AVILA BEACH, Calif. — Officials say two women are lucky to be alive after a humpback whale capsized their kayak as they paddled in the ocean on Monday.The incident, which occurred near the Cal Poly Pier, was caught on video by multiple people in the area.Julie McSorley says she went out Sunday and took pictures of the whales and convinced her friend to go kayaking with her on Monday.McSorley says there were a lot of birds and fish in the area, so people had their phones at the ready. She said she and her friend could see whales off in the distance.Seconds later, one of the whales was right underneath them.While some video footage makes it appear as the women went inside the whale's mouth, McSorley says their kayak just overturned, and they were thrown underwater.Video shows McSorley screamed before going underwater for about five or six seconds.Humpback whales are considered an endangered species, and marine mammal experts say they can be unpredictable and dangerous. Experts say people should keep about a football field's worth of space between themselves and the large mammals, when possible.The Port San Luis Harbor Patrol says enforcement can be difficult. Boaters can think they've left a whale plenty of space, but the mammals move quickly.The whales have been making appearances close to shore between Morro Bay and Avila Beach in recent days. As students begin to head back to the classroom – either virtually or in person – this month begins the most uncertain school year in recent memory.While some public health experts have expressed apprehension about reopening schools, President Donald Trump gave a full-throated defense for bringing back students into classroom full time this fall. Trump hosted a group of educators and school administrators at the White House on Wednesday.Amid Trump’s effort to reopen schools, the CDC released updated guidance last month that emphasizes reopening schools. The new guidance contradicts previous guidance, which recommended closing schools during periods of substantial community transmission.The updated guidance said that extended school closures are harmful to children and can lead to severe learning loss, and the need for in-person instruction is particularly important for students with heightened behavioral needs.During an event with educators on Wednesday, Trump said not only should students return to the classroom, but he decried hybrid schedules, which incorporates a blend of in-person and virtual learning. Proponents of hybrid schedules say that they allow for students to have some in-person learning while opening more classroom space for social distancing.But the president is not a fan.“The concept of every other day seems a little ridiculous, right?” Trump said. “If you are going to do it, you do it. If you are not going to do it, the concept of going back even from a management standpoint from the school, every other day seems very strange.”Trump once again called on Congress to pass 5 billion in education funding, which House Democrats have also pushed for as part of a broader stimulus plan. While Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the White House is open to doing a piecemeal approach to a stimulus package, House Democrats have pushed for an all-encompassing bill.Some of the funding for schools could be used to help districts with additional costs associated with mitigating the risk of the virus.Trump said that the funds should follow the students. BALBOA PARK, Calif (KGTV) - A sign near Christmas nativity displays at Balboa Park is causing some stir. It says that religion is a myth and that heaven, hell, angels, devils and gods do not exist.The Freedom From Religion Foundation put up the sign earlier this month. It's one of several similar displays they placed around the country during the holiday season.A statement from the group says they put the displays together to, "celebrate free-thought and to ensure representation of the growing number of secular Americans."The FFRF says they went through the legal permitting process with the city to put the sign in place. Members say it's about freedom of speech and the separation of church and state, not a war on Christmas."If the city is going to allow space for free expression, it has to allow space for free expression for everyone," says Steve Trunk, an FFRF member in San Diego.In addition to the sign, the group put up a small "nativity" scene of their own. It features America's Founding Fathers and the Statue of Liberty looking down at a "baby" Bill of Rights. The group says it's part of their holiday celebration, honoring the day when the Bill of Rights was adopted, December 15, 1971."That's our holiday," says Trunk,But some people in the park say it's the wrong way to send a message of freedom."It's a little bit on the selfish side," says Diane Sherwood, a University Heights resident who walks through the park and enjoys seeing the Christmas decorations. "If they don't want to come here and see all these things, they certainly don't have to. Ashland University in Ohio is offering a new ,000 scholarship to talented Fortnite players."Fortnite Battle Royale" will be offered in fall 2018 as part of the university's esports program.The AU esports team will be the first known program in the country to add the game to its official offerings. Head Coach Josh Buchanan is excited to add the popular game to the college's gaming titles."Fortnite appeals to both the core and casual gaming audience," said Buchanan in a news release. "We're excited to provide this platform for gamers who want to showcase their skills in a more competitive space."The team at Ashland will arrange four-player teams that practice regularly and compete together.Scholarships will be awarded to players based on skill level and academic requirements.The university plans to conduct open tryouts for Fortnite players next school year. Ashland already offers League of Legends, Overwatch, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Rocket League in their esports program. The coach hopes eventually other schools will for programs to set up collegiate leagues for the team to compete against.  1184
