SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man who was convicted of driving drunk when he hit a Lyft car, killing the driver, was sentenced in court Thursday.Steven Quintero was sentenced to 16 years in prison following an emotional day in court in which three young women in the car at the time of the crash and the victim’s sister all gave statements. “The worst part of my story is that I remember every detail of the crash," said Kelly Hoffman with a shaky voice. "I am haunted by the memory of the violent, powerful impact and the sound of the bending metal and shattering glass," she added.A jury convicted Quintero of DUI causing injury, hit-and-run and driving on a suspended license in the crash that killed Henry Reyes along State Route 94 just east of downtown San Diego.RELATED: Driver who hit and killed Lyft driver in 2016 faces retrialThe crash happened on October 1, 2016. Reyes pulled over on the side of the road when one of the passengers inside the Lyft, Sarah Smith, got sick.When Reyes pulled over, he got out to help Smith out of the car and get her water. While walking around the front of the car to get back in, the Lyft was struck from behind, killing Reyes.Smith, Hoffman and Jessica Techel all suffered major injuries in the crash. “When I see photos of the car I am reminded that I’m lucky to be alive, have all my limbs and my mental capacity," Techel told the court.Reyes' sister brought photos of her brother to court. In one of them, he was with his 2-year-old son. Evette Rous testified how important her brother was to her and her family.  He gave her away at her wedding, and was always around with a sarcastic comment for his sister. She said her life is forever changed. “When Steven Quintero made the decision to drink and drive, he not only killed my brother, he killed a part of each of us who lived Henry. He killed dreams, and memories yet to be made," she said.Rous said her mother didn't come to court because she felt there was no justice for Henry Reyes.  The victims all testified they were disappointed when two different juries failed to convict Quintero of murder.  In exchange for not trying Quintero a third time, he agreed to go to prison for 16 years, without the possibility of probation.  Quintero also agreed not to appeal his case.Quintero did not address or even look at his victims as they spoke.  His attorney told them he apologizes for his actions and is filled with remourse.Rous called the apology an insult.The 2016 crash wasn’t the first time Quintero was found to be driving under the influence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Teachers are quickly adapting to online lesson plans to engage their students.Third grade teacher Carlisa Flanders said Friday was the first day she'd been back to school since Grant K-8 shut its doors March 13 due to coronavirus concerns.Flanders said the day the school closed was hectic and stressful, "we had a couple hours to hussle. I put together two weeks of work, took as much as I could went home and hunkered down."She was emotional thinking of the future, wondering when she was going to see her students again and when school would reopen.Tuesday was the day she was able to go online, using a program called Zoom, and video conference with her students. She said 18 of the 21 students have been attending school this week.Friday morning, their homework assignment was to bring one thing to share. Many of her students showed off their pets."The majority of my focus is going to be making sure I stay connected with my students, making sure they feel the love," she said, gesturing at a board behind her with the words, 'Good Morning! You are awesome! You are loved!' written in different colored markers.Flanders said right now class is optional and labeled as enrichment. She said Thursday she read a book to the kids.Parents, like mom Leona Smith, said the social interaction from class is exactly what her son has been missing, "that connection he has, and the bonds that he has with his friends and his teacher it's like no other.""I think we forget how much school and their friends and their teachers are part of their everyday life," Smith said.Mrs. Flanders has been working tirelessly to bridge boundaries with online education, "I am now texting, communicating with friends I now have in Georgia, in Texas, in Oregon who are also third grade teachers and I'm collaborating virtually with strangers but their hearts are in the exact same place as mine and we're all just like try this, try this, try this."She said her tech savvy students are also stepping up teaching her tricks, like starting a chat and sharing pictures through the program. 'Our first lesson was how to mute and unmute the microphone,' Mrs. Flanders said.Friday was emotional. Mrs. Flanders said she was glad to go back to school and see fellow teachers' cars in the parking lot, but could only wave hello from a distance. "I got to go back to school for 20 minutes, I got my charts, I got our class mascot, this is happy," she said holding a rainbow hedgehog stuffed animal. She said she also grabbed a large stack of books.She was also happy to get back a semblance of a routine, saying class will start online officially on April 27."Oh gosh, it's mind boggling to think how these grades will actually count towards them finishing the third grade year," Mrs. Flanders said concerned.She's focusing instead on each lesson and the positive impact she can make on her students."At the end of every school day I usually hug, high-five or fist bump my kids, so our first Zoom, we decided this is our new way of hugging," She said making an 'air-hug' gesture, "So to all of you here's a hug. We'll get through this."The San Diego Unified School District said schools will be soft launching online education April 6. That way they can connect students in need with computers and WiFi, so everyone is ready for the hard launch April 27. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego released Friday body-worn camera video and hundreds of pages of documents related to a 2018 officer-involved shooting. Raul Rivera was shot and killed by police on Hollister Street and Tocayo Avenue in May 2018 after police say he came at them with a knife. The new documents show police collected 28 9mm cartridge casings, nine bean bag cartridge casings, and four Taser cartridges from the scene. At one point, the video shows police tasing Rivera. He appears to rip off the barbs and continued to struggle. After several minutes, the violent scene comes to an end when police shoot and kill Rivera. They say he charged them with a knife. The San Diego County District Attorney's office did not bring charges against any of the three officers who fired.The report noted, "law enforcement officers were confronted by an agitated subject who was armed with a knife and was under the influence of narcotics. Mr. Rivera urged officers to shoot him as he advanced toward them."  At the time of the shooting, family members told 10News Rivera was in a bad mental state and wished the police had helped him, not hurt him. On Friday Rivera's sister told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin she was too shaken to talk about the loss of her brother. She would only say that she loves him and is disappointed in the way police have handled things to this point.  1495

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The California Center for the Arts, Escondido will host drive-in live concerts and a movie series this month.The concerts and movie screenings will be held at the former Nordstrom parking lot at Westfield North County at 8 p.m. Spaces for more than 250 vehicles will be made available and spaced apart to keep listeners distanced.The scheduled shows start on Aug. 14 with a showing of the classic musical Grease and continue on Aug. 15 and 16 with a performance by Jersey Boys stars Christian Hoff and Travis Cloer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The cities of Escondido and La Mesa are taking measures to help restaurants expand outdoor dining after a rollback of indoor dining in the county due to surging coronavirus cases.Starting Friday, Escondido will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction on Grand Avenue, between Maple Street and Juniper St., to allow restaurants to expand temporary outdoor seating.
