YUSHU, Qinghai, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in northwest China's Qinghai Province has risen to 760, rescuers said Friday. The latest statistics show that 243 people were missing and 11,477 injured, 1,174 severely, said a spokesman with the rescue headquarters in in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in southern Qinghai.A total of 4,200 injured people have been discharged from hospital, he added.Rescuers search for survivors at a collapsed building in Gyegu Town of Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu, northwest China's Qinghai Province, April 15, 2010. Thousands of rescuers fought altitude sickness, chilly weather, strong winds and frequent aftershocks Thursday to dig through rubble and reach survivors of a strong earthquake that has left 760 dead in northwest China. At least 7,093 rescuers were carrying out search and rescue operation in the Gyegu Town, the seat of the Yushu prefecture government, according to previous statements from the headquarters.More rescuers were en route to the town that is close to the epicenter and home to 100,000 residentsThe quake struck the Yushu County in the Yushu prefecture at 7:49 a.m. Wednesday with a depth of about 33 km. The epicenter was calculated to be 33.1 north and 96.7 east, the China Earthquake Networks Center reported.A series of aftershocks have been reported so far, with the biggest being at 6.3 magnitude. The epicenter is at the Rima Village in the Shanglaxiu Township, a pasturing and sparsely-populated area about 50 km west of Gyegu and about 800 km away from the provincial capital Xining. Many people are still buried in the debris as more than 85 percent of houses in Gyegu, mostly made of mudbrick and wood, had collapsed.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Almost 1,000 rescuers were racing the clock through the drizzle Monday to pump water and reach the 153 people trapped underground in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province.Altogether 261 workers were in the pit of Wangjialing Coal Mine, which was under construction, when underground water gushed in at about 1:40 p.m. Sunday. Although 108 were lifted safely to the ground, 153 others were trapped in the shaft. Rescuers carry pipes at the site of a flooding accident of Wangjialing Coal Mine, sitting astride Xiangning County of Linfen City and Hejin City of Yuncheng City, in north China's Shanxi Province, on March 29, 2010."Currently, more than 970 people are participating in the rescue operation," said Liu Dezheng, a spokesman of the rescue headquarters and deputy director of the General Office with the Shanxi Provincial Work Safety Committee, at a news conference late Monday."If everything goes smoothly, with the installation of two more high-power pumps, it is expected that 650 cubic meters of water can be pumped out of the shaft per hour tonight, and 2,000 cubic meters per hour tomorrow," he said.Previously, six pumps had been used to pump up to 300 cubic meters of water per hour around the clock. But Liu also pointed out that complicated conditions underground could hamper the operation."The coal mine has a high concentration of gas. Rescuers have to face the danger of toxic gas, while fighting the water," he said. "We must guard against secondary disasters."Therefore, rescuers had started to drill a hole and open a drainage channel in the shaft to divert water from the flooded tunnel to another unaffected tunnel, he said."The channel, with a length of more than 100 meters, is expected to be completed by 6 p.m. Tuesday," he added.Local authorities have dispatched more than 40 medical workers and 20 ambulances to stand by at the shaft entrance.President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have ordered local authorities to spare no effort in the rescue operation. Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang is at the site to oversee the operation. Most of those trapped were migrant workers from Shanxi, Hebei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces, rescuers said.Xu Shuwei was among the last group of workers to board a lift to escape the flood Sunday afternoon."Those trapped are my workmates, I just want to try my best to save them," said Xu, 40, who helped rescuers carry equipment throughout the night. The mine, which straddles Xiangning County, of Linfen City, and Hejin City, of Yuncheng City, covers about 180 square kilometers. The mining zone was estimated to have more than 2.3 billion tonnes of coal reserves, including 1.04 billion tonnes of proven reserves, according to the company's official website. The mine, affiliated with the state-owned Huajin Coking Coal Co. Ltd., is a major project approved by the provincial government. It is expected to produce 6 million tonnes of coal annually once in operation.Earlier this month, 32 workers were killed in a similar accident when underground water flooded a mine being built in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. One worker died after being lifted to the ground and 31 others were presumed dead two weeks after the accident happened on March 1.Rescue work, which took 14 days and involved 20,384 people, was halted on March 14 when those trapped were believed to have no chance of survival.

WASHINGTON, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Forty-six U.S. business executives, led by U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, began a 10-day trip to China Saturday to promote clean energy technologies, which in Locke's words, will be a win-win scenario for both countries. The delegation, the first cabinet-level trade mission of the Obama Administration, will make stops in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing."We hope to have various signing ceremonies throughout the trip," Locke said before departing the U.S.A MISSION TO PROMOTE EXPORTS OF U.S. CLEAN ENERGY TECHNOLOGIESThe mission comes on the heels of the Obama administration's National Export Initiative, which seeks to double American exports over the next five years -- supporting some two million new jobs in the process.According to the U.S. Commerce Department, the mission aims to promote exports of leading U.S. technologies related to clean energy, energy efficiency, and electric energy storage, transmission, and distribution."Energy is a 6 trillion dollar market. And green energy is the fastest growing sector. The race to develop the new technologies the world will one day rely on is a race that this nation and all developed nations must engage in," Locke told reporters at a press conference Wednesday. The top U.S. trade official said the increased trade with China, especially cooperation on clean energy sector, benefited both countries."Every American should know that when a U.S. clean energy company finds success abroad, it creates more jobs here at home in the United States," Locke said. "In fact, some of the companies on this trip produce over 90 percent of the components for the products that they sell overseas right here in the United States."The trade mission was an opportunity for win-win scenarios for American companies, American workers and the people and the governments of China, he said.ECONOMIC AND TRADE FRICTIONS TO CONTINUE AS COOPERATION DEEPENSAccording to statistics released by the Chinese government, bilateral trade between China and the United States grew 9 percent a year in the past five years.Currently, the U.S. stands as China's second largest trading partner, the second largest export market and the sixth largest source of imports. China is the second largest trading partner of the U.S., its third biggest export market and its number one source of imports. While the two countries enjoy enormous cooperation opportunities in many areas, the U.S. Commerce Department has imposed a series of tariffs on Chinese products and many Chinese companies complain they have been affected by the rising protectionist measures taken by U.S. government.Locke rebuffed these complaints, saying he had explained to Chinese officials it was not the United States government that brought the cases."It's not the policy of the United States government to file these cases. These cases are filed by companies within the United States who feel that the actions of a company from another country (were affecting them)," he told Xinhua. He also noted that less than 3 percent of all goods sold from China into the United States were subject to duties in question."So 97 percent of all the goods coming from China are without any type of penalties or dumping duties or counter-veiling subsidies," Locke said. "We should not focus on the number of complaints."Many Chinese officials have argued the U.S. export control against China has already limited their access to the Chinese market. They believe the achievement of trade balance between the two countries rests not with restricting China's exports to the U.S., but with increasing U.S. exports to China.Secretary Locke echoed the opinion. While he insisted that national security should be the U.S.'s overriding objective, he also admitted "there are so many things now that are on the various control lists that really should not be on the control list."He also told reporters the U.S. government was reviewing its high-tech control systems and the result would be announced in the next few months. He said the current system had strong protections for both sophisticated technologies that could affect U.S. national security, and technologies that were readily available from around the world, which really made no sense?"So we need to reduce those restrictions and make it easier for those items to be exported," Locke said.

SHENYANG, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has encouraged local governments and farmers in northeast China to expand grain production to stabilize the nation's food supply.Hui made the call during an inspection tour to Liaoning Province, a major rice-producing province in northeast China, from Friday to Saturday. The grain planting situation this summer is challenging as persistent cold weather since last winter has ravaged major production zones in the north.Hui said northeast China is a key rice production area. With good quality, rice produced here has a great market demand. Hui encouraged farmers to plant more rice and expand production capacity.According to the Ministry of Agriculture, northeast China's grain output accounted for about one fifth of the country's total food yield last year.Grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.

JERUSALEM, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese special envoy on Middle East affairs Wu Sike held talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Sunday, urging Israel and the Palestinians work together to push forward the Middle East peace process.Wu said the Middle East peace process is at a crucial moment now, as Israel and the Palestinians have entered indirect talks. China welcomes this concrete step, which broke the year-long deadlock in the peace process, and hopes that the two sides seize this opportunity to reach real progress, he said.China sees significance of mutual trust and flexibility in the talks, and asks Israel and the Palestinians to treat the negotiations seriously and put good faiths in them, stopping provocations and creating favorable conditions for fruitful talks. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman (R) meets with Wu Sike, China's Special Envoy on the Middle East, in Jerusalem, June 6, 2010.As to the recent Gaza aid flotilla incident, which caused several casualties, Wu told Lieberman that China hopes Israel carry out UN resolutions in a comprehensive and serious manner, and lift the blockade on the Gaza Strip.China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, will communicate and coordinate with all concerned parties, including Israel, to play a constructive role in promoting the Middle East peace process, Wu said. For his part, Lieberman said Israel is willing to work with the Palestinians to push the proximity talks into direct negotiations, and reach concrete results from them.Israel is satisfied with the development of Israeli-Chinese relationship and appreciates the active role China is playing on the Middle East affairs, said the foreign minister, adding that he hopes both countries will keep close contact with each other and deepen the bilateral relations.
