SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two teenage boys from Arizona were hailed as heroes after diving off Sunset Cliffs to save the lives of two people who were drowning on Friday evening. It was a happy ending scene, captured by local photographer, Jim Grant on Friday evening as lifeguards hoisted up a young girl off Sunset Cliffs."It just could have been a tragic event," Grant said on Saturday.He says the photo he took would have been a somber one if two teenage boys did not dive in to save the girls before lifeguards got there. Meet 15-year-old Jake Watson and 16-year-old Zachary Haugen."We've been best friends since third grade," Haugen said.The two boys from Arizona were vacationing in San Diego for the July 4th weekend."We said, 'Alright, let's go explore around,' and we heard about this place called Sunset Cliffs," Watson said.They say they were soaking in the beautiful sunset Friday evening. But when the boys looked down, they saw two ladies in trouble. A six-grade girl and a family friend were splashing around near the reef. Haugen, a licensed lifeguard for the City of Phoenix, knew exactly what was going on."I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, they're drowning.' So that's when I just knew I had to go in." Haugen recalled.They say the girl was climbing on top of the young woman's head, just to breathe. Haugen first pulled the girl off the woman, but the high surf put his own life at risk."I looked up at Jake," Haugen said. "He's like, 'Do you need help?' And I'm just shaking my head, and that's when he was able to jump in and go after them."At that point, Watson, an avid fisherman and swimmer, dove in to lift the girl."I put her on my back and pressed up, and just kind of rolled her off my shoulder, onto the landing," Watson said.They then pulled the injured young woman up. All this happened in under five minutes before San Diego Lifeguards took over."We were like, 'What just happened?' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UC San Diego was granted a temporary use permit by the city council in National City to use El Toyon Park to conduct a clinical vaccination trial.The permit is good from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31, 2022, with a rental rate of ,000 per month.A spokesperson for UCSD Health said the site would be for the Janssen clinical trial, which is still awaiting final approval locally; more details could not be confirmed Friday.The vaccination clinic would be set up in a parking lot at the park in National City, one of the communities heavily impacted by COVID-19.Community advocates have been working with UCSD to inform potential participants in the South Bay about vaccine trials.“The Chicano Federation has been working with a lot of our underserved communities, but also some of the hardest-hit communities by COVID-19, particularly the Latino communities,” said Roberto Alcantar, Chief Strategy Officer for the Chicano Federation. “One of the hot topics to come out of this is the issue with vaccinations.”Alcantar said concerns were raised over a different trial that was set to begin in the South Bay earlier this month; it was later put on hold. But UCSD quickly worked with the federation to ensure residents in the trial areas would get the information needed to make informed decisions if they wanted to participate.“We’re happy to see that UCSD is taking the lead in National City, and it’s not some other group because we know that they’re doing the best that they can to provide the right information,” he said. “If there are trials that are happening out there that are unethical or targeting people of color with incentives, we’ll call them out.”UCSD researchers previously said they hoped to focus on recruiting people for the trials from underserved communities with the highest rate of COVID-19.The San Diego Latino Health Coalition, which includes the Chicano Federation and several other nonprofit organizations, will continue community outreach efforts before the trial officially begins.“We’re very effective at getting the information out, and people are receptive to us because they trust us, they know us, we’ve been working with them for decades,” said Alcantar.There’s no word on when the trial will start, but soon there may be three clinical trials running simultaneously with two focused primarily on the South Bay. 2361

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Uber has filed paperwork with the FAA to start testing drones in San Diego for food delivery.The petition seeks a series of exemptions that would allow Uber to use drones to transport food in the city of San Diego.The FAA recently granted its first air carrier certification to a drone company, Wing Aviation, which will begin testing in Blacksburg, Virginia.In Uber’s application, it said it would be using the AirRobot 200 drone, a hexa-copter which is larger than typical drones used by videographers.It says the drones would not fly higher than 400 feet and have a range of 3.5 miles.There is currently a public comment period on the FAA’s website.An FAA spokesperson told 10News, “we will thoroughly evaluate all comments we receive, as well as the petitioner’s proposal and associated safety measures, before making a decision.”Uber declined to comment for this story. 901

Doors to the "Hydro Station" opened Thursday morning in Chula Vista.School leaders say this is a new way to get kids excited about learning about jobs in the water industry. The Hydro Station will host learning exhibits and hands-on activities to introduce students to the ecological cycle of water, water conservation, water quality, and more. "Human beings need water," says Matt Tessier with the Chula Vista Elementary School District.
