A Racine man was arrested Wednesday while expecting a pizza delivery. Mount Pleasant Police Officers were called to Toppers Pizza regarding fraudulent money they had repeatedly received from a house.Officers confirmed that the money was fake and were notified that the same address had called again with a food order.Officers went with the delivery driver to the address and knocked on the door. When the suspect answered and asked if it was Toppers they officers responded "Yeah" and the door opened. Before officers could introduce themselves to explain why they were there, the suspect tried to slam the door and the officers pushed back. The suspect, identified as Raymond Prideaux, did not comply with orders to stop resisting so officers tased him. He has been charged with obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct.Prideaux has a lengthy criminal history including possession of THC, retail theft and OWI. 926

ALLENDALE, Mich. — Hundreds of dollars in school lunch debt in Allendale, Michigan, is about to be paid off in full. That's thanks to a mom teaching her kids the value of charity and a local business who stepped in to help.Aaron Haight says she wants her children to learn to be a blessing whenever possible and that you can do that in many different ways."I wanted to give back to the community, but I also wanted to teach my kids kind of about their privilege and how important it is to give back when you are in a place of privilege," Haight said. That’s why, a few years ago, Haight's family started fundraising to pay off hundreds of dollars in school lunch debt for Allendale Public Schools."Every year, we worked with Jody who is the director of food service at Allendale Public Schools, and she would kind of tell us about how much money we needed to raise and we would raise it through friends and family and some local businesses contributed throughout the year," she explained. That was the plan again this year. That is until Trail Point Brewing Company in Allendale stepped in and pledged to pay the debt in full.Co-owner Greg Evans says he was inspired when the Mitten Brewing and Fetch Brewing did something similar.Evans said, "It's something that really hit home to me. There are kids in this area that are saddled with school debt, and we try to pride ourselves on being a community center."He explained, "This was one way we could give back to the community by clearing this lunch debt so it's one less thing that they have to worry about."Haight says it goes to show what a giving community Allendale is."I think in Allendale we're just very fortunate that we do have a lot of smaller local businesses that have been very generous with their time and their money with giving back to the community, and this is just another example of that," she said.Haight says the debt is usually about 0, but they won’t know the total until the school year ends next June. This article was written by Darren Cunningham for 2041

Actress Anna Faris was spending Thanksgiving were her family at a home in Lake Tahoe, California, when the house filled with carbon monoxide gas. In a tweet thanking first responders, Faris said, "I’m not quite sure how to express gratitude to the north Lake Tahoe fire department- we were saved from carbon monoxide- it’s a stupidly dramatic story but I’m feeling very fortunate."According to a press release by the North Tahoe Fire Protection District, members of Faris' family began feeling ill Thursday night, with symptoms akin to altitude sickness. After two of the 13 people in the house were treated at a hospital, the hospital relayed that the illnesses were related to carbon monoxide poisoning. Two additional patients were transported to the hospital, and nine others were treated at the scene. When fire crews evacuated Faris' family from the home, they measured carbon monoxide levels nearly 6 times the recommended indoor level for carbon monoxide, even after the home was ventilated. The home, which was said to be a short-term rental, was not equipped with a carbon monoxide detector. Fire Chief Mike Schwartz of the North Tahoe Fire Protection District stressed that those using short-term rentals should check for working carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. “We are so thankful to report that this holiday disaster was averted,” said Fire Chief Mike Schwartz. “Situational awareness is so important. Whether you are at home or traveling, it is important ensure that smoke and CO alarms are in working order anywhere you stay. It’s not a bad idea to consider bringing your own alarm when you travel, just to be safe.”Justin Boggs is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. 1708

AKRON, Ohio — More than 200 Ellet High School students received their diplomas Friday night at Akron Civic Theatre in Ohio. Among them was an 87-year-old man getting an honorary diploma, 70 years after he left school for the military.Floyd Edward Hoskins, known to friends and family members as Ed, left Ellet High School in 1949 at age 17 to join the military.“Three years, three months, 19 days,” Hoskins said of his total time in the Army. During that time, he said, he was supposed to serve in Korea but was sent to Alaska for two years instead. When he came home, Hoskins said he initially had trouble finding a job but eventually landed one at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, where he worked for “44 years, four months, three weeks and one day.”Hoskins moved to Hawaii two years ago to live with one of his sons and his daughter-in-law. His daughter-in-law, Cynthia Allen Hoskins, began doing some research into veterans’ benefits.“We are retired military, my husband and I,” Cynthia Allen Hoskins said. “And we were doing some research as far as our kids and their benefits in order to continue their college education.”She ran across information about the benefits the State of Ohio provides to veterans, where she learned her father-in-law might be eligible to receive his high school diploma. She inquired with his former school and found out he was eligible.“His reaction was kind of, ‘Ah, I don’t know if I really want to do this. It’s just a piece of paper,’ ” Cynthia Allen Hoskins said. “But after we explained to him, ‘Dad, you know, you really pushed education on us, we push it onto the grandkids. So why not?’ You know, if this is something that you deserve, go for it.”She said her father-in-law eventually came around to the idea.On Friday, when asked if he ever thought this day would come, Ed Hoskins said, “No, never.”“It’s an honor, but it’s scary,” he said, tearing up. “I’m not used to being in the limelight.”Decades older than his fellow graduates, Ed Hoskins received his diploma first, to loud applause. 2039
