BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday called for greater efforts to fulfill the energy-saving and emission reduction goals set out in the nation's 11th Five Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.Relevant departments must work harder to help enterprises close down old and polluting production facilities, he said at a State Council meeting.The departments must also suspend approval of new projects by enterprises failing to eliminate backward production capacity, he added.He also stressed efforts to curb the expansion of high energy-consuming industry, and emphasized strict control of exports of goods produced in an energy-inefficient way.Wen said energy-saving and emission reduction are priorities for the construction and transportation industries.Public institutions nationwide are expected to lower their energy consumption by 5 percent year on year in 2010, he added.More energy-conservation and emission-reduction publicity campaigns should be organized to promote the development of "green" consumption, he said.

BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety conditions remained grim as the number of work safety accidents remained large, illegal production still posed challenges and safety management was still loose, a senior official said on Sunday.Yang Yuanyuan, deputy chief of the State Administration of Work Safety, made the remarks at a forum on work safety in Beijing.In the first five months this year, 499 people were dead or missing in 36 major workplace accidents such as coal mine flood and gas explosion, a rise of nearly 40 percent from the same period a year ago, Yang said.Notably, five severe accidents, each with a death toll of more than 30, had happened so far this year, killing 181 lives, up nearly 70 percent year on year, he said.Yang noted the grave picture reflected poor enforcement of safety rules, and enterprises' mere pursuit of output in sacrifice of work safety.He said the government would make continuous efforts to bring those accidents under control.

BEIJING，April 4 (Xinhua) -- Frequent cold fronts in the coming 10 days would bring rainfalls to drought-hit Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Guizhou Province, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said Sunday.Light to moderate rains or showers are forecast in Guangxi, western Guangdong, southwestern Hubei, most parts of Guizhou, northwestern Yunnan and the northeastern part of the Western Sichuan Plateau on April 5, according to the CMA.But apart from its northwestern region, Yunnan province, worst hit by the current drought, would see virtually no precipitation in the next 10 days, the CMA said.The cold fronts would also cause temperature drops of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius in Inner Mongolia, northeast China, eastern part of northwest China and north China in the next three days.From April 7 to 9, northern part of China would expect windy and sandy weather.
