BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — A large area of Boulder County, including the towns of Jamestown and Ward, are under a mandatory evacuation order after two new wildfires sparked over the weekend.The 8,788-acre Calwood Fire started Saturday and is burning near the Cal-Wood Education Center in the Jamestown area. Officials Sunday night confirmed that 26 homes were lost to the fire, so far, mostly on the eastern side of the fire along Mountain Ridge Drive and Foothills Ranch Drive. No injuries were reported.The Calwood Fire was about 15% contained as of Sunday night. The most concerning area of the fire was the northern ridge of the fire area, due to the steep, rocky terrain and dry fuels, officials said.On Sunday, a new wildfire, dubbed the Lefthand Canyon Fire, started in the 14000 block of Lefthand Canyon Drive near the town of Ward. It has charred 312 acres as of Sunday night. Crews were still battling the fire Sunday but had contained the blaze north of Lefthand Canyon Drive.Smoke from both fires can be seen throughout most of Boulder and the surrounding area.The Boulder County fires prompted authorities to send out pre-evacuation notices to thousands of residents nearby, including people in the town of Lyons. In the Calwood Fire, there are 1,600 homes and 2,600 structures total in the evacuation area, and around 3,000 people impacted.Several roads are closed, including County Road 87, and officials evacuated Hall Ranch and Heil Valley trails.The map below shows the areas under an evacuation or pre-evacuation order:There is an evacuation check-in point for the Calwood Fire set up at 3460 N. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The entire force of the Buffalo Police Emergency Response Team has resigned as of Friday afternoon in support of the two officers who were suspended without pay following an incident in Niagara Square on Thursday.The 57 officers have not resigned from the department and will keep their jobs. They have only resigned from their roles on the emergency response team.The Niagra Square incident involved a 75-year-old man, Martin Gugino, being shoved by officers. We used to call it the beach,” Robert Benham said of George Washington Carver Park in Bartow County, Georgia. “It was a place where people of color could feel free.”Free, however, during a time of segregation. Robert Benham’s father was the superintendent at George Washington Carver Park, Georgia’s first state park for African Americans.“It’s where my mom and dad were in business and they were people who really believed in the American dream,” Benham said.Benham said he learned valuable life lessons while water skiing the section of Lake Allatoona in Acworth, Georgia.“Being the smallest person, I was always atop of the pyramid,” he said. “The lesson I learned then was that sometimes you can do things perfectly and still fail at it.”Benham says those experiences helped him become the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court of Georgia.There was one incident, however, that impacted his life more than others: when he was denied using the front door at the park’s main office.“My dad stepped up and said, ‘this is my son, he can go in anybody’s front door and if you ever step in his way that will be the last step you make,’” Benham said.That decision would cost Benham’s father his job, but would prove to be a turning point in both of their lives.“He said, ‘there’s some things you have to do be a man,’” Benham said of his father. “’And if you can’t stand up for your children, what can you stand up for?’”While Benham describes the waters at George Washington Carver Park as almost spiritual. He says they also had a huge impact physically. During his the Benham family’s time there, this section of the lake was the only lake in northwest Georgia where African Americans were allowed to swim.“For some people this was the first time they had an opportunity to swim because they couldn’t swim in the various facilities in town,” Benham said.In an area where Confederate flags still fly today, George Washington Carver Park is now open to everyone while Benham is now retired as a judge.Looking back on the past, he believes the recreation area has helped with the future of race relations.“If they work on the things that they have in common than the things that separate them will be less significant,” Benham said. 2483

Beginning in late October, Marriott International Inc., says they will lay off over 600 employees at its headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland.In an email to E.W. Scripps, a spokesman for the hotel chain said 673 employees would be laid off.The spokesman added that employees that were furloughed would be back at the end of September.In 2018, Marriott began construction on its new headquarters and hoped to relocate by early 2022, the company said in a press release.The company currently has over 3,500 employees working at its headquarters.According to the Baltimore Sun, the old building will be turned into a senior living center after Erickson Living bought it. 673
