WASHINGTON, D.C. – Three different people who protected students from gunmen in 2018 and 2019 are being celebrated by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. The society is honoring Oregon teacher Keanon Lowe, North Carolina student Riley Howell, and Texas student Christian Garcia with its 2020 Citizen Honors Awards. The awards are given to people and organizations that exemplify the values embodied Medal of Honor: courage, sacrifice, commitment, integrity, citizenship, and patriotism.Lowe and Howell are both being honored with the society’s Single Act of Heroism Award. Lowe, a teacher and coach at Portland’s Parkrose High School, made headlines in October when he disarmed a student with a loaded shotgun and then embraced him. Voting in America is a right in our democracy, but the security of our voting machines is a concern.“I’m not exactly sure how the election fraud keeps happening, because they can make a slot machine unhackable, but it seems like the polling machines are susceptible to all kinds of intrusions and manipulation,” Colorado voter Karen Katalinich said.Cyber expert Kevin Ford says he believes the U.S. is still vulnerable to attacks.Ford, with CyberGRX, says voting machine technology differs from state to state. However, he says the problem isn’t necessarily with the machine. Rather, it’s what happens with the data after you cast your vote.“The machines themselves may keep records of who voted for whom, but in a lot of cases those records will be exported from the machine and moved to databases in the cloud and on the internet, which opens up a whole lot of other connectivity routes,” Ford said.He says many machines are connected to state websites. Some of which don’t have the best security due to lack of funding.“We already have examples of Russia accessing those databases, pulling information from those databases, and trying to attack those databases,” Ford said.Ford says intruders can try to upload some bad code to get the database to spit out valid data or destroy some of that data. He says many states have improved voting security, but others are lagging behind. While he does feel the U.S. is still vulnerable to another attack, others trust the technology.“I think people in charge of it are pretty thorough about making sure it’s done right, and if something’s wrong, it’s always brought to their attention,” Mississippi voter Ronnie Wilhite said.“It should be safe and secure enough for voters to feel confident in who they choose to elect their officials,” California voter Pen Chang said. “So, in general, I feel pretty good about the safety and security of the machines.” Ford says there is no federal requirement to look into the security of the voting system. He believes that needs to change, to make sure everyone’s vote is being counted fairly.“We need laws in place to make sure that we are looking into the voting systems so that we’re doing audits and risk assessments on those. We also need standards. Walk into Léa Rainey’s kitchen and one of the first things you’ll notice is a bucket. It’s a bucket—formerly a vinaigrette container--that would look a bit unsightly to some, filled with mostly scraps of food, coffee grounds, and egg shells.“Probably one of the first things we started doing was composting,” Rainey says. “And we actually find that if we leave the lid off of it that we get less bugs, less smell.”For the last couple of years, Rainey has been on a zero-waste journey.“Zero-waste is really about reducing waste right? So whatever form it comes in, it’s really about minimizing your waste, the things you need to throw away.”She admits it’s difficult, even two years in, but anytime she struggles, she reminds herself of the tips she gives others: it’s about the five R’s.“Refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot,” she says. The first one is the most important, she adds.“Refusing is the most important thing to do. Refuse taking a plastic bag at the checkout stand. Just say, ‘No, thank you,’ and bring your own.”Single-use plastics are another big no-no in Rainey’s house. Everything from her toothbrushes—with bamboo handle and natural bristles—to her shampoo, which she buys in bar form.“You rub the bar on your head and it foams, lathers and all the things shampoo does; it just doesn’t have a plastic bottle, she says.“If someone were to bring plastic water bottles into my house, I would freak out.”Her journey is one she now hopes to share with the world—or at least with the surrounding communities of Garden City, Idaho, a small town adjacent to Boise.This September, she’s set to open Roots Zero Waste Market, a zero-waste grocery store and café. She says it’s the only place like it in the country.“I think it’s really important for businesses to start showing up and businesses to start helping consumers to waste less.”From foods in bulk—and never stored in plastic—to packaged snacks that only come in compostable wrap.Rainey believes there’s a demand for a place like this and believes it’s only a matter of time before the concept catches on nationwide.“I feel like that groundswell is what will turn the tide and make legislators and make politicians see this is something people care about.” 2236
Walk in to Cafe 180 in Englewood, Colorado and you’ll see cookies on display, smiling staff, and a diverse menu. What you won’t see is a single price tag on any of it.“Cafe 180 is a nonprofit donation based restaurant,” Boo Crosby, the manager at Cafe 180 said. “We believe all of our guests who come through our door should be able to be provided a meal regardless of their ability to pay.”About 35 percent of the people who come in to the cafe on any given day are coming in to work for their meal, he said.Some choose to volunteer their time preparing food, cleaning, or completing other tasks. Customers can also choose to donate what they can. It’s the “pay what you can” model.“A lot of people who have never been here before need more of an explanation and that’s fine. We do our best to explain,” Kenzie Burns, a part-time employee at the cafe, said. “Sometimes not being told what to pay scares people so I think being open to the idea of it really helps people participate in our cafe and enjoy it here.”This model opens up the door to those who may not have the money to pay for a healthy meal.“We volunteer for like an hour and then we get food, it helps those who can’t really pay for their meal,” Jeffrey Valdez, one of the volunteers for the cafe, explained. He comes up to the cafe multiple times a week using public transportation. “I can come in, have a good day, start my day off, and then go from there.”“It’s very important because for some of us homeless it sucks, sometimes it’s hard for us to get by on a day to day basis,” Cafe volunteer Amber Priest said. “It actually helps because I can actually have a full meal and actually work.” On the day we talked to her, she was assigned to clean the bathrooms in exchange for her meal.“We’re far from a soup kitchen, we’re a fully operating restaurant,” Crosby explained. “A lot of people care about our community, a lot of people care about making our city a better city.”“Pay what you can” cafes are scattered across the United States. One organization, One World Everybody Eats, has tracked more than 50 independent cafes. However, there’s no way to track the real number since they are all different and no one regulates them.“We’ve actually helped mentor 60 different restaurants around the United States,” Tisha Steele, the Operations Officer at SAME Cafe, said. Steele now trains others how to run their business using this model.SAME Cafe was one of the first cafes to use this business model.“We never put an actual value on anything because we want people to come in and participate how they can,” she said. “We are the longest operating pay what you can model in the United States.”So how do these restaurants make money?“We try to get 65 percent of our revenue from paying customers. The other 35 percent is gonna come from grants. Both private and public grants,” Crosby said.Each cafe works a little bit differently, but they all have the same goal — healthy food accessibility. Recently, SAME Cafe has launched a food truck that mirrors their business model, but the truck can travel to different areas.“Access to food has become an issue, access to healthy food has become a bigger issue,” Crosby said.About 11 percent of households in the United States were food insecure at one point in 2018, according to the USDA.“When you look at how the cost of living is increasing so rapidly across the country but the pay scale isn’t really keeping up with that, one of the first things to go when you’re experiencing hardship is purchasing food,” Steele said.“It helps the people that can’t really pay for their meals, pay,” Valdez said. 3628
