SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Virtual interviews and job fairs are among some of the biggest changes when searching for a new job during the COVID-19 era. And the millions of newly unemployed Americans are vying for fewer jobs.Christy Schmidt, a 34-year-old who lives in Bend, Oregon, has been scouring job boards ever since she was let go by her employer. "The amount of jobs up there or jobs that are very close to a fit for me are just non-existent, and I have come to realize that there are tons of other wonderful qualified people applying for the exact same jobs I am," said Schmidt.She was working as an executive assistant for three vice presidents at Navis, a company that specializes in technology for the hospitality industry. Some of their biggest clients include hotels and resorts."It was literally my dream job. It was the best company culture I had ever been a part of, just some of the most brilliant people that were just so down to earth. I loved going to work every single day," said Schmidt. Schmidt thought working from home would be temporary, just during COVID-19, until the day managers called an all-team meeting."And it was very tough for them to tell us we no longer had jobs, that they were doing everything they could to make the company survive," said Schmidt.After months of searching, she finally found an opportunity that made her hopeful, only to learn it was a scam. When it came time for the virtual interview, the scammer instead wanted to have a text conversation over Google Hangouts. "All they want is personal information; they did not want to know anything about my experience or background," said Schmidt. The FBI says hiring scams have spiked during the pandemic.Now, Schmidt is considering moving out of the small town of Bend to go back home to California, where there are more jobs available. "Maybe I need to relocate myself just to be able to survive right now," said Schmidt. Tim Best, CEO of Bradley-Morris RecruitMilitary, says Schmidt is far from alone. "This isn't going away, so it's not even about, well this is what I need to do now. No, this is a competency we all need to develop because this is here to stay at some level," said Best. The Army veteran has spent the last two decades helping military veterans and their spouses find careers through massive job fairs at venues like Yankee Stadium.Now, they're going virtual."Really, no one understands what a virtual career fair is until they experience it," said Best. Employers market their brand in virtual chat rooms, which can lead to a video interview on the spot.While some sectors, like hospitality and tourism, will likely be slow to come back, essential jobs like delivery drivers are in demand. As well as IT, tech, customer service, online teaching, and construction jobs."I've seen this before in previous recessions, where people do rethink their career paths," said Best. The San Diego Workforce Partnership is offering on-demand training videos online. They're also connecting job seekers with affordable certificate programs to help people learn new skills. Workforce development partners in other cities are offering similar resources. Schmidt is broadening her search, considering jobs she might have overlooked before the pandemic."Knock on every single door because I know eventually one is going to open, and it's going to be the right fit for you," said Schmidt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Business owners across San Diego County were bracing for the possibility of shifting back into the most restrictive purple tier Tuesday.The county barely avoided the move and can stay in the red tier for now.“The up and down is very difficult to run any business without having any known information about what the future brings,” said Scott Lutwak, CEO of Fit Athletic Club, which has five locations in the county. “It’s been just a rollercoaster of open and close again.”If the county had to move back into the purple tier, gyms and fitness centers would have to go back to outdoor operations only.“It’s not easy to just move all the equipment that you had inside and move it into your parking lot and create a gym,” he said.Under the red tier, they can operate inside at 10 percent capacity. Lutwak said that’s still just not enough.“This number has been a very difficult number for our industry to digest because we simply cannot operate at 10 percent of our capacity.”Restaurants were also set to move back outside if we hit the purple tier. Under the red, they can offer indoor dining at 25 percent capacity.“There’s no clear path to 100 percent, there’s no plan to get us back open, and that’s really shocking to us,” said Angie Weber, co-owner of Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop.She said her East Village business would not survive another shutdown.Weber said California’s color-coded tier system makes things more difficult for already struggling business owners, as they’re constantly worrying about what could happen next.“We need to fix this, we’re just going to be on this seesaw,” she said.While San Diego County teeters between the red and purple tiers with no orange or yellow in sight yet, both Lutwak and Weber hope county leaders and health officials can take back local control.“If we use the governor’s formula, our businesses are basically never going to be able to reopen,” said Lutwak. 1943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)  - A Marine was found dead Monday afternoon at the armory of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, according to military officials.The Marine had suffered a gunshot wound. No foul play is suspected, according to the U.S. Marine Corps.Military officials did not announce whether the incident was a suicide or accidental firing.The Marine’s identity has not been released. He or she was assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.The MCAS Miramar Provost Marshal Office and MCAS Miramar Fire Department responded to the scene and are investigating the death. 580

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Roger Francis, also known as Francis Love, died two years ago at the age of 70. He was a marine who served in the Vietnam War. When he died, his family discovered about 300 paintings from over the years and as of a few months ago his sister, Peggy Starns found a gallery to host an art show. "He goes what are you going to do with all these paintings and I said I don’t now we already gave a bunch to the church."For a period of his life, Love was homeless. "He was homeless for about 20 years and then he finally hooked up with VA and then he got some living expenses and was in the studio,” his sister tells 10News. After being homeless for two decades, he grew close with the community and continued to donate after he got his own apartment. Two years since his death, all proceeds from the art show on Friday will go to the Alpha Project to help San Diego’s homeless. 250 paintings will be for sale at Good Friday Gallery located downtown at 556 19th Street. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (CNS) - Seven "cool zones" are scheduled to open at noon Monday in San Diego County to provide relief from high temperatures.The cool zones are air-conditioned locations throughout the hottest areas of the county:-- Borrego Springs Library, 2580 Country Club Road;-- Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane;-- Lakeside Community Center, 9841 Vine St.;-- Potrero Branch Library, 24883 Potrero Valley Road;-- Santa Ysabel Nature Center, 22135 CA-79;-- Spring Valley Community Center, 8735 Jamacha Blvd.; and-- Valley Center Branch Library, 29200 Cole Grade Road.All sites will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.COVID-19 safety measures will be in place. Anyone entering a cool zone will have their temperature taken and all visitors and staff must wear face coverings and practice social distancing.The libraries are cooling sites only; no library services are being offered.Animals, except service animals, are not permitted in cooling zones."Although we need to take steps to keep seniors safe, it still remains important to also keep them cool," said Supervisor Dianne Jacob. "Cool zones provide a refuge during the hot summer months, so it's helpful the county has developed a plan to get them open."The cool zones program is offered in partnership with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency Aging & Independence Services and San Diego Gas & Electric Co. 1424
