SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new initiative in Pacific Beach could keep many businesses afloat but may make parking in the area even harder to find.Twenty-six parking spaces on Ocean Boulevard between Grand and Thomas avenues will be temporarily converted to outdoor dining for nearby businesses.Signs posted near the parking spaces show there will be no parking starting Friday, Aug. 21, until Dec. 30 for a special event.PB Shore Club owner Doug Sondomowicz worked with the city’s permits department, local police and fire departments, and the Coastal Commission for five weeks to get permits approved. The area where the parking spots used to be is now where cars and emergency vehicles can drive through along Ocean Boulevard.PB Shore Club will add 22 tables to the patio, bringing them to about 2/3 of their pre-COVID seating capacity.Sondomowicz said he thinks this will allow him to bring almost 100 percent of his employees back. The tables will be ready to go by lunchtime on Saturday."Originally, we laid off every employee we had here … hopefully with this we will get closer to that 100 percent employee mark,” said Sondomowicz. "During these trying times with COVID-19, the city has been gracious to let us use this and be able to keep us open and try to employ more people. And give locals and tourists still options to be able to eat outside beachfront."Waterbar will add around 20 tables and have their patio ready to go by 4 p.m. Friday. Some people in Pacific Beach say finding parking in the area is already difficult and this restriction will make it even harder.Pacific Beach resident Robert Gally opposes the idea, and he told ABC 10News, "A lot of times, I see police responding out here. I see fights. There's loud music. Knowing that they're going to be outside is just making it even worse. So, I'm very upset."PB resident Cindy Palus, who supports the idea, said, "I think it's advocating for people to get outside and walk, it's not a big deal and I think the businesses need it. San Diego needs it. I think it's great. I think we're supporting the economy."A spokesperson for San Diego City Councilwoman Jennifer Campbell’s office confirmed to ABC 10News that the space will be for outdoor dining. The spokesperson says the request was made and voted on by a group called Discover PB. She tells ABC 10News that the change was approved by the Coastal Commission.ABC 10News reached out to the group Discover PB, but have not heard back. 2460

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man caught on video peering into a Pacific Beach home has neighbors on edge. The woman, who did not want to be identified, said she was woken up by the sound of police officers knocking on her door in the area of Mission Blvd. and Emerald St. early Tuesday.Officers told her that her neighbor was alerted to an individual in the alley between their residences by his security camera. Police said a male was captured peering into her window and touching himself, the woman said.MAP: Track crime happening in San Diego CountyRequests to San Diego Police from 10News regarding this incident, details about the suspect, and any related reports were not returned Wednesday.Police reportedly told the woman they have received similar reports in the PB area.Earlier this month, James Hubbard was arrested for at least six instances of peeping and one count of petty theft in the Pacific Beach area between Sept. 11 and Oct. 12."Peeping Tom" events have also been reported in the Hillcrest area multiple times this year. 1055

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Point Loma grandmother put up Christmas lights to spread cheer during California's stay-home order. It started when Johnene Smith saw Italians singing in solidarity amid a lock down due to the Coronavirus pandemic. She then heard about people putting up Christmas lights to brighten neighbors spirits and something clicked."I'm like I can do that! I don't have to leave my house and people can walk by and see the heart and [spread] just a little joy," Smith said.So she put up a glowing heart in her living room window. "I went and found a piece of cardboard, made a heart and poked little holes and put the lights in it, so they could see my heart is out there for everyone." Smith hoped it would bring some much needed joy during the stay-at-home order which is keeping her from her seven grandchildren. "The youngest is going to be a year old in two weeks and we're not going to be able to go to her birthday party," She said sadly. She took this time to focus instead on what she can control, which is her happiness. Particularly, that means reminiscing about Christmastime, "it was really the last time we had joy before everything started was at Christmastime so why not bring back a little joy in a time where we can't control it."Her display went up Friday sparking her neighbors to light up their own homes.Neighbor Jojo Peters was thrilled at the idea. "When Johnene says let's do lights, I said okay! And I went and dug them out as fast as I could and threw them up!"Both want to spread love and calm.'I just want them to see the hope that's there, and that we're all there for each other,' she said.Smith hopes more San Diegans join in spreading cheer in this time of uncertainty. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A North San Diego County teenager was taken into custody Thursday after reportedly making threats to Torrey Pines High School.School administrators reached out to San Diego Police Thursday morning after a 14-year-old freshman was suspended for making verbal and written threats. While investigating, police found that the teen committed the crime of making criminal threats.Officers went to the 14-year-old boy's home around noon on Larkfield Court near El Camino Real and Del Mar Road in Carmel Valley. The boy was taken to the San Diego Juvenile Hall Detention Facility.RELATED: Parents warned of threats to 3 San Diego County schoolsThe teen's father cooperated with officers and the family's home is not being searched at this time, according to investigators.Later Thursday night, police went back to the home where they served a search warrant. Officers spent less than an hour searching the home. It's unclear what exactly, if anything, police found in the 14-year-old's possession. Following the incident, Superintendent Eric Dill released the following statement:"We are working cooperatively with the San Diego Police Department as they investigate a possible threat involving a student.
