SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman who caught herself on fire in her kitchen and her husband were burned when he rushed in to help his wife inside their home in the Bay Terraces neighborhood Sunday, fire officials said.The stove fire inside a home on the 7500 block of Careybrook Lane ignited about 3 p.m. Sunday, fire officials said.The husband used whatever he could find in order to help his wife, San Diego Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Raines said."Eventually, there was water used from a bathroom," San Diego police Lt. Mike Ramsay told the station. "But due to whatever was used (by the husband) part of the flash, part of the fire, his clothing caught on fire."The husband and wife were taken to the UCSD hospital burn center. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - No charges were filed Wednesday against a 19-year-old man arrested along with three teenage girls for allegedly attacking and severely beating a 56-year-old man near Petco Park.The investigation is continuing into the case against 19-year-old Dominick Wells in connection with the attack that left Edward Leon Starland on life support, said Tanya Sierra, a spokeswoman for the District Attorney's Office.Three girls, ages 14, 15 and 17, also were arrested on suspicion of felony battery, said San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs. One of the girls had a detention hearing at Juvenile Court Wednesday.Starland was attacked about 2:10 p.m. last Sunday near the pedestrian bridge adjacent to Petco Park, Dobbs said.Police and paramedics found the victim unresponsive.Investigators determined the victim got into an argument with a group of teenagers and was knocked to the ground, then beaten, the lieutenant said.When witnesses started yelling at the attackers to stop, they fled east on Imperial Avenue, he said.Wells was arrested about 3:15 a.m. the next morning. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man was sentenced Friday to more than 11 years in federal custody for distributing child pornography.Prosecutors say Christopher Duane Wade, 41, admitted last year to sending child porn to others and engaging in a sexually explicit conversation with an undercover agent posing as a teenage girl.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Wade started talking with an undercover Homeland Security Investigations agent in April 2019, thinking she was a 13-year-old girl. They arranged to meet following "more than a week of sexually explicit chats," at which point Wade was arrested.Agents seized his cell phone, which contained pornography depicting "the abuse of very young children," as well as discussions with other people in which he encouraged them "to sexually abuse minors to whom they had access, and to document such abuse for purposes of distributing it to others."Following his 135-month federal prison term, Wade will be on supervised release for 10 years, during which he will be prohibited from having contact with minors, among other conditions, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office."One of our most important roles as prosecutors is to protect our nation's vulnerable children," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "In addition to personally engaging in despicable conduct, this defendant worked to recruit others to follow in his footsteps. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A towering palm tree and the tree trimmer strapped to it came toppling down inside the lobby area at a University City-area hotel Thursday. The tree was being cut down at Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego-La Jolla, 4550 La Jolla Village Drive, when it struck a person shortly before 11 a.m., according to police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. San Diego Police told 10News the injured man was a tree trimmer. Medics took the victim, to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Joe Jaha, a supervisor at Arbor West Tree Surgeons, says a 3-man crew was at the hotel to take down three large palms in the lobby. He says the tree trimmer was 30 feet up the final, 40-foot palm. He had taken off the top and was trying to bring it down when the tree uprooted, with the tree and tree trimmer crashing to the ground. The tree trimmer, a man in his 30s, suffered a broken leg and arm."It had highly unusual, shallow roots, which we couldn't detect until it was too late.
