SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Yuma Police officer testified Tuesday in his trial for the rape of a woman in Kensington.Jared Elkins, 34, raped his wife’s cousin after a family gathering at her home on Marlborough Drive last year, prosecutors said. The group had been out to dinner, then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at home.She testified last week, saying she didn’t yell during the alleged attack because Elkins threatened to kill her. His wife was asleep across the hall at the time.After the encounter, the woman said she ran into her mother’s room for help, and they both escaped out a window.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Police said Elkins told them that the sex was consensual and the rape charges were made out of guilt.Elkins told the jury the alleged victim started flirting with him after everyone else went to sleep.“There was mutual flirtations between the two of us and we were being adults,” said Elkins, who testified the woman was “cuddling, almost snuggling” with him.“She said yeah, it was surprising to me; I was excited a younger attractive woman, you know, it kind of confirmed everything on the couch,” Elkins said.Elkins resigned from the Yuma Police Department in 2017. He is facing nine felony counts including forcible rape and could serve 14 years in prison if convicted.City News Service contributed to this report. 1462

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 105-year-old World War II veteran is set to receive his college diploma 83 years after graduating.Bill Vogt, who was one of the first students to set foot on San Diego State University's campus after it opened in 1931, will receive his diploma in commerce retro-dated to Feb. 1, 1935, on Thursday.Vogt graduated from SDSU mid-year in 1935 but never got a printed diploma. He is the last remaining SDSU student to have attended classes at the university's old campus in University Heights, according to the school.The special presentation comes after Vogt elected to become a lifetime member of SDSU Alumni in May, a special alumni program offered by the university. He's also believed to be the oldest person ever to become an Alumni lifetime member, the school added.The WWII veteran served in the US Navy, and also served in the Korea and Vietnam wars. He's spent several years working on the East Coast as well since his graduation. 984

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Thousands of women nationwide are expected to participate in a series pre-election demonstrations today, including one at San Diego's Balboa Park, focusing on women's reproductive issues, getting out the vote and protesting the Trump Administration's efforts to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A number of virtual events, voter registration drives, phone banking efforts and text messaging campaigns are also planned.``There are over 400 being planned around the country and Pasadena is one of them,'' organizer Jenna Karvunidis, who is co-hosting a march outside Pasadena City Hall, told the Pasadena Now website. ``This march particularly has to do with not confirming the new Supreme Court justice until after the election.''``It was Ginsburg's dying wish to not be replaced until after the election, and I think that we should honor that.''Women's Marches have been held regularly since Jan. 21, 2017, the day after President Donald Trump was sworn into office, in one of the largest public demonstrations in U.S. history.Today's gatherings are the second under the Women's March banner this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UPDATED: MARCH 19, 2020, 7 PM - In a post to Instagram, The Gym San Diego said it would comply with the county’s order and close starting on Friday.San Diego County officials ordered all gyms and fitness centers to close Wednesday in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus.Officials also banned gathering of groups of 10 or more people in one room as people worldwide practice social distancing.Despite the orders The Gym San Diego located in Pacific Beach remained open to members."I just think personally, it’s being drawn out of proportion," said gym goer Daniel Rosati.Rosati chose to show up to The Gym and work out, telling 10News he did not see a problem with fitness center choosing to continue letting people in."I think if people have energy and they feel that good, I doubt very highly they have the coronavirus," he said. "That’s just my opinion."Rosati said he believes people were working out a safe distance apart."I know it’s very safe, there’s disinfectants everywhere, they’re wiping everything down all day long in between each person," he explained. "If anyone even slightly has the slightest cough or sniffle, the owner, Rick, asks them to leave."The San Diego Police Department said The Gym choosing to stay open is in violation of the county public health order, which is a misdemeanor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A San Diego man walked up to a horrifying sight:  his wife bloodied and unconscious in Balboa Park.Donna Gookin and her husband Ed were part of a group participating in orienteering last Wednesday in the early evening.  Orienteering is hiking sport that combines a compass, a map and locating markers.  The two were on separate parts of the trail.
