sanders, and will conclude Thursday when Joe Biden officially accepts the presidential nomination. Durfee used to attend with his San Diego counterparts. This year he was supposed to go to the convention in Milwaukee. Instead, he'll be joining from his home office in University Heights. "We would normally be seeing one another, even having breakfast together... We'd grab a couple of tables, and say 'these are San Diego tables, get away,'" he said, jokingly.The same virtual format will apply for the Republican National Convention, happening next week. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, says these conventions are essentially one long political ad. The business of the party is not the priority - it's getting voters excited for November."The big question here is whether America will want to watch something that looks like the Zoom meetings many of us have been in all day," he said. But Kousser said there is intense political interest that could push up viewership. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— In the wake of two serious e-scooter accidents over the weekend, San Diego city leaders are working to update e-scooter regulations. While the scooters are off-limits on all city sidewalks, they are allowed on beach boardwalks. While some believe they are instrumental in freeing up car traffic and parking, others believe scooters just bring the congestion straight onto the boardwalks.Chase McKenna enjoys riding e-scooters at Pacific Beach. He says it is the best way to enjoy the boardwalk."Cruise around the strip right here and that's fun,” McKenna said. “They're convenient because down here, they're everywhere."But what is fun and convenient for McKenna, is a total nightmare for Paul Thackery."PB's great. The scooters are out of control,” Thackery said. He says some areas along the boardwalk are beginning to look like a scooter graveyard. He has also been hit by several intoxicated scooterists in the last several months. "I can't stand them. I ride my bike down here every day, and scooters are in the way, it's dangerous,” Thackery said. “I think they should get rid of them all together. "This weekend alone, at least two e-scooterists in San Diego were sent to the hospital for severe injuries. San Diego Police said a 39-year-old man fell off a scooter just before 10 pm Saturday in Mission Beach. He suffered life-threatening head injuries. Then at 12:30 am Sunday, just a mile away, a 62-year-old man lost control of his scooter, and crashed into a sidewalk. He suffered a neck fracture and facial abrasions.Since February 2018, two people in San Diego County have even died in scooter crashes. The city of San Diego is now defending against four e-scooter lawsuits that claim the city needed to enforce stronger regulations to prevent collisions and accidents.But in a crowded place like a boardwalk, McKenna says scooters are not the only issue."A person on their bicycle can be just as inconsiderate,” McKenna said. That is why McKenna says it is vital that each rider regulates themselves. We met Tracy Grimmett, a visitor from Modesto, doing a few practice laps before taking off for the first time. “Yes, without running into all the people around here. Yes, trying!” she laughed. She hopes to have fun while being considerate, as they share the busy boardwalk with thousands of weekenders."Be courteous around people, go slow,” McKenna said. “If there's a lot of people, you have to slow down, and you have to give other people the right of way."The city of San Diego is now considering making companies install “geo-fencing” on the scooters. That would automatically slow down the maximum speed of the scooters to 8mph in designated zones, including Mission Beach and Pacific Beach boardwalks. 2750
