SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Across San Diego County, cities will soon raise and illuminate that all-important sign of Christmas.Tree lighting ceremonies kick off this month, with several planned for residents no matter where in the county they live. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man whose bike was stolen, decided to track the thief himself. But instead of turning him in, he turned the situation into something positive. Rob Greenfield never thought he'd see his bamboo bike again. “I didn’t lock it because I was sitting 20 feet from it and then I heard a noise and I looked back and saw the guy speeding off into the night with it.” When he found the thief, he didn't turn him in. He pulled him in for a hug, forgave him and took his bike back.  “It’s one of a kind bamboo bike but really what makes it special is that I’ve biked across the United States on it doing good deeds," he said. "So I’ve traveled thousands of miles across the country.” The theft made him want to do more good deeds, right here in San Diego. “I decided that rather than turning that into a really negative situation I would turn it into a positive situation," he said. "Knowing the feeling of having a bike stolen I decided I wanted to give bikes to kids who have had their bikes stolen and can’t afford a new one.” Greenfield started a GoFundMe to raise money for bikes. Bikes that he would then donate to the Boys and Girls Club - to kids whose bikes were stolen. He says it's a lesson in kindness that he hopes the thief who took his bike, and the kids who were given bikes, will pass on.“I can crowd out the bad with lots of good. So one bike stolen so I can give away 10 bikes, he said. "In that way it just wipes that bad deed out.”Rob gave away 10 bikes Tuesday and says that there is enough left for him to do it again.  1614

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Ocean Beach woman was alarmed by a flier taped to her door saying "the antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him." Holly Raines said her 7-year-old son found the flier taped on their front door. “I started reading the letter but I was like half asleep so I started panicking a little bit because it just seemed very threatening and very intense,” Raines said. Several other neighbors say they got one too. The letter stated it was from New Life Christian Chapel, which is a few blocks away from where Raines lives in Ocean Beach. “It was very damning and then it has like a phrase that says ‘The antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him, there is no middle ground,’” she said. Raines said the flier quotes several Bible verses but found them far from comforting. “The words just aren’t very friendly, they talk about slaying lambs and antichrist and unrighteousness,” Raines said. It ended by inviting her to a home Bible study but she can't help but feel like the church crossed a line. “We have a lot of friends that go to church around here and a lot of the community churches here are awesome, they do great things,” Raines said. “The idea of taping anything on somebody’s door is a lot and this is a full document of typing. I mean if anyone wrote me a letter like that I would think it was an angry letter.”10News reached out to New Life Christian Chapel, and Pastor Thomas J. McNearny told 10News in an e-mail:"My purpose in distributing the flyers was simply to get the Word of God out to the public. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An eventual return to outdoor dining for some North Park restaurants may not be an option due to a City of San Diego project.Right now, some businesses on 30th Street have left their outdoor dining structures just as they were before the latest stay-at-home order. However, concerns have been raised as the city’s pipeline replacement project, which includes a bike lane expansion, moves into its final stages.In a virtual meeting, city officials presented a plan to the North Park Main Street Business board of directors, informing business owners of what will be required of them as part of this construction. This will include restriping the bike lanes in their section and putting signage up.Several area business owners, like David Gamboa, were not happy to hear the plans. Business owners believe the project will cost them their parklets and outdoor dining spaces.“Not only are businesses scratching for every penny they can right now. Now we’re going to ask them to take their staff, time, and take whatever little money they have and stripe the street themselves. It seems crazy to me. It’s a big ask,” Gamboa said.The business owners are asking the city to delay the striping of the bike lanes until businesses can fully reopen.Typically, the city would require businesses to hire an engineer who would design a traffic plan. 1363

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After nearly two decades of delays and setbacks, San Ysidro community members celebrated the completion of a million major road reconstruction project Monday.For years the half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road in between San Ysidro High and San Ysidro Middle Schools lacked many safety features to protect the students who walk to and from school.An unfinished dirt path was used as a sidewalk with no fence to keep students away from oncoming vehicle traffic, no street lights or proper signage and no barriers to keep pedestrians from slipping down a steep canyon.After three years, the stretch of road now includes the safety features the community had been asking for for years. The roadway was widened and realigned, sidewalks and bike lanes were added, there's now a retaining wall, signage and lighting.The City of San Diego says the project took so long to complete after the initial groundbreaking because of the rough terrain crews had to work through.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced reforms to overhaul the City’s infrastructure program back in 2015. He says that increased funding each year and helped speed up high priority projects, like the one on Old Otay Mesa Road. This project was one of more than 60 neighborhood projects that were fully funded after Faulconer’s reforms went into effect."Parents have a peace of mind knowing that their kids have a safe path to and from school," said Faulconer at a news conference Monday.The half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road, which was closed off to traffic for several years, officially reopened on Monday. 1612
