TEHRAN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), on Tuesday visited the Confucius Institute at Tehran University, where he encouraged the Iranian students to constantly improve their Chinese level and become professional translators to make contributions to bilateral relations.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, told the Iranian students in the institute that he was moved by their strong interest in learning Chinese.While presenting some Chinese culture-experiencing equipment and books to the institute, Li, who is on an official visit to Iran, said he hopes the institute can use these books and equipment to promote its Chinese-teaching capacities.President of Tehran University Farhad Rahbar said the Confucius Institute has been playing a very important role in promoting Chinese teaching in Iran and boosting bilateral cultural cooperation, adding that the university is willing to further boost cultural and educational cooperation between the two countries.Li also watched performances about Chinese martial arts, poetry recitation and Chinese lion dance by the Iranian students in the Confucius Institute.After visiting Confucius Institute at Tehran University, Li went to the site of Metro line 4 in Tehran, which was jointly constructed by Iran and China.Li said the operation of the Metro line 4 is a product of the bilateral economic and trade exchanges, and he hopes that with joint efforts by the two sides the Metro line 4 can be turned into a line of friendship and cooperation between the two sides."I hope more achievements about our cooperation can be acquired in the future," he added.The Confucius Institute, the first in Iran, is co-founded by Yunnan University of China and Tehran University. BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese leaders on Wednesday met with visiting Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and discussed advancing bilateral relations.Wu Bangguo, chairman of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, the country's top legislature, said China and Italy both faced severe challenges and new opportunities as the international situation was undergoing profound changes.As the two countries shared a wide range of common interests, Wu said, it was in the fundamental interests of both peoples to develop China-Italy ties, which also worked for world peace and development.As this year saw the 40th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations, the two countries should maintain exchanges and dialogues at all levels, take care of each other's major concerns and deepen political trust, Wu said.Wu proposed all-round trade and economic cooperation, particularly in the fields of environment, science and technology, small and medium-sized businesses.Wu called on the two countries to step up communication and coordination under the China-EU and Asia-Europe frameworks and the international organizations like the United Nations and Group 20 in a bid to build a fair and reasonable international political and economic system.Napolitano, on his first visit to China as Italian head of state, said Italy appreciated China's remarkable economic and social development.The 85-year-old underscored Italy's commitment to developing ties with China, saying Italy and Europe could not develop without building closer links with China.Napolitano said Italy would take care of China's major concerns, enhance trade and economic cooperation and expand exchanges of visits.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China will launch a new national campaign to crack down on violations of intellectual property rights (IPRs) and on the production and distribution of fake and shoddy products.The decision was made at a regular meeting of the State Council Tuesday, which was presided over by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. The campaign will last for half a year, beginning from the end of October.The campaign will target pirated publications, software products, DVDs, designs and other products with IPRs, as well as violations of registered trademarks and patents, both at the production and distribution levels.The campaign will also enhance China's scrutiny over the import and export of fake goods and mete out stern punishment to businesses involved in the import and export of such goods.The campaign will target Internet piracy and the sale of pirated and fake goods via the Internet.Additionally, the State Council directed all government agencies to purchase only authorized software and their upgraded versions.At the Tuesday meeting, a draft regulation on gas use in urban areas was also passed in a bid to secure gas supplies and eliminate safety risks.

BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo told Japan early Sunday morning to make a "wise political resolution" and immediately release the Chinese fishermen and fishing boat its coast guard seized earlier this week.Dai made the remarks when he summoned the Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa in the wee hours. He was the highest-ranking Chinese official to make a response after the fishing boat and its crew were seized Tuesday in waters off the Diaoyu Islands and its captain was detained on Friday."Dai expressed solemnly (to the Japanese ambassador) the Chinese government's grave concerns and its serious and just position," said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.Dai warned Japan not to make a wrong judgement on the situation and urged it to make a "wise political resolution" and immediately release the fishermen and return the boat.The Japanese ambassador expressed that he would promptly report the Chinese position to his government, according to the statement.China decided Friday night to postpone a negotiation with Japan on the East China Sea issue, which had been scheduled for mid September, after a Japanese court ruled a 10-day detention through Sept.19 against the captain despite protests from China.Previously, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Friday summoned the Japanese ambassador and demanded Japan immediately and unconditionally release the boat and all the crew, saying China's determination to defend its sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands and the interests of the Chinese people was unswerving.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Friday night when announcing the postponement of the talks that the Japanese side has "ignored China's repeated solemn representations and firm opposition, and obstinately decided to put the Chinese captain under the so-called judiciary procedures."She said Japan's acts have violated the law of nations and basic international common sense, and are "ridiculous, illegal and invalid.""Japan will reap as it has sown, if it continues to act recklessly," Jiang warned.On Tuesday, two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and the Chinese fishing boat collided in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. No injuries were reported, but the fishing boat was then intercepted by the Japanese patrol.
