SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - The office of District Attorney Summer Stephan will soon have a new tool to better document injuries to victims of domestic violence. Her office announced on Tuesday, May 7 that 35 cameras will be purchased to aid in investigations, thanks to a ,000 grant from a California Office of Emergency Services.According to Stephan, these cameras can produce high-quality photos, which will then assist how evidence is presented in court. "These cameras can help us preserve and document evidence -- including evidence of strangulation -- which is predictive of homicide, and allows us to move forward with prosecutions and fight this persistent crime in San Diego County," said Stephan.According to a recent crime report from the San Diego Association of Governments, in 2017 there were more than 17,000 domestic violence incidents reported in San Diego County. Stephan said there has been a 20% increase in the number of domestic violence cases submitted to the District Attorney's Office over the last five years. Plus, the District Attorney's Family Protection Division has 21 pending murder cases. 11 of those cases involve the murder of an intimate partner. In addition to the new cameras, Stephan's office is currently working on nine other initiatives to bring awareness to and combat domestic violence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Clairemont neighborhood woke up Thursday to a police raid, one week after surveillance video captured a gun battle in the exact same area. A damaged front door was left behind after a police action early in the morning. Just before 7 a.m., a surveillance camera captured officers arriving on Batista Street. They line up in front of a two-story home, before executing a search warrant there."So unusual. Don't remember anything like this in recent memory," said Gail Martin, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 30 years. For neighbors, the bizarre events began last Friday. Doorbell video shows a speeding black truck turning onto a street past a sedan, which then begins to move. In the next video, the truck is stopped on the street. Not far away, someone emerges from the passenger side of the car and starts firing a handgun. After about six shots are exchanged. The car then backs up and peels out. Another surveillance camera shows the truck racing out of the area.Evidence markers revealed a scene resembling the Wild West. Did other clues lead to the nearby home? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A family of five was displaced after a fire erupted in their City Heights kitchen Tuesday.The fire began in the kitchen of a home in the 3700 block of 41st St. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Juan Flores, the fire appeared to begin accidentally in the cooking area as food was being prepared.Six units responded, keeping the fire isolated to the kitchen of the residence, Flores added.The family, two adults and three children, were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is currently helping them.No other units on the property were damaged. 576

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 40-year-old man was assaulted and nearly kidnapped during a violent home invasion overnight in South Park.The victim and his girlfriend were asleep in their home when three armed suspects forced their way into the home at about 2:30 a.m., according to San Diego Police. The group demanded the victim's car keys, but he refused to give them the keys. The group struggled with the victim and assaulted him, before taking several electronics and attempting to kidnap the man, police say.The victim continued to resist and was able to escape the group and call police. The suspects then fled the scene.Police described the suspects as three Hispanic males, all wearing dark clothing, gloves, and partially covering their head and faces. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of San Diego Star Wars cosplayers are committed to charity work, not galactic control.Dressed as the "bad guys" of the Star Wars universe, the Imperial Sands Garrison can be found visiting children in the hospitals or supporting fundraisers. The group tries to attend more than 150 events a year."There's nothing better than going up and getting a high-five from the kids," says local commading officer Todd Mullen.Though over 100 strong, the Imperial Sands Garrison is only part of a much larger network. The 501st Legion spans worldwide with over 13,000 members. It has united Star Wars fans since 1997. 640
