SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Girls Empowerment Camp put on by the San Diego Fire Department started Saturday despite some controversy a few months ago. The camp teaches girls what it takes to be a firefighter. The girls learn how to pull hoses, climb ladders, and climb out of windows just like firefighters do on the job. In February, attorney Al Rava sent a letter to the city attorney on behalf of his client, Rich Allison. The letter claimed that the camp was unwelcoming to boys solely based on their sex. RELATED: Girls empowerment camp rescheduled after abrupt cancellationThe camp was canceled, but days later Mayor Faulconer issued a statement saying the camp would go on. The girls are thankful the camp is back on. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 79-year-old woman struck while crossing a Mira Mesa intersection is expected to recover from her injuries, San Diego Police said Monday. The woman was walking north in the crosswalk of Mira Mesa Boulevard and Black Mountain Road about 5 a.m. when she was struck by a male driver, police said. Officers reported the woman suffered a fractured pelvis, open fracture to the right tibia, and head injuries. She was taken to the hospital. The crash shattered the driver’s windshield. He was not hurt. Traffic backed up for several hours during the morning commute for the investigation. Police have not yet determined who was at fault. 659

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Chula Vista woman is keeping vigil after her parents holiday vacation turned into nightmare, when both become sick with COVID-19.Jose and Gloria Arellano had a dilemma. Their daughter Joselyn says they had airfare credits from a postponed trip to southern Mexico but the deadline to use the credits was about the run out."They had their trip postpone the trip two or three times. They didn't want to lose the money, so they decided to go this time.On November 11, they flew out from Tijuana to Oaxaca for a two-week vacation. Apprehensive about rising COVID-19 rates, they went prepared with goggles and masks. Gloria also had a face shield. Once there, they did a little sightseeing. When they were near anybody, they wore masks."Their main thing is to try food. They were mostly at restaurants. They were also at the beach a lot," said Joselyn.About six days into their trip, Jose, 56, became sick."For him, it was coughing. He has asthma, and it just got into his lungs," said Joselyn.A few days later, Gloria, 54, also became ill. They went to a local hospital, received COVID-19 tests, and tested positive. Jose got sicker and the family contracted at air ambulance to fly him back to San Diego two days before Thanksgiving.Jose, a former investigator with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office and former Navy, is being treated at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla."He's been stabile, on a ventilator and taking antibiotics," said Joselyn.Joselyn calls her father's situation a helpless waiting game. Her mother ended up in a hospital in Oaxaca, intubated for several days, before being released Monday. Right now, she's quarantining at an Airbnb in Oaxaca."It's a vacation, for them, they’ll regret forever," said Joselyn.Joselyn is trying to stay optimistic with so much uncertainty about her father. She is certain about one thing. There will be no vacations in her family's near future."It's not worth it. It's not worth the risk," said Joselyn.Joselyn's brother flew to Oaxaca to help their mother. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A burglary victim is hoping doorbell camera video will help track down some thieves who hunt down garage remotes before raiding the garage. Ring video shows a man on his stomach, around 2 a.m. Saturday, in Curtis Both's driveway off Morena Boulevard. In his hand is Both's garage door opener."My car was ransacked. The remote was in the center console," said Both.The man in the video likely pushed the button for the garage, just slightly. "He wanted to peer in to see what was there," said Both.Moments later, the garage door is heard opening. The man then walks in, before eventually leaving. About two hours later, that man is back with a friend. A camera mounted inside the garage shows them collecting items from the garage."Horrible. A complete violation," said Both.Airsoft gear, ski equipment, power tools, a pricey road bike were among the items that would vanish.A week earlier, about a mile away, a man with a similar backpack and high socks was recorded putting down the backpack and getting on his knees to shine a flashlight at a garage door. Soon after, he's seen heading across the street. That light inside Matt Friend's SUV comes on. Tucked in the door panel is the garage remote. Eventually, Friend's garage door open is seen opening."We were sleeping inside, with two sons in the other room, two- and three-year-old boys and my wife is pregnant so it's disheartening to think somebody is on our premise without us knowing," said Friend.The thief would get away with several items, including friend's ,000 Intense mountain bike."Some of the violation feels like they're just coming to our neighborhood and treating it like a department store, and they have no fear," said Both.Both victims say they almost always lock their car doors and aren't sure how the thief broke into their vehicles. 1840

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 26-year-old was hospitalized late Saturday night after being struck by an SUV while riding his motorcycle.Police say the man was crossing an intersection at 5th Avenue and Ash Street around 9:41 when 82-year-old Herbert Green ran a red light and hit the 26-year-old.The rider flew off the bike when police say he hit a parked car with his head. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officers were able to catch up to and arrest Green several blocks away from the scene of the crash. 545
