SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Republican Assemblyman Randy Voepel is being called a valor thief, but his accusers have not produced hard evidence to back up their claims. Navy veteran and Republican state assembly candidate Larry Wilske addressed the media on Monday in front of downtown's USS Midway. He and others say the former mayor of Santee, Voepel, misrepresented his military service record. "This is serious business. It's a slap in the face to veterans," says Wilske. Wilske was joined by private investigator and retired Master Chief Petty Officer Terence Hoey, who has been looking into Voepel's military records.  "He's not a purple heart recipient, although he's repeatedly stated that he is and his chief of staff has doubled down on his claim," says Hoey. They're also alleging that Voepel falsely claimed he had combat experience in Vietnam. However, military discharge documents sent to us by Voepel's staff show that he served on the USS Buchanan and was awarded a ribbon for combat action, and was awarded other honors related to his service in Vietnam. The Wilske supporters believe the discharge documents have been forged. “This document has been altered, thus rendering the form essentially void,” says Hoey. Voepel’s staff denies that Voepel ever claimed to have been awarded a purple heart and 10News couldn’t find proof of the claim, anywhere. Additionally, a military service record provided by Hoey does not include a purple heart award in his list of decorations. Wilske and his supporters say there are multiple credible witness testimonies and video evidence that’ll reveal the whole truth, but they have yet to be fully produced. Wilske and Hoey deny that their allegations of stolen valor are tied to political mudslinging. “The one thing we can't square here is that round peg with Voepel and his wild and comedic claims,” adds Hoey. There was one alleged witness at Monday’s press conference. He said he’s a veteran who met Voepel at a recent political event and claims Voepel lied to his face about his service history. According to the site, San Diego is the 15th best place in the nation for veterans to live in 2019. Out of 100 other U.S. cities, San Diego ranks 47th for employment, 2nd for quality of life and 35th for health. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Fire-Rescue is bringing on more firefighters and preparing for a Red Flag Warning and Heat Advisory in the week ahead.Starting Monday Deputy Fire Chief David Gerboth said, "our helicopters will be on 24 hours a day. We're staffing up five additional brush engines. These are engines that are specially designed to work in these rural areas."He explained the engines have off-road capabilities and can fight fire in areas similar to Japatul Valley where the Valley Fire burned more than 9,000 acres in a day.The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for San Diego County mountains and valleys Monday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.A Heat Advisory follows, 10 a.m. Tuesday to 8 p.m. Thursday, "91 to 102 degrees for the San Diego valleys."This combination dire according to Gerboth."Near-record high temperatures, a mild Santa Ana event and combine that with our vegetation that burns is reaching critically dry levels. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Residents in Sherman Heights are worried about a new homeless storage facility expected to open up in their neighborhood. The facility would reportedly go up on the corner of 20th and Commerical streets. It would have up to 1,000 individual storage bins. People in Sherman Heights say they don't want the facility to be an eyesore and were never consulted by the city. The facility would be similar to one that already exists on 16th Street. That facility provides lockers and storage bins for approximately 400 people. The facility is city-funded but run by the non-profit organization Think Dignity. The city is hosting a community forum about the storage facility on Friday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Sherman Heights Community Center.  811

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police need help finding a man accused of burglarizing a boat and leaving behind a meth pipe and his own feces. The owner of the boat, Donnie Vachon, is still trying to pick up the pieces since it happened. He's out thousands of dollars due to damage and stolen property."Put it in perspective, it's just a boat, but it's our boat, it's our family's boat, it's my grand-babies boat," said Vachon.The theft happened in September and since then Vachon has heard of two more boat burglaries.He says the same off-brand soda can was left on both his boat and one of the others burglarized."It's kind of a heartbreaker, you wake up and go to work every day and here it sits," said Vachon, looking at the boat parked in the driveway.Detectives have not yet confirmed whether the burglaries are connected but are looking into it.If you have any information, contact Crime Stoppers.
