Three Gulf Coast states were placed under a Tropical Storm Warning on Friday as Tropical Storm Cristobal is setting its sights for the US late Sunday. According the National Hurricane Center, Cristobal is a minimal tropical storm along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico with top winds of 40 MPH. The slow-moving storm has dumped heavy rain over the Yucatan Peninsula this week. After stalling out over the Yucatan Peninsula, the National Hurricane Center projects the storm will move across the Gulf of Mexico this weekend before coming ashore late Sunday. Parts of the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coast are under a Tropical Storm Watch. The Atlantic Hurricane Season is off to its most active start in recorded history. Cristobal is already the third named storm of 2020. No other hurricane season has had three named storms this early in the year. Most major projections are calling for an abnormally busy hurricane season in the Atlantic. The storm is forecast to remain a tropical storm through landfall, although the National Hurricane Center expects Cristobal to strengthen into a strong tropical storm by landfall. Among the locations under a Tropical Storm Warning is New Orleans, which is one of the most susceptible cities to flooding in the US. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a State of Emergency ahead of the storm. Along with heavy rains and gusty winds, tornadoes and storm surge are also possible with Cristobal. 1453
The United States women's soccer squad is off to the semifinals after defeating World Cup host France by a 2-1 margin on Friday. The United States, ranked No. 1 in the world, faced its toughest test yet against France. France is ranked No. 4 in the world rankings, but many considered the French the USA's toughest challenge. Megan Rapinoe scored both of the United States' goals. She opened scoring in the fifth minutes, and tacked on the eventual game-winner in the 65th minute. France attempted a late rally after cutting the United States' 2-0 lead by one in the 81st minute off of a Wendie Renard goal. The USA will face England on Tuesday for the chance to return to the finals and defend its 2015 title. Perhaps it was fitting that Rapinoe was the catalyst for the Red, White and Blue on Friday. She has drawn the ire of President Donald Trump this week after Rapinoe said she would not visit the White House if the USA wins a title in France. “Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!” Trump wrote on Twitter. After Friday's game, the US is just two wins away from a title after winning all three matches in group play plus the first two games in the tournament round. 1204
The Trump administration told Congress it intends to dramatically cut the number of refugees it will admit in the next fiscal year, only up to 18,000 refugees, according to the State Department -- marking a historic low and threatening to further erode the nation's refugee resettlement program.Under President Donald Trump, the administration has slowly chipped away at the refugee cap, which dictates how many refugees may be admitted to the United States. The ceiling for fiscal year 2019 stands at 30,000, which, at the time, was the lowest level since 1980.The State Department announced the proposed refugee ceiling as part of a larger number of combined refugee and asylum claims expected for the next fiscal year.In a call with reporters, senior administration officials said the report submitted to Congress allocates admissions by "group of special humanitarian interests to the United States," instead of by region -- including Iraqis who assisted the United States, those who have suffered or feared religious persecution, and nationals of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. The White House also released an executive order Thursday that requires state and local governments to consent to receiving refugees, with some exceptions. Refugee resettlement agencies are charged with placing refugees around the country, but the new executive order could allow states and local jurisdictions to deny refugees entry. The move continues the administration's push to limit the number of people admitted to the US and comes after discussion that some in the White House wanted to let 1597
The Trump administration has upgraded its already dire warning to Americans against all international travel as the coronavirus outbreak spreads. At the same time, the State Department disclosed the first positive cornovirus test in a Washington-based employee and announced new restrictions the issuance of passports to U.S, citizens. The department on Thursday issued a new travel alert urging Americans not to go abroad under any circumstances and to return home if they are already abroad unless they plan to remain overseas. It then said passport applications for U.S. citizens at home and abroad would be severely curtailed.“The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19,” it said in the new advice. “In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. U.S. citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel.”Until the upgrade, the department’s advice to U.S. citizens was to “reconsider” all international travel under what is known as a “level three” alert. The global “level four” warning was unprecedented as such alerts are generally reserved for specific countries embroiled in conflict, natural disasters or where Americans face specific risks. However, the upgrade will likely have little practical effect because it is not mandatory and there are now limited transportation options for international travel. The only way to ban Americans from going abroad would be to invalidate the use of U.S. passports for such travel, a bar that is currently in place only for North Korea. In addition, the main impact of State Department travel alerts is to cause insurance companies to increase premiums or cancel travel policies for group and individual tours, many of which had been scrapped even before the alert was raised to level three earlier this week. The department has already advised Americans that many U.S. embassies and consulates abroad are operating with reduced staff and hours due to the COVID-19 outbreak and that services for Americans in need of assistance are limited.Full Coverage: 2286
