WASHINGTON — U.S. health officials have started two new studies to test various blood thinners to try to prevent strokes, heart attacks, blood clots and other complications in COVID-19 patients.Doctors increasingly are finding blood clots throughout the bodies of many people who died from COVID-19 along with signs of damage they do to kidneys, lungs, blood vessels, the heart and other organs.National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Director Gary Gibbons says that hospitals have been giving seriously ill patients anti-clotting drugs to try to prevent this, but “quite frankly, we didn’t know how best to treat it” in terms of which drugs or doses to use and at what stage of illness.The National Institutes of Health will coordinate a study in hospitalized patients comparing low and regular doses of the blood thinner heparin. The study will involve more than 100 sites around the world participating in a research effort with various governments, drug companies, universities and others to speed coronavirus therapies.A second study in COVID-19 patients not sick enough to need hospitalization will test various strategies against placebo pills: baby aspirin or low or regular doses of the anti-clotting drug apixaban, sold as Eliquis in the United States. The goal there is preventing blood clots or hospitalization.A third study starting later will test blood thinners for people who have recovered and no longer test positive for the coronavirus. Neighbors tell 10News that a husband was arrested for shooting his wife and the two had a troubled history. A suspect in this case was arrested Saturday night by members of the San Diego Sheriff's Homicide Unit. Deputies report that he has been identified as fifty-seven-year-old Andrew Thomas Smith of Vista and he has been booked for murder at the Vista Detention Facility. He is being held without bail. The victim's family has been notified of her death. Deputies report that she has been positively identified as Jean Moore Smith, a fifty-nine-year-old resident of Vista and she was Andrew’s wife. The case against Kevin Clinesmith is likely to be cheered by President Donald Trump and his supporters who've alleged wrongdoing in the FBI’s investigation into whether Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russia. A watchdog report accused Clinesmith of altering an email to say former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page was not a source for another government agency. “The fact is they spied on my campaign and they got caught,” Trump said at the White House on Friday.But the five-page charging document is limited in scope and does not allege criminal wrongdoing by anyone other than Clinesmith, nor does it offer evidence to support Trump’s assertions that the Russia probe was tainted by widespread political bias in the FBI. (KGTV) – A head-on collision at a Vista intersection left one driver dead and sent three others to the hospital, San Diego County sheriff’s officials said.The collision involving two vehicles happened just before 11 p.m. Thursday on West Vista Way at Copper Avenue.According to sheriff’s officials, a black Infiniti sedan was traveling westbound on West Vista Way when it collided head-on into a blue Chevrolet hatchback that was traveling eastbound on West Vista Way.The Chevrolet’s 51-year-old male driver died at the scene, while a passenger in the car was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.The Infiniti’s 22-year-old female driver was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to officials. A passenger in the Infiniti suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.The cause of the crash is under investigation, but officials believe alcohol was a factor in the collision. 935
