TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Billionaire Mike Bloomberg is helping Florida felons pay their debts so they can vote in the presidential election. The former Democratic presidential candidate is taking action days after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis won a court victory to keep felons who served their time from voting until they’ve also paid off fines, restitution and court fees. Bloomberg is part of an effort that has raised more than million dollars to help these felons vote in the presidential election. That’s in addition to 0 million he has pledged to help Joe Biden win Florida.“The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy and no American should be denied that right. Working together with the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, we are determined to end disenfranchisement and the discrimination that has always driven it,” Bloomberg said in a written statement.A federal appellate court ruled on Sept. 11 that in addition to serving their sentences, Florida felons must pay all fines, restitution and legal fees before they can regain their right to vote. Under Amendment 4, which Florida voters passed overwhelmingly in 2018, felons who have completed their sentences would have voting rights restored. Republican lawmakers then moved to define what it means to complete a sentence. In addition to prison time served, lawmakers directed that all legal financial obligations, including unpaid fines and restitution, would also have to be settled before a felon could be eligible to vote. The Florida Rights Restitution Coalition had raised about million before Bloomberg made calls to raise almost million more, according to Bloomberg staffers. The case could have broad implications for the November elections. Florida has 29 electoral college votes that are crucial to President Donald Trump’s hopes of staying in the White House. 1861

Texas kicked off early voting Tuesday. People stood in long lines, voting in ways they've never done before. Some lined up before daylight on sidewalks outside major sports arenas to allow for more physical distancing.Early voting started Monday in Georgia and nearly 127,000 people cast their ballot, a first day record for the state.“There were hours-long wait times in some locations and glitches that added to the challenges,” said Mike Lydon, a principal at Street Plans. “Voting rights and having access to a safe and convenient polling location is going to really drive participation.”Street Plans is an urban planning and consulting firm that deals with transportation. They got a grant over the summer to put together a physical design plan for cities to best cope with social distancing, capacity restrictions and high voter turnout.“How you can make use of streets and public spaces to alleviate some of those issues and of course add some comfort elements like tents, seats, sanitation stations periodically throughout the queue,” said Lydon. The plans cover all types of polling locations, and how to properly do drive-up, curbside, outdoor and indoor voting. There are many potential problems for election officials when situations can change quickly.“COVID being this unknown variable, you could have a spike in the next three weeks at a certain location and that might totally change what was planned for in person indoor voting to go outdoors,” said Lydon.Street Plans is also offering free consulting assistance to cities. The plans are also free to download on their website StreetPlans.com. 1616

TAMPA, Fla. — George Streets, Jr., is just 10-years-old and he’s somewhat of a boxing phenom.“When I was little, I always wanted to box,” George, Jr. said. His trainer Malcolm Peck has been working with George for about a year.“The determination, the way he processes things, the energy he has is different,” Peck said. “It’s definitely different.”When George was a 2-year-old, he would walk around the house punching everything in his path.“T trained by punching the couch,” he said. “My dad would be asking me what I was doing. I’d be ‘ha, ha, ha, ha’ punching the couch.”“He punched a hole in the side of that couch,” his father George, Sr. added. And, that’s how he got the nickname — Lil Savage. He’s mildly autistic and diagnosed with an extreme case of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Boxing has improved his focus.“Boxing allows you to utilize that energy, stay focused, if you’re not focused and you look to your left or right, you’re going to get hit in the face,” George, Sr. said. “It’s going to hurt pretty bad."“It helps him with his attention span tremendously. His grades have improved. He went from being a D-F student to an A-B student.”Lil Savage trains for about four hours each day. He wakes up a 5 a.m. for conditioning drills and goes to the boxing gym after school. The hardest part for him getting into the ring was finding a trainer willing to work with such a young boxer.“No one wanted to train me because I was a little kid,” George, Jr. said. “But when I showed them I could spar, then they really wanted to train me.”He knows the stakes are high with gloves on in the ring, and he wants to be on top.“My goal is to be the best boxer and be myself.”You can see Lil Savage in action later this month. He will be the half time show during the ‘Rumble in the Bay’ boxing event at the JCC Center on November 21.This story was first published by Kyle Burger at WFTS in Tampa Bay, Florida. 1947
