SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Lucky Duck Foundation announced a million region-wide homeless employment and jobs training initiative Friday, aiming to hire and train people experiencing homelessness to secure long-term employment.An anonymous donor gave the million gift in grants to expand existing programs and launch new ones, including culinary skills, homeless outreach, community beautification work, youth support services and intensive job training.The donor asked the foundation to focus on high-impact programs to help people on the streets.FACING IT TOGETHER: How San Diego is working to end homelessness"The Lucky Duck Foundation is honored to work with our generous donor to establish a results-oriented, best-in-class strategy for reducing homelessness," said Stephanie Kilkenny, the foundation's co-founder and president. "The million gift allows us to deploy much-needed funding into the region to enable individuals to receive on-the-job training and long-term employment with the ultimate goal of securing housing to break the cycle of homelessness."Kilkenny said the foundation was anticipating more than 500 people to benefit from the new and expanded programs. According to university officials, 31.5 percent of SDSU's first-year undergraduate students are members of at least one underrepresented minority.The .9 million grant is the second-largest the school has ever received, after a million federal grant the university received in 2014 to expand to the country of Georgia.NIH is expected to administer the grant over five years to fund construction of the HealthLINK Center, multiple research projects and annual seed funding for four researchers pursuing pilot projects."This a wonderful recognition of the faculty's excellence in health disparities research, and a significant opportunity to build on that excellence so that SDSU can remain a leader in this field for years to come," said Stephen Welter, SDSU's vice president for research.SDSU expects to work with local health care agencies and providers like the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, Family Health Centers of San Diego and Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo Inc. through the HealthLINK Center. The university's branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research also ranked 42nd among the top biomedical science non-governmental organizations in the country.The rankings come from Nature Index, which tracks high-quality scientific research, studies and articles and the institutions with which they're associated.
