(KGTV) - Three weeks after violence ripped through La Mesa, small businesses continue supporting one another, working toward recovery."It broke our heart when a lot of the glass was busted," Mike Miller said. He recently moved to La Mesa with his wife, Neng, charmed by the small town feel.The looting and destruction the night of May 30th after a rally against injustice sent a shockwave through the community.Leslie Thomas said she watched the horror from her balcony, just a couple blocks away. "We could see the flames and everything coming up, and we didn't sleep much that night but the next morning we got up and we said, 'you know what? We live here, what can we do to fix everything?'"That mantra reflected by hundreds who showed up that Sunday morning to help.As Leslie walked with her husband down the street they noticed "the liquor store on the corner down there, we walked by and we were like, 'Your windows aren't blown out!' and he was like, 'Everyone who knows me, who knows that I'm part of this neighborhood came out and protected my windows and I told them to go home and they wouldn't.' But he was out there giving water to everybody [Sunday] and he didn't question why he was doing it. People were giving out free coffee."A showing of sheer humanity.La Mesa neighbors aren't surprised to hear that generosity is still being extended weeks later.La Mesa Glass replaced the windows at Play It Again Sports June 11th and Bohemian House Saturday for free.The owners of Bohemian House said they were incredibly grateful for their gift, helping them get back to business.10News reached out to La Mesa Glass to ask how many businesses they have supported during this time and have not heard back yet.Neighbors said even the artwork painted over plywood boards standing guard in front of many La Mesa businesses were uplifting. Words and images of hope reminded them how strong and close their community is."I don't think this is going to change us in any way, I actually think it's going to make us a stronger neighborhood," Thomas said, defining La Mesa Strong.Some of the boards have come down but there are still more than a dozen businesses with plywood protecting their broken windows. 2229

(KGTV) - People who live on Louisa Drive in La Mesa say they're living in fear every day because of a rise in crime connected to two homes they suspect are drug houses.The residents are asking the San Diego County Sheriff's Department to increase patrols in their neighborhood and do more to enforce the law at those homes."I have kids, and it's just not a safe place anymore," said one resident, who asked to remain anonymous because that person fears retaliation from neighbors. "You never know what's going to happen."According to one sergeant from the Rancho San Diego sheriff's substation, there are two homes on Louisa Drive that have people living in them with a criminal history. Right now, deputies are investigating those homes to see if any criminal activity is going on.The sergeant says there are other homes around the corner from Louisa Drive that are also under investigation.A search of crimemapping.com shows seven reported crimes in the last six months on Louisa Drive, most of them drug-related. Last January, 10News reported on one woman on the street who woke up to a pair of strange men standing in her bedroom."The concept of someone in your house while you're sleeping, it's startling," said her daughter, who also found her room ransacked.Neighbors also complain of people passed out in the street, walking through their yards at all hours of the day and night, and leaving garbage in their yards.The sheriff's department says people can file requests for extra patrol at certain hours. They try to accommodate those requests depending on staffing levels and other, more urgent calls. They also say that people who live in the neighborhood should call 911 every time they see something. 1736

LAKEWOOD, Ohio — When she heard Jimmy Adkins was running his own taxi service in Ohio she immediately warned her friends and family."We want people to know that he's out there," said a witness who did not want to be identified.That's because the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department says Adkins is a registered sex offender. One that's been convicted twice, in his most recent crime involving a young relative."My niece was living with him and that's when he made the attempt to have sex with her," said the witness.Adkins is running a service called Lakewood Smart Taxi.He needs a license to run his service, but he doesn't have one. Just last month, he got arrested for transporting passengers without it.But even if he applied for that license, there's no way Adkins could get one."That's the thing, within the city's ordinance, they require that you have a clean record," said Derrick Russell, a consultant of Ace Taxi, a legitimate taxi company in Cleveland.Five years ago Russell fired Adkins because of his criminal record."I was shocked, I've done investigations for insurance companies for a number of years and major companies, I had not seen a record like that," said Russell.He says Lakewood Smart Taxi isn't the first of its kind."Anyone can put a magnet on the side of their car and call themselves a taxi because unfortunately, the regulations are really gray in that area, but the other thing is there is no enforcement," he said.The family of Adkins' victims is advising against getting in his car."Lord knows what he can do, and it's just not safe, it's not safe, you know what I mean there could be anything that could happen," said the unidentified witness.Adkins was contacted multiple times for comment but never called back. 1765

LAKE ALFRED, Fla. -- A Polk County, Florida family is outraged after they say their 7-year-old was forced to scrub school floors with a toothbrush as punishment.The elementary student reportedly misbehaved last week at Lake Alfred Elementary, when her teacher sent the student next door for "corrective action."According to the family, the 7-year-old was told to scrub the floors with a toothbrush.They also claim teachers told her to clean the entire floor, and when she was done she was told to then clean the counters.Family members say she was forced to do this throughout the day and was not able to participate in regular classroom activities. The family says they were not made aware of the misbehavior or the punishment their daughter received. LA MESA (KGTV) -- It was a frustrating flight for one mother in La Mesa, who said an airline would not allow her to sit next to her toddler without forking over extra cash.Aliss, who declined to use her last name, said she chose seats together when she booked her ticket through a third-party website. Aliss and her son, Kai, were travelling from Providence, Rhode Island back to San Diego with a layover in Minneapolis. When she got to the airport in Providence, her seat on her Sun Country Airlines flight was not next to her child.“I would have never booked a flight where we couldn’t sit together,” Aliss said. She said her options were limited and that the representative with the airline said she could charge her a fee.“I can’t pay that. What else can we do? And she said, well for I can move you guys in a row front and back of each other. I said that doesn’t help my problem. He’s still not sitting next to me,” Aliss said. She said she told the airline representative not to charge her the money, but she was charged anyway. She said she did not get help from anyone with the airline, including the flight attendant. “She said no, you’re on your own. You’ll just have to argue with people,” Aliss said. Fortunately, a grandmother ended up giving up her seat so Aliss could sit with Kai. That was only the beginning of her problems. From Minneapolis to San Diego, Aliss’ flight was delayed. At first, it was only three hours.“No big deal,” she said. She tried keeping Kai entertained and saw many other parents in a similar situation. The three hour delay became much longer with passengers unclear on when they were going to leave. “It was confusing, frustrating,” Aliss said. She said they were promised 0 vouchers for the long delay. Aliss said their 3:10 p.m. flight finally left around 12:30 a.m. Team 10 contacted Sun Country Airlines, who apologized for what happened. In a statement, a spokesperson told Team 10: “This was not the level of service we aim to provide, as it is our policy that children always be seated with an adult on the itinerary at no cost. We have followed up with our airport staff on this error to ensure our policy is being carried out correctly. We have issued a full refund to the passenger for the fees incurred at the counter related to the seat assignment. We were also able to ensure two seats were assigned next to one another on her return flight. Our team has resent the 0 vouchers from the flight delay to the email we have on file, and we are adding an additional 0 voucher for the inconvenience.”Aliss said it was a lesson for her to be prepared and to, “be wise with who you spend your money with.” A few years ago, Congress passed the Families Flying Together act, which was supposed to keep parents and children together on planes.
