RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California police department says three middle school students have been arrested after attempting to free another student from custody. The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Saturday that a 15-year-old Tahquitz High student arrived at Rancho Viejo Middle School Friday and argued with a school employee.Hemet police says the high school girl was arrested on suspicion of threatening a public employee after a campus police officer attempted to speak with her.Authorities say three other minors attempted to stop the officer from arresting the girl by blocking the patrol car door and trying to punch the officer.Authorities say the officer called for backup and the girl, two 13-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy were arrested.School officials say the students should expect to face disciplinary action from the district. 869

SACRAMENTO (KGTV) -- Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill Monday requiring California State University undergraduates to take an ethnic studies course to graduate. The change comes amid national calls to dismantle systemic and unconscious racism, starting with public education. The bill was authored by local Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus and longtime professor of Africana Studies at San Diego State University.“What we are seeing in Washington and on American streets right now demonstrates the necessity of understanding the experiences and perspectives of these historically marginalized and oppressed groups who have nonetheless contributed to the building of our country,” Weber said in a statement. “This is great day for students and for the state. I am grateful to the Governor for joining me in moving California forward.”The bill, AB 1460, requires all CSU undergraduates to take at least one three-unit course in ethnic studies. The course must focus on Native Americans, African Americans, or Latina and Latino Americans. The legislation will go into effect beginning with students graduating in the 2024-25 academic year. The bill represents the first change to the CSU general education curriculum in over 40 years. 1283

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A spokesman says one of California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s children may have been exposed to the coronavirus at school and is in quarantine. Nathan Click says the child began a 14-day quarantine after the family was told a classmate at the private school in Sacramento had tested positive for COVID-19. He says the family is following state protocols, and the governor, his wife and four children have all tested negative for the virus. Newsom said last month that his children had returned to their school, sparking criticism even as millions of public schoolchildren continue to study through distance learning. 643

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will begin allowing the reopening of schools, day camps, bars, gyms and some professional sports with modifications at the end of next week. Mark Ghaly, the state's top health official, says the state plans to release guidance on Friday for counties to follow to reopen a broad range of businesses that have been closed since mid-March to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The guidelines were not immediately available. But only counties that have met certain thresholds on cases, testing and preparedness will be allowed to follow the guidance on other sectors. The state's county-by-county variance is available online here.San Diego's Board of Supervisors voted this month to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting they be allowed to reopen the local economy. The board voted 4-1, with Supervisor Nathan Fletcher voting "no," to reopen gyms, hotels, nail salons, wineries and breweries, churches at full capacity, theme parks, youth sports, charter and fishing boats, community pools, and museums, Supervisor Jim Desmond tweeted. This week, the City of San Diego announced it would begin reopening several popular beach-area parks, piers, and boardwalks this month. The county also started to allow sitting and relaxing on beaches in addition to passive activities already allowed. As of Friday morning, San Diego County had reported 7,940 coronavirus cases and 288 deaths. About 1,380 people have been hospitalized and 395 people were in intesive care with the virus. 1725

Right in the middle of America's opioid crisis, there’s a new wave of drug overdoses. This time it’s linked to synthetic marijuana, also known as K2.Joyce Grady has seen the impact the drug is having in D.C. Living in shelters and on the streets has given her a front row seat to the problem.“It's gotten to the point if you hear an ambulance, or police, you automatically put that together with a K2 overdose,” Grady said. The drug is often made to look like marijuana. A mix of chemicals is usually sprayed onto herb or plants, that is then smoked. It can be cheaper and more powerful than marijuana, which is part of its appeal. However, it comes with a high risk.“With marijuana, you can still take a puff and get a smile,” Grady said. “With this K2, you can take a puff and die.” 790
