SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man was arrested Saturday after allegedly assaulting an elderly woman at a Central Coast beach parking lot in San Luis Obispo, law officials said.Morro Bay Police Officers responded to a disturbance call at around 1 p.m. at the Morro Rock parking lot on Coleman Drive, authorities said.Witnesses told officers that the suspect assaulted an elderly woman and knocked her to the ground. Numerous people witnessed the attack and went to help the victim, according to police.Officials said the woman was treated by first responders for moderate injuries.In a press release, officials said Brian Robert Sprinkle, 39, of La Jolla, "was participating in a surf competition when he exited the water and assaulted the woman without provocation."Sprinkle was booked in the San Luis Obispo County Jail on felony charges of elder abuse and battery, according to Morro Bay police.Officers also found a firearm with Sprinkle's property and seized it.It is believed the suspect was under the influence of marijuana and hallucinogenic drugs, police said in a statement.Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Morro Bay Police Department (805) 772-6225.While police say Sprinkle was taking part in the Big, Bad and Ugly surf competition, surf contest organizers tell KSBY News he was not registered with the contest and is not affiliated with any of the surf clubs that participated.ABC 10News affiliate KSBY News contributed to this report. 1497

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego native made history at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, becoming the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish what many consider the world's most grueling endurance race. Roderick Sewell crossed the finish line of the 140-mile triathlon race in 16 hours and 26 minutes and immediately embraced his mother. The two lived in San Diego homeless shelters when Sewell was growing up."It's amazing to see how far we've come in 20 years," said the 27-year-old.It's even more amazing when you consider that Sewell had never completed a marathon before Saturday's competition. The Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 114-mile bike ride, and ends with a 26.2-mile marathon.On top of that, Sewell had only six months to train after receiving an invitation from the Ironman organization."I had no bike. I didn't own one" until a few months before the competition, said Sewell. Sewell raced with strategy help from his longtime friend and mentor Rudy Garcia-Tolson. Garcia-Tolson became the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish any Ironman 10 years ago."Back when I first met Roderick, he was about 8 years old. He was actually petrified of the water," Garcia-Tolson said. "Whatever life is throwing at you, mental or physical challenges, you have to fight and get over those and strive for better."Sewell, whose legs were amputated at 2 years old because he was born without tibias, credits much of his success to the San Diego-based Challenged Athletes Foundation. He was introduced to the group at 8 years old."I didn't do any kind of sports. I wasn't very physically active," he said. "And then I started with them and got started in every sport I could."CAF gave Sewell his first running blades at a time when he and his mother were living in homeless shelters."If I can inspire someone, it's a blessing," he said. "When people come up to me and tell me their stories, to me their stories seem more mind-blowing than my own," Sewell added. 2009

Ricochet and Iverson were side-by-side when Ricochet decided to jump on the surf board.Since that day, Ricochet has surfed with and helped hundreds of kids, people with disabilities, wounded warriors and veterans with PTSD.Now, Ricochet is part of an organization that helps kids and adults with autism, special needs and disabilities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego police officer shot a man during a response to an emergency call in a Rancho Penasquitos neighborhood Wednesday night, police officials said.SDPD officials said the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in the 8500 block of Celtic Court, near Donaker Street. Officials confirmed officers were called to the area after a 911 call was made regarding a domestic violence incident.An SDPD official at the scene said, "The dispatcher could overhear the reporting party and the male on the radio call. She could hear the male talking about wanting to be shot by police officers and there was indication there was firearms inside of the house.”Police said when officers arrived, they found a 61-year-old man and his wife in front their home. When officers approached, the man “produced a revolver from his waistband” and started to draw the weapon towards officers. Officials said one officer fired a single round from his service weapon, striking the man in the torso.The injured man, identified on Friday as Richard Young, was breathing and talking while being taken to a local hospital, police said. Young underwent emergency surgery early Thursday morning, and police said Friday that Young "remains in a local hospital under guard."According to the department, officers recovered the man’s gun at the scene.The officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave in light of the investigation, which is being conducted by SDPD’s Homicide Unit.Officials identified the officer involved as Timothy Breck, a five-year veteran of the Department assigned to Northeastern Division.SDPD officials said: “When the Homicide Unit completes their investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions.The Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation to determine if there were any policy violations, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers.The Community Review Board on Police Practices will conduct a review of the incident and provide any appropriate recommendations.The Federal Bureau of Investigations and the United States Attorney’s Office will also be monitoring the investigation.” 2282

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A stunning photo of a female surfer riding the waves was taken at sunset in Cardiff, and the photographer who took the image is hoping to find her.Los Angeles-based photographer Robin Kerr is inspired by nature. She has been taking nature and wildlife photos since she was a child.“My dad lent me his camera on our family vacation to Montana in 1989, ever since then I’ve had the bug,” said Kerr.Kerr said she had visited some amazing places to take photos, but her trip to San Diego in 2018 is one of her favorites.“I took a trip down to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to see all of the wildlife there," said Kerr. “It had rained on and off all day. I was thinking it might be a really great sunset, something dramatic with the clouds.”Kerr made her way to Cardiff just before it got too dark to snap pictures of the beach. At that moment, she took a stunning photo of a female surfer gliding on the water, in front of a golden sunset.“You can tell she’s just experiencing so much joy in the photo, doing what she loves," Kerr told ABC 10News.Kerr said while taking photos of other objects on the beach, she missed meeting the surfer. She posted the picture, and another zoomed-in image of the woman on her social media accounts, hoping to find her. She had no luck. Nearly two years later, she is resuming her search.“I came across that picture again; I thought man it would be so great to actually find her," Kerr said.Kerr said she has not been able to retake a photo like this.
