(KGTV) — One man was shot and injured while using an East County ATM machine during an attempted robbery Wednesday.The man had just finished using an ATM machine at the Union Bank location at 3285 Lemon Grove Ave. when an unidentified suspect approached and tried to rob him just after 12 p.m., according to San Diego County Sheriff's Department.During the robbery, the man, described as a black man in his 40s, was shot in the leg. His condition was not immediately known. It's not clear how much was stolen from the man.The suspect was not immediately identified or reported in custody. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A developer in La Mesa says multi-generational homes could be the key to helping solve San Diego's housing crisis.The Phair Company has plans to build 30 such homes on a 10-acre patch of land near Eastridge Drive. The development is called "La Mesa Summit Estates."The homes will feature an extra master-suite, with a bathroom, kitchenette and separate entry. Families with aging parents or adult children who live at home can use that suite to give them independence, while still keeping the family together."We heard from the community that they wanted to have this," says Austin Dias, one of the partners in the company.The Phair Company did four community meetings to help plan the development. The idea for multi-generational homes came from people who attended. They also heard that people wanted one-story homes to avoid going up and down stairs.After the meetings, the company changed their plans, downsizing the community from 39 to 30 homes and adjusting the floor plans. Now, the development will have 22 single story homes, and eight two-story homes. They range from 2,300 to 3,000 square feet."I love it," says Dr. Karen Childress-Evans, who lives across the street from the land. "It's very conscientious to how society is growing right now. Kids are moving back home, we're taking care of our parents. This is a safe alternative to sending them off someplace else."The company also thinks the cost savings will help in today's housing market."This is just part of what needs to happen in San Diego," says Dias. "It just makes sense to keep families together. "The company has an interest list of around 80 potential buyers. They expect it to grow as word gets out about the project.Dias told 10News he's heard of other companies doing a few multi-generational houses in larger developments, but this is the only one he knows of where every home is built with the extra suite.The project still needs approval from the La Mesa Planning Commission, and then the City Council. Dias says he's hopeful that will happen this summer, so they can break ground and start construction in the fall. He's hopeful that the homes will be ready by this time next year. LAKE HUGHES (CNS) - A fire burning near the Lake Hughes area was 12% contained but experienced a "flare up" due to extreme heat Friday afternoon after already scorching 11,637 acres, destroying five structures and threatening more over the last three days."There is a bit of a flare up this afternoon, but we don't really have a ton of information of where that is yet because it's going on right now," a U.S. Forest Service official told City News Service late Friday afternoon.Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday, additional evacuations were ordered for the Fairmont area east of Lancaster, where residents were told to evacuate from north of Avenue D/Highway 138, south of Avenue A, west of 150th Street West and east of 200th Street West, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Palmdale Station."Fire will continue to grow and threaten the surrounding communities of Lake Hughes, Leona Valley, Lake Elizabeth, Pine Canyon, Quail Lake, Three Points, Historic Ridge Route and Inventoried Roadless Areas, fire officials said during a late-morning update Friday. "Spotting and aggressive fire behavior will continue."Fanning the flames is this weekend's heat wave, with firefighters braced for dangerously hot weather that will make battling the fire more difficult.The focus for crews on Friday was "fire suppression, air operations, evacuations as needed and structure defense operations ... line construction where possible," officials said.No injuries have been reported, but at least five structures have been destroyed and further damage assessments were being conducted.The fire was first reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to the U. People on social media have called the costume racist, disgusting and offensive.In a video posted to Facebook by LakewoodAlive that has since been removed, the unidentified man was seen wearing blackface makeup while dressed in Woods’ trademark red polo shirt and Nike hat. Leaders of a program for at risk youth in Southern California are worried as the teens who need the most help may not be getting the opportunities they need because of the pandemic.Student Leslie Damien has very specific aspirations.“I want to be a doctor, actually -- I hope to be getting into autopsies,” Damien said.But that wasn't the case two years ago when she was living an entirely different lifestyle.“I was on probation for skipping school, for being absent all the time, for smoking and doing drugs. I was doing really bad during this time,” Damien said.Damien said it was her probation officer who made her realize that her life was spiraling downward. The two sat down and had a heart-to-heart conversation.“’Leslie, you are messing up your life,” Damien said, recalling her conversation. “’You have so much to look forward to, you can either go to Sunburst or mess up your life and you’re not going to get anywhere.”She signed up and checked herself in for change.“What made me want to make the change was seeing my grandmother cry,” Damien said. “I saw her cry she said she was disappointed and thought I was going to be something in the world and she though my life was going to go completely bad.”“We take students who are struggling for whatever reason, drugs, alcohol family issues, bad relationships and we bring them into a safe environment built around the military model of structure and discipline and we get them away from all those distractions,” said Sgt. Ryan Salvoni, the admissions coordinator for Sunburst Youth Academy in Los Alamitos, California. It's a quas-imilitary, residential youth program run by the National Guard and Orange County Department of Education.“Sunburst is not a placement facility, it’s not a bootcamp for bad kids, parents can’t force their students to attend,” Salvoni said. It’s a scholarship that you have to apply for and earn. You have to have an actual desire for change and make a commitment to the process in order for our program to have significant change in their life.”The program is free, and available to any teen in six Southern California counties. There are 40 similar programs like this one across the country. It’s 22 weeks long, and Salvoni says, there are typically more applicants than scholarships. There's no turning back. No quitting.“We make it harder for a student to quit and go home than it is to get back in and continue through that moment of weakness,” Salvoni said. “We’re trying to develop that sense of resiliency when they’re with us so they can push through moments of wanting to quit or give up.”Salvoni is worried about the kids he's not able to reach. Like every other aspect of our society, the pandemic has changed the way he does outreach.“Any empty scholarship that goes unfulfilled is a lost opportunity for a student to change their life,” Salvoni said.And that, Damien said, is something she's proof of.“I would be probably on the streets, smoking weed, not graduating high school, doing the same things I was doing before, not in a good place, nowhere near where I am now,” Damien said.After graduating, she became valedictorian, graduating with a 4.5 GPA, and is well on her way to become a doctor.“It's an extraordinary opportunity for those students who don’t have a future or who think that there’s nothing that’s going to go on with their life it’s a huge opportunity to start your future to give you a second opportunity to be something great or be something in the world,” Damien said.All that is required for applicants is an ID and be free of serious legal troubles. 3586
