BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States are in close touch for Chinese President Hu Jintao's state visit to the U.S. in January, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Thursday.Jiang said President Hu's visit will be a major event of the China-U.S. relations in the new era, and China hopes the visit could further push forward the positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relations.

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) - Offenders of China's new regulations on waste electronic equipment could face fines up to 500,000 yuan (75,450 U.S. dollar), after it becomes effective on Saturday.The regulations could be regarded as the country's latest effort to promote comprehensive utilization of resources and environmentally friendly economy, Wan Bentai, chief engineer of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, said Tuesday.The ministry has introduced a set of supplementary guidelines for the implementation, which, for example, specify rules and procedures regarding issues including recyclers' qualification and governmental subsidies to e-waste recycling initiatives, Wan said.Recyclers which engage in e-waste recycling business without certificates could face fines ranging from 50,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan, according to the regulation.Wan estimated that nearly 30 million units of televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and computers were discarded in China each year.Those e-wastes, sometimes simply burned or soaked in strong acid, had severely polluted the environment in many locations in the past, said Wan.He believed that the new regulation made "remarkable progress" in environmental protection by extending manufacturers' responsibility into the post-use recycling of their products.

TAIPEI, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- On the eve of Taiwan's mayoral and city councilor elections, Sean Lien, son of Lien Chan, honorary chairman of Kuomintang (KMT) party, was reportedly shot in the face when he was campaigning for a KMT candidate in Taipei County Friday evening.He was being treated at a local hospital. Local media cited doctors as saying Sean Lien's brain was not injured and his injury would not endanger his life.A spokeswoman of the hospital where Sean Lien was treated said he was sober-minded when he was sent to the hospital. WUHAN, Nov.15 (Xinhua) -- Russia and India Monday reiterated their readiness to coordinate with China as it prepares for the third BRIC Summit and related events in 2011.Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Indian Minister of External Affairs SM Krishna made the statements when they met with Yang Jiechi, Chinese Foreign Minister, on Monday.The ministers expressed their determination to work toward strengthening cooperation within the BRIC group, which was acquiring growing importance.During the meeting, Yang said the three countries could cooperate more in safeguarding security in the Asia-Pacific region.Yang said they should insist on common security, resolve disputes in a peaceful way and work together on non-traditional threats to make further efforts on regional security cooperation.The foreign ministers agreed to push forward trilateral practical cooperation and decided the next trilateral foreign ministers' meeting would be held in Russia in 2011."BRIC" is an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India and China.In recent years, the four nations have strengthened dialogue and cooperation, and held frequent exchanges of views on major issues in the international economic and development fields.During the second BRIC Summit in Brazil this year, Chinese President Hu Jintao announced the next BRIC Summit would be held in China in 2011.
