The founders come from various ethnic backgrounds, including African-American, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander.Entrepreneurs receive six months of free workspace, mentorship, and workshops - learning skills like how to access capital. Kelly Twichel is one of 13 entrepreneurs in CONNECT ALL's first cohort. Her woman-owned company Access Trax was born in a college classroom. "It's important because you want to level the playing field. Anybody has and can come up with a great idea."Twichel and the rest of the first CONNECT ALL cohort will finish their program in October. "Not having to give up equity in my company meant a lot to me because I wanted to grow this as organically as possible and really maintain control. We are a woman-owned small business, and I wanted to do everything I could to continue to foster that."She's now in the running for the Amber Grant for Women Entrepreneurs contest; if awarded, Twichel's company would receive ,000. Community members can vote for her company now through December. The goal of CONNECT ALL is to grow startups into thriving businesses which go on to hire local and strengthen the City of San Diego's economy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Carlsbad leaders this week approved nearly 0,000 to construct a new trail planned to loop around the city's strawberry fields.Carlsbad City Council voted to add the Hub Park trail to the city's Capital Improvement Program, a 2.4-mile trail on the south shore of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in an area dubbed "Hub Park."Hub Park sits on land owned by SDG&E. The city has a lease agreement with SDG&E for a portion of the trail, but not the portion that would connect to nearby roads.RELATED: San Diego County park rangers recommend these trails in 2019The city voted to take 4,500 from the General Capital Construction Fund to fund building the eight-foot wide trail. The trail would lead from a new Interstate 5 bridge to a bluff within the leased property that overlooks the lagoon, the city says. It would then loop around the strawberry fields and open space and connect to the south side of Cannon Road via existing underpasses. The trail may include picnic tables and outlook points, in addition to trail signs, dog stations, and recycling and trash bins.RELATED: Trail to Bay challenge offers 3 guided hikes for 1 cleanupHub Park trail is included in the trails master plan adopted by the City Council on Aug. 28, 2019. Under the trails plan, about 67 miles of Carlsbad's current trails would be expanded to more than 100 miles.Carlsbad will next seek out an agreement with SDG&E for public access from Cannon Rd. to the Hub Park property. A design team will have to conduct an environmental review of the proposed trail as well. It could be another three years before the project sees any construction begin. 1655

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Councilman Scott Sherman is throwing his hat in San Diego's race for the next mayor.Sherman (District 7) pulled candidate intention papers this week, signaling his impending run in 2020, according to documents.Sherman becomes one of the only GOP candidates in the race to replace Mayor Kevin Faulconer, who's also a Republican. Bay Park resident Richard Hansen, a former Democrat who left the party in 2016, entered the race in September as a Republican. In 2020, both Faulconer and Sherman will term out of their respective positions.RELATED: Poll: Gloria pulls early lead in San Diego mayoral raceSan Diego's top Democratic mayoral candidates square off in debateThe Republican councilman will enter the race against several Democratic candidates, including councilwoman Barbara Bry, Assemblyman Todd Gloria, and community activist Tasha Williamson. In a September 10News/Union-Tribune poll, of these three candidates, 46 percent of respondents were undecided on who they'd support, while 36 percent sided with Gloria, 15 percent supported Bry, and 8 percent favored Williamson. That poll was also based on whether these three names were the only ones on the ballot.Candidates have until Dec. 5 to file their nomination papers with the city. The position is technically listed as "non-partisan."Sherman's district covers Miramar, Tierrasanta, Serra Mesa, Linda Vista, Mission Valley, Grantville, Allied Gardens, Del Cerro, San Carlos, and Lake Murray. 1484

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Congressional candidate for the 53rd District and San Diego City Council President Georgette Gómez says she was unaware of an error on her 2017 tax return and says it was committed by her accountant.Gómez's 2017 tax return shows she reported almost ,000 from pension income but reported zero in actual wages. According to Transparent California, Gómez made more than ,000 that year from her job as a San Diego City Council member and an additional ,000.University of San Diego professor of law Ariel Jurow Kleiman specializes in federal tax law. ABC 10News reporter Adam Racusin asked her to look at the filing."There was a zero on the line where you would normally report your wages," Kleiman said.Discrepancies in Gómez's tax returns were first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune.The numbers on Gómez's 2018 return also don't match the dollar amounts reported on a financial disclosure report for Congressional candidates. In a statement, Gómez says her accountant made the errors, but that she has filed a corrected return and paid back the taxes."You may have seen a story about my accountant’s errors on my taxes. Like most people, I trusted my accountant to file my taxes accurately and I was shocked to find out that my 2017 returns were not properly filed. My accountant has taken responsibility for the errors. But I, too, take responsibility and I’ve filed a corrected return and paid the back taxes," Gómez said in a statement.Currently, Gómez is facing off with fellow Democrat Sara Jacobs for California's 53rd District in Congress this November. The Gómez campaign team has been sending out emails pushing for Jacobs to release her returns.A spokesperson for Jacobs told ABC 10News, "The Gómez campaign spent weeks misleading voters and crying wolf about Sara's tax returns, only to have the real story be their candidate's own negligence. With 25 days until election day, now would be a good time for the Gómez campaign to get their own house in order."ABC 10News looked through Jacobs' tax returns as well. It shows most of her income came from dividends and capital gains. About million in 2019, million in 2018, and around million in 2017.Jacobs' tax returns show she paid around million in taxes over those years. 2283
