NANCHANG, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese commerce official on Sunday called on foreign investors to maintain their confidence in the country, promising China would make continuous efforts to improve its investment environment.Qian Fangli, deputy director of the Department of Foreign Investment Administration under the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), made the statement at a forum during the Expo Central China 2010 that opened Sunday.Although operation costs in China were rising because of higher labor and raw materials costs, foreign investment continued growing rapidly " because improvements in China's investment environment helped lower their investment costs and boost confidence," Qian said.Further, she noted that the Chinese government would continue to improve policies to encourage foreign investors. But she did not provide further details.In the first eight months of this year, foreign direct investment in China totaled 65.96 billion U.S. dollars, up 18.06 percent from one year earlier, according to MOC statistics.The Expo Central China, scheduled to run from Sept. 26 to Sept. 28, invited economists, entrepreneurs and officials to attend. The expo seeks to promote development in central China, which spans six provinces -- Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan.

CHENGDU, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese government official said Wednesday that major geological disasters and densely-populated regions would be the two main areas to monitor in the nation's efforts to guard against losses caused by such disasters.In the first 10 months of 2010, 2,909 people were dead or missing following over 30,000 recorded geological disasters, Xu Shaoshi, the Minister of Land and Resources, said at a meeting held Wednesday in Chengdu, capital city of southwestern Sichuan Province.Further, the number of people dead or missing during this period was five times higher than in the same period last year, said Xu.However, the majority of these victims, about 2,000 people, were killed or went missing after five major mud and rock slides which struck areas in west China's Guizhou, Gansu, and Yunnan provinces, Xu said.A massive mudslide triggered by rainstorms slammed Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province this past August, leaving 1,510 dead and 255 others missing."Our focus in loss prevention and control in the future will be to closely watch the major geological disasters and the areas with high human concentrations," said Xu.Xu also urged local governments to make specific plans regarding geological disaster prevention, improve the assessment and pre-cautionary monitoring mechanism, and beef up rescue and response systems in the event of an emergency.

BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Property prices in 70 major cities rose 9.3 percent in August year on year but were unchanged on a month-on-month basis from July, China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Friday.The year-on-year growth rate was one percentage point lower than the year-on-year growth rate in July, a statement on the NBS website said Friday.The year-on-year growth rate was the slowest in the past eight months this year.On a year-on-year basis, China's home prices rose 7.8 percent in December 2009, 9.8 percent in January 2010, 10.7 percent in February, 11.7 percent in March, 12.8 in April, 12.4 percent in May, 11.4 percent in June and 10.3 percent in JulyNew home prices rose 11.7 percent year on year in August, down 1.2 percentage points from July. New home prices in August were unchanged from July, too.Prices of second-hand homes rose 6.2 percent year on year in August, down 0.5 percentage points from July. Prices of second-hand homes in August increased on a month-on-month basis, up 0.1 percent from July.The Chinese government took measures in April to cool soaring home prices, including curbing lending to developers, limiting loans for third-home purchases and requiring higher down-payments for second-home purchases.

BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao's three-day U.N. visit this week has been fruitful as a major diplomatic effort at a time when new changes are emerging in the world economy and politics, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told reporters Friday.Wen was in New York from Tuesday to Thursday for the U.N. Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the general debate of the 65th session of the U.N. General Assembly, a summit of the U.N. Security Council member states, and a high-level discussion panel on AIDS and MDGs. He also met with U.S. President Barack Obama on bilateral ties and regional and world issues, calling for more cooperation.Yang said Wen made the New York trip as the world economy stabilized and started to show improvement but the recovery remained unbalanced and was still not solid.The international community has, in general, made significant progress on meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the minister said. he said, however, more imminent is the imbalance in international development and there are new challenges in international cooperation and development.The developing countries want more attention from the international community on the development issue, the minister said, and countries are ever more willing to promote peace, development and cooperation. BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao expressed his hope for a continuously improving Beijing Film Academy in a handwritten congratulatory letter to the leading Chinese film school, dubbed the "cradle of China's filmmakers", as it celebrated its 60th founding anniversary on Saturday.State Councilor Liu Yandong also sent a congratulatory letter to the school, urging it to significantly improve the artists' originality and the integrity of the school's students.The Beijing Film Academy is the only school on the Chinese mainland that specializes in the study of cinematography. Its long list of prominent graduates includes many of the country's most important directors and popular movie celebrities.Among these directors are Zhang Yimou, winner of the top award at the Venice Film Festival and Chen Kaige, the only Chinese mainland director ever to win the top prize at Festival de Cannes.
