DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — There's something of a spectacle along the beach in Del Mar these days: A bulldozer that's helping to preserve the city's main attraction.The heavy equipment is taking wet sand from the water line up to the public entrance areas, where it will protect access points to the beach. On Wednesday, the work was being done near the 23rd Street entrance. On Tuesday, it was closer to homes near 29th Street. "Without a beach in Del Mar, we're not Del Mar," said Councilman Dwight Worden. Worden says the bulldozer can only do so much. In the bigger picture, the city is negotiating with the California Coastal Commission on how it can combat rising sea levels. Worden noted that scientists have predicted the sea level to rise by six feet by the year 2100. "If it rises, it's going to erode the beaches, if it floods more from climate change, we'll have more flood water coming down and putting them at risk, so it's a combination," he said.Worden says the city has a plan to preserve its beaches through at least 2050 largely through a sand replenishment program, which the commission has not approved. He said Del Mar has put a controversial plan called "Managed Retreat" off the table. Managed Retreat could entail removing the multi-million dollar homes that line the shore to allow the beach to expand inland. The Coastal Commission has given the city 25 suggestions on its plan. Worden, however, said some of those suggestions appear to be nudging the city toward practices that could be like Managed Retreat. "If you look at the 25 changes, they're kind of gumming around that back and through the kitchen door," he said. The two agencies will next meet in February. Delta is partnering with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to become the first airline to launch a contact tracing initiative for international travelers arriving in the United States.Beginning Dec. 15, the Atlanta-based carrier will ask all customers to voluntarily provide their contact information for "contact tracing and public health follow-up efforts.""This will give the CDC access to the data in moments, dramatically decreasing the time it takes to notify affected customers via local health departments," Delta said in a press release.Each passenger will need to provide their full name, both a physical and email address, as well as two phone numbers.Once a passenger fills out the form, Delta will securely forward the information to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, who will pass it along to the CDC."This will give the CDC access to the data in moments, dramatically decreasing the time it takes to notify affected customers via local health departments," the company said.However, this program will not pertain to the carrier's quarantine-free flight trial to Italy, which Delta announced last week.Through a partnership with the Aeroporti de Roma and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta will have a first-of-its-kind trans-Atlantic COVID-19 testing program.Delta said that participating consumers eligible to travel would be granted an exemption from quarantine restrictions on arrival into Italy. 1448

DENVER – A natural gas explosion caused at least one building to partially collapse Tuesday in Denver, injuring nine people. Simon Crittle, a spokesperson for Denver Health Medical Center, said two people were transported to the hospital by ambulance after the explosion and collapse. One of the people suffered traumatic injuries in the explosion. The other person was stable Tuesday afternoon.Crittle said that several other people were being treated at the scene of the explosion and collapse and that first responders were looking for other possible victims.Denver Fire Captain Greg Pixley said the explosion was reported at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and said several buildings were damaged in the area. One person who had been trapped was rescued by firefighters.Pixley said that crews were working to put out an active fire at the scene in addition to working to reduce the chance of other explosions in the area and further collapses. He said there were no reported deaths as of 2:10 p.m.An Xcel Energy spokeswoman on scene said all of the company equipment is intact up to the meters, meaning the explosion was likely caused by a customer. Xcel is working to turn off gas remotely. The spokeswoman said the company has a distribution site at Lipan Street and Santa Fe Drive and staff at that location said they felt the explosion.Eileen Andrews, who owns the nearby Baker Neighborhood Market, said she saw a man run from the wreckage of the explosion who had his clothes blown almost entirely off his body and that the man suffered burns."I mean everything was exposed -- he barely had a couple strings left of his pants. "It was just like the biggest, loudest boom I've ever heard."She said some men who had been working on her business' HVAC system ran over to help the man and another trapped woman.Another neighbor, Edward Scott, said he was on the phone with his insurance company at his nearby home when the explosion happened."[The insurance agent] was on the phone with me going, 'What happened, what happened?' and I said, 'I don't know, I think my house just blew up,'" Scott said.He said he was hit by wood debris from the explosion and that the shockwave from the blast was so intense he thought his own home had exploded. When he realized it was another home across the street, he said he walked over to the scene and saw a person rescued from the rubble."It was two people ... a lady. And then this guy picked her up and firemen carried her out of the house," Scott said. DEL MAR (KGTV)- The popular stairs that connect Torrey Pines State Beach to the reserve trails are being removed for repairs. Park maintenance crews will be barricading the stairs Monday evening. They will be completely removed Tuesday morning, before high tide. The stairs will be removed for repairs for four to six weeks. They plan to repair as much as they can and keep the original metal staircase. The stairs have been in place for ten years. Crews tell 10News about one million hikers use the stairs annually. With high foot traffic and the wear and tear from the salt water, the stairs need some preventative work. The trails will remain open while the stairs are removed. Hikers will only be able to access the trails from the reserve trailheads. 764

(KGTV) - A horse died Monday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the fourth death at the track since the start of the summer racing season in July. “We are saddened to confirm that Bri Bri, an unraced three-year-old filly, was humanely euthanized today after suffering a serious injury to her pelvis during training,” the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club read in a statement. “We are deeply sorry for her and her human connections.” Emergency personnel and track veterinarians responded to the emergency immediately, said DMTC officials. Del Mar was among the nation’s safest racetracks last year, but experienced the deaths of two horses on the second day of the season. Charge A Bunch, trained by Carla Gaines, ran headfirst into Carson Valley, trained by Bob Baffert. Another of Baffert’s horses, Bowl of Soul, had a fetlock injury and was euthanized less than two weeks later. Bri Bri was trained by Jim Cassidy. Track officials said they will meet with him to discuss the matter. “Del Mar has implemented a series of safety and welfare reforms over the last several racing seasons, including the creation of an independent five-member panel to review all entries.
