SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A cold-case murder shrouded in mystery for decades just led investigators across the country, straight to a San Diego man. In June of 1984, 15-year-old Reesa Trexler was found naked, raped and stabbed to death in her grandparents' home in Salisbury, outside Charlotte, N.C. For more than 35 years there were few answers. Last year, Trexler's younger sister, Jodie Laird, appeared on the Dr. Phil show to quash long-held speculation that she was the killer. The big break was DNA evidence uploaded to a public genealogy website, which pointed to a suspect. According to search warrants obtained by WBTV, the suspect was Curtis Edward Blair, who was still living in San Diego when he died of heart failure in 2004. His body was exhumed from his grave in North Carolina for DNA samples, before police closed the case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A father and daughter were taken to the hospital for injuries related to an apartment fire in Carmel Valley Tuesday afternoon. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters were called to an apartment complex on the 12000 block of Torrey Bluff Drive around 4:30 p.m. The department says the man was taken to the hospital with burns to his hands and face while his daughter was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The fire was reportedly contained to only one room of the apartment. Preliminary investigations revealed that the blaze may have been started by some sort of device the father was using to smoke. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Two men were wounded when another man opened fire from the passenger's seat of a vehicle on a street in the Encanto neighborhood, police said Tuesday.It happened around 10:10 p.m. Monday on Klauber Avenue near Attix Street, west of 69th Street, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 25-year-old man and a 28-year-old man were standing outside their home when a woman drove up in a vehicle, described as a black or white BMW, with a man in the front passenger's seat, Buttle said.The man in the passenger's seat, believed to be in his late 20s, fired at least seven shots and the younger man was struck four times in the stomach while the older man was struck in a buttock and a leg, the officer said.Family members started to transport the victims to a hospital, but they were stopped by police, then paramedics took the victims to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, Buttle said.No detailed suspect descriptions were immediately available. 1029

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A computer virus prevented most of the San Diego Union-Tribune's readership from waking up with a paper Saturday morning.The U-T's Editor in Chief Jeff Light said in a statement online the virus affected the production of the U-T and the LA Times, and the Southern California editions of the Wall Street Journal, and New York Times through Los Angeles' Olympic Printing Plant. Light wrote that systems still used through the paper's former owner, Tribune Publishing, had been compromised by the virus Thursday night and spread to critical systems by Friday.The virus also affected the paper's digital replica online. The U-T said it plans to deliver the Saturday edition with Sunday's edition to print subscribers."I apologize to our customers for this inconvenience. Thank you for your patience and support. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of parents attended a meeting with San Diego Unified School District officials, after lead was found in drinking water at Garfield Elementary.Parents were notified of the discovery last week when the school made calls and sent letters.“It seems like the infrastructure is kind of old and replacing that stuff seems to get longer and further down on the back of the list,” said parent Jared Stodelle.Tuesday, a doctor and an SDUSD representative answered parents questions at the elementary school. They broke down the water sampling reports and gave parents tips and advice about lead exposure.52 water fixtures on campus were tested. Three were above the district action level of 5 parts per billion (ppb), while one was above the federal action level of 15 ppb. According to the district, the fixture above the federal action level tested at 17.28 ppb, but had been out of service for an entire year. They say no students had any access to that specific fountain.“Now that it's been brought up to me, I'm going to look into it a little more and that's why I was trying to understand what the levels were and what they actually meant,” said parent James Smith after attending the informational meeting.As soon as the results came back, the fountains were secured and taped off, parents were notified, and an informational parent meeting was scheduled.According to SDUSD Facilities Communications Supervisor, Samer Naji, the district now has three options on what to do next: either repair or uninstall the fixture completely, put in a lead certified water filter, or install new plumbing.In the meantime, children will be given bottled water.Parents who spoke to 10News say they were happy with the way the school and district notified them and took immediate action.“We give them credit because if you see a problem, you take care of it,” said Stodelle. “You don't want to hide it from anybody especially the students and parents.”At the meeting, the doctor told parents concerned about the potential lead exposure to schedule an appointment with their child’s physician to request a blood screening for lead.
