CHICAGO - Former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett has pleaded not guilty to restored charges that accuse him of staging a racist, homophobic attack against himself last year and falsely reporting it to Chicago police. His lawyer, Tina Glandian, entered the not guilty pleas on his behalf to six counts of felony disorderly conduct. She also told Judge James B. Linn that she's asked the Illinois Supreme Court to halt the case. Glandian told reporters that the revived prosecution is “an ordeal” for Smollett. Smollett has repeatedly denied police allegations that he staged the attack to get attention and further his career. His next court date is March 18. 670
Days after returning home from a Punta Cana vacation, Marie Trainer called out of work with a backache and nausea. Then her temperature spiked and dropped, sending her to a local Stark County, Ohio, emergency room in the early hours of May 11.When Trainer woke in a hospital bed nine days later, her hands and legs had been amputated. It took doctors seven days to discover Trainer incurred a severe infection, not from a "tropical" travel disease as they first suspected, but from her German shepherd's kisses.Trainer contracted a rare infection from the bacteria capnocytophaga canimorsus, probably when her German shepherd puppy, Taylor, licked an open cut.Dr. Margaret Kobe, the medical director of infectious disease at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio, treated Trainer and described her as "delirious" when she entered the intensive care unit. Shortly after, she became unconscious. Her skin started changing rapidly to a purplish-red color, and then it progressed into gangrene. Trainer then developed a blood clot."It was difficult to identify, We're kind of the detectives. We went through all these diagnoses until we could narrow things down," Kobe said. The infection spread to the tip of her nose, ears, legs and face. "She didn't lose parts of her face. But her extremities is what she had to have surgery on," Kobe said. The family sought a second opinion, hoping to save Trainer's limbs. But doctors said the damage had already been done. Blood tests and cultures confirmed the diagnosis of capnocytophaga."That was a pretty hard pill for us to all swallow, to say she was fine a couple days ago on vacation and now she's actively getting worse by the minute and now her hands and feet aren't alive, like this doesn't happen, it's 2019," said Gina Premier, Trainer's step-daughter and a nurse at Aultman Hospital.Trainer has had eight surgeries so far and is working with doctors to be fitted for prostheses."This is off the scale, one of the worst cases we have seen in terms of how ill people become with infections," Kobe said. "She was close to death."A rare cause of illness in humansMarie Trainer says she knows her German shepherd puppy licked a slightly infected scratch. When the bacteria spread to humans, they do so through bites, scratches or other close contact with dogs and cats, according to the 2336

Eli Manning, champion of two Super Bowl titles, retires from football after 16 seasons with the New York Giants. Manning won Super Bowl MVP honors following the 2007 and 2011 seasons. Manning is just one of five players in NFL history to win two Super Bowl MVP awards. He also earned Pro Bowl honors in 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2015. Manning was the first pick in the 2004 NFL Draft by the then-San Diego Chargers, who he repeatedly warned up to draft day not to select him and refused to play for the team. After being selected by the Chargers, he was immediately traded to the New York Giants for fourth overall pick Philip Rivers.Manning started every regular season game for 12 seasons from 2005 through 2016. From 2015 through early in 2019, he only missed one game. But early in the 2019 season, after losing three of the Giants’ first four games, Manning was benched in lieu of rookie Daniel Jones. Despite the rough finish, the Giants paid homage to Manning's career on Wednesday. "It meant something to Eli to be the Giants quarterback, and it meant even more to us," said John Mara, the Giants' president and chief executive officer. "We are beyond grateful for his contributions to our organization and look forward to celebrating his induction into the Giants Ring of Honor in the near future." 1314
China's National Health Commission says the number of cases of a new respiratory virus has risen to 830 with 25 deaths. The update Friday morning also confirmed the first death outside the central province of Hubei. The health commission in Hebei, a northern province bordering Beijing, said an 80-year-old man died after showing symptoms upon his return from a two-month stay in Wuhan to see relatives. Wuhan is the capital of Hubei and has been the epicenter of the outbreak of the coronavirus first detected last month. 534
